ALARM DEVICE.
Application mid October 7,
T all 1/: from. it 'HIUj/ concern Be it known that l, haurnl. M. ElHNl-ZR, a citizen of the l nited States. and a resident of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey. have invented certain new and useful lmprovemrnts in Alarm Devices. of which the following: is a specification.
This invention relates to an alarm device to prcveht the theft oi automobiles, and it is dcsrlillcd as being applied to automobiles, although it will be understood that it is adapted for other applications.
The invention consists of a device to be placed in the electrical circuits of an automobile, and having a switch mechanism for the ignition system and also having an alarm circuit the invention comprisim a device for locking or releasing the. switch arm at wiil and also actuating a, make-and-break device so that, according to the position of the lock, the ignition system is operative or the alarm circuit is made operative. When the. alarm circuit. is made, the ignition is broken, and neither the alarm circuit nor-the ignition circuit can. he changed from this status without the positive operation of the. lock. 3
The invention is illustrated in the accom pauying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a back view of the casing, with the back removed, showing the mechanism within the' switch box, and Fig. 2 is a section on line 2- in Fig. 1. Fig. 3'is a detail view showing a modified manner of wiring.
in the drawing 10 indicates, in general, the terminal of the ignition system, which is grounded and is usually the spark plug in the cylinder, the wires 11 and 12, connected by the switch 13, leading, to the switch box, and the second wire 14 leading to a source of electrical energy, such as a storage buttery l5,'which is also grounded, and when the circuit is closed, it makes ignition posihle, in the engine. i
The alarm circuit comprises a wire 16in circuit with an alarm device '17, this device being also grounded, usually to the body of the, vchit and the other wire. 18 being conne ted, in. be case. of'l ord or similar cars, ton dry battery 1!). In other instances where the dry batteries are not used, a wire 20 conl'lccts the terminals 27 and 29 and in this way the storage battery 15 is adapted to energize both circuits.
The casing 21. is suitably disposed, usually on the dashboard of the vehicle, and

contains a switch arm 22 which is adapted manner shown being: mounted on a pivot .23 and having; one end 14 seeured to a spring; 25. which has a tendency to pull the switch arm in one direction.
he wires 1'2 and H are connected to the. terminals 24') and 27. and the wires 16 and H are connected to the terminals 28 and 2f), the switch arm having. its end 30 arranged to cont-net with these terminals and connect them electrically. The end I'll of the switch arm is held against action by the spring 25 by means of a latch 32. which is normally held in position by a yielding means, such as a spring 33, and the latch 32 has a nose 34 which engages the under side of the end 31 of theswiteh arm to hold it up.
being grounded through the wire 44 50 as to complete the circuit. l
The switch 13 is usually a starting switch, that is, it is thrown on when a. driver is to. start his cur,und when the device is locked, as shown in Fig. 1, when the switch 1 3 is thrown on, the current can pass throu h'thc battery .15 into the ignition system in wanted at 10 and the machine is in eonditionto be started. If, however,
the operator has 1nlocked the device, so that the lock pieeeffi? is horizontal, the plate 38 break device has been contact 31, by means of the switch 13, the make-andforceda ainst the and if the circuit is t town on.
of the make-and break device is closed and the ma 'net 43 is 32 is pulled bac and the switc arm is operated by the springi25, which causes the end 30 of the switch arm to engage the terminals 28 and 29, which connects u is soundct and, continues to sound, even if the. switch 13 is open,
as the opening; of the switch 13 in no way afiectsthe operatlon of the switch arm 22, and the device will conthe alarm circuit andthe alarm no i tinue to sound until the lock piece 37 is turned. When the lock piece 37 is turned, the make-andJn-eak device 3 is opened and the lock piece acts as a setting device to re establish the switch arm in its normal position. where it is again engaged and held up by the latch 32. 7
It will be evident from this description that on the sounding of the alarm, the switch arm is disconnected from theicontacts that are part ofthe ignition circuit, and in the absence of a complete ignition circuit it would be impossible, while the alarm is sounding. to start the engine.
1 claim:
An alarm device comprisin r a switch mechanism including terminals i or two separate circuits, a movable switch member, a latch normally holding the switch member in position to contact with the terminals of one circuit, a magnet for releasing the latch to permit the switch to close the other circuit. a make and break device in the magnet circuit, and lockable means movable from a position in which it closes the magnet circuit at the make and break device and is out of the path of movement of said switch member to an alternative position in which the switch member is in latching position and the mngnet'circuit is open.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereto set my hand. this 29th day of September. 1919.
