Be it known that 1, PETER KRUMscHnm, a citizen of the United States, residing at itoxbury, county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates towriting machines for .use by the blind, and particularly to a tion by a novel construction and arrange-- ment of feed mechanism whereby the feed of the paper web is accomplished by and in the depression of the embossin key itself so that the machine successive y embosses and feeds at each depression of the key. This dispenses with the feed spring and release mechanism of the ordinary Braille machine, allows the key bars to be materially shortened, and in general enables the machine itself to be made in a much lighter and more compact form. The ordinary Braille machine is further complicated and increased in size by its arrangement for writing single and double base characters. Another object of the present invention is to provide in a simple andcompact form a machine which will write either single or double base, and in which the transition from one to the other may be quickly and easily made.
These and various other features which will appear more fully hereinafter are secured in the machine of the present invention, the construction and operation of which is disclosed invthe specification which follows. In the drawings accompanying this specification, a practical embodiment which has been found'satisfactory in use is shown. Throughout specification-and drawings like reference numerals are correspondingly applied, and in these drawings:

The paper web W is adapted to be intermittently advanced from a holding maga zine H to a receiving magazine R arranged T within the case at opposite ends thereof and to be successively pricked or embossed during such feed. Each magazine consists of a portion of the top casing wall and a disk 3 p1nned to one end of a revoluble spool 4 upon which the web W is mounted in coiled form. The spools 4 are journaled in bush.- lngs 5 sleeved about vertically disposed pins 6 fastened in the top and bottom walls of the case.
The spool of the receiving magazine R is adapted to be rotated at each depression of an embossing key, being provided with a feed ratchet 7 which is integrally formed upon a holder 13 set between the ratchet and the disk 3. Cooperating withv the ratchet 7 is a toothed pawl 8 which is connected w1th a key actuated part 60 of the machine and is normally urged into engagement with the ratchet teeth by a blade spring 9 mount-- ed within the casing. The pawl 8 cooperates with a fixed detent 1 O, the purpose of which is'to render said pawl inoperative for a tooth space by preventing contact between ratchet 7 and pawl 8 during the initial inward movement of the pawl upon actuation by part "60. A second detent 11 is also provided to prevent back feed of the ratchet 7.

The drum 17 is preferably a rubberfaced roll having a ratchet wheel 17 formed on one end thereof and with which cooperates a feed pawl 19 carried by the key-actuated part 60 of the machine whereby to'intermittently rotate said ratchet at each depression of a key. The pawl 19 is normally a blade spring 20 having two spring teet one of which engages said pawl 19 and the other of which engages for a similar purpose a second feed pawl 21 for a second feed ratchet 22 formed on the shaft 18 of the feed drum. Each pawl and ratchet mechanism has a detent 23 corresponding in function to the detent 10. A pawl 24 corresponding in function to the detent 11 of the pawl and ratchet mechanism 7- -8 engages the teeth of the ratchet 17 to prevent back feed of said ratchet. The
' pawls 19 and 21 are of different lengths to shift from one base to the other is made by means of a shifter '25 which as here shown consists of a plate pivotally mounted at 26 on a suitable bracket 26 fixed within the case and having a shift pin 27 cooperating with the pawl 19 and a shift pin 28 cooperating with the pawl 21. The plate 25 is further provided with a lockin notch 29 in which is disposed a locking pm 30 fixed in the case and adapted to lock the plate in one position. The plate is locked in its other position by friction. The plate 25 is shifted manually into either of its two effective positions to throw out of action either one or the other of the pawls 19 and 21, according to which base is to bewritten.
From the feed drum 17 the web passes to a guide roll 31 and from thence usually to the spool of the receiving magazine. The roll 31 is carried by a bracket 32 which is pivoted at 33 to the caseand has at the end a notch 34 in which the free end of a blade spring 35 is disposed to hold the bracket and -to wind it upon the spool of the receiving magazine, as where it is desirable to tear off the web and transcribe the notes thereon as the ly are made.
.he mechanism for pricking or embossing the web as it is fed consists of a series of key-actuated levers 37 arranged below the web and pivoted at their rear ends on a common pivot 38 set in a suitable holder 39 fastened to the inner face of the back walls 15 of the casing. Spring tension is maintained on said lever series by a multi-leaf spring 40 fastened to the inner face of the back wall 15 and having a series of blades (see Fig. 6) correspondin in number to the number of levers and eac downwardly upon a lever.
The levers 37 as here shown are six in number, of which three constitute a series for writing single base and-all six a series for writin double base. The levers are given the s ape best shown in Fig. 5 whereby to position the pins or punches 41 carried at their free ends in the parallel double row relation shown herein and which is the relation for writing the Braille system of characters.

The anvil 43 is itself adjustable transversely with relation to the direction of feed of the web through an elongated slot 44 therein in which fits a screw or other fastening 45 securing the bracket to the case. The anvil is held against lateral movement in. either direction by a pin 46 on the case fitting in a notch 47 at the lower edge of the anvil.
Between their ends, the levers 37 are formed each with a ratchet tooth 4 8 with which teeth engage a series of six'ratchets 49, all mounted on a common shaft 50 journaled vertically ofthe case in suitable bearings. Each ratchet is controlled by a toothed pawl 51 mounted on an oscillatable cam plate 52 pivoted at 53 in the case. The pawls 51 are normally urged into engagement with the ratchets by the fingers of a spring 54 corresponding in shape to the spring 40, and between'their ends each pawl is bent as shown leaving a detent spur 55 adapted to engage a throw-0d device'56.
Each cam plate 52 is cut-out at one edge, as indicated at 59, providing laterally ofiset portions 57 and 57 The inner ends of each of the six key levers 58 are connected to the portions 57 sothat one of the cam plates 52 will be oscillated in a counter clockwise direction upon a depression of the key of that lever 58 which is connected to said plate.

The of the :pins 60 connecting said plates 60 is received in the recess 59 of the cam plates and this pin receives the actuation from the shoulder portion 57' of the particular cam plate 52, which is oscillated and thereby oscillates the platesi60. -The plates 6O carry the pawls 8, 19 and 21and are pivoted for movement about a vertical axis on a common pivot pm 61, being normally urged into said recess'59 by a bladev spring 62 fastened to the case and having its free end engaging a pin 63 between said plates. The movement of the plates 60 in their direction of effective swing, which as shown here is clockwise, is stopped by a stop pin 64 suitably arranged with relation thereto.
The feed actuating plates 60 also have movement independently of the cam plates 52 through a pitman 65 operated by a spacer key 66. The pitman 65 has an elongated slot formed at its free end as indicated and in this slot a pin 67 connecting the plates 60 is disposed. The other end of the pit-- man is fastened at 69 to a bell-crank lever 70 mounted on a rock shaft 71 journaled in lever 58 is fastened at its outeriend to abellcrank 72 mounted on an individual rock shaft 73. The shafts 73 are telescopically I mounted within each other, the innermost shafts being journaled at their exposed ends in suitable bearings within the case.
Each shaft 73 is operated by an individual key 74 which is suitably connected thereto.
11 use, the machine may be conveniently carried and operated, if desired, in the pocket. When it is desired to write single base, the pawl and ratchet mechanism 17 -19 is set through the shifter plate 25 to regulate the feed of the web and only the three keys '74 at the right of the space key 66 are used. When it is desired to write double base, the shifter 25 is moved thereby,
to throw out the ratchet mechanism 1719 and to throw in the ratchet mechanism 2l22, and all six keys 7 4 are used. An actuation of any these keys, through its con nection with its cam plate 52 causes said plate to swing counter clockwise on its pivot, drawing the pawl 51 corresponding to the key struck, inwardly and rotating the ratchet 49 thereof clockwise one tooth space, thereby ca'using the particular lever of the lever series 37 actuated by said ratchet to swing upwardly and carrying its pin into the web W to emboss the paper. At the same time, the connected plates 60 are rocked in a clockwise direction on' their pivot '61 by the cam surface of the plate 52, drawing the pawl 19. or 21 according to which ratchet mechanism is setfor operation, inwardly, and rotating the feed drum counter clockwise one tooth space. The same movement of the plates 60 also draws the pawl 8 for the ratchet of the receiving spool inwardly, rotating that ratchet counter clockwise to wind the strip one tooth space? Should it happen that the strip was being fed out through the slot 36 in the casing, this movement of the receiving spool would, of course, be inefiective. J
It will be noted that by this construction the key series is materially shortened in length,- inasmuch as but slight leverage is necessary to operate the embossing levers and the feed mechanism. This permits the 'keys to be arranged within the edge of the 'case itself, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and pensing'with the strong feed spring and associated mechanism thereof, a considerable economy of space is effected, and the structure of the machine correspondingly simplified.
Various"modifications in the form and construction of this invention may obviously be resorted to, within the limits of the appended claims.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by,Letters Patent is:
1. In a typewriter, a strip, a strip embossing mechanism, a strip feeding and winding mechanism, a key, operative connections from said key to said strip embossing mechanism including i a member mounted for movement in one direction and effective in the initial depression of thekey to actuate the strip embossing mechanism, and operative connections from said key tosaid feeding and winding mechanism including a member mounted for movement in a direction oppositeto said first-named member and effective in the continued depression ofv the key to actuate .said strip feeding and winding mechanism.
2. In a typewriter, an impression strip, an impression mechanism including a plurality of impression levers having embossing elements, a ratchet for each lever, a pawl for each ratchet, and key operated means for actuating each of said pawls.
3. In a typewriter, an impression strip, an impression mechanism including a plurality of impression levers having embossing elements, a ratchet for each lever, a pawl for each ratchet, key-operated means for actuating each of said pawls, and a feed mech anism actuated by said means in theoperation thereof.
4. In a typewriter, an impression strip, an
impression device, an actuating mechanism therefor, including a key-operated oscillatable member, a feed mechanism, an a'ctu ating mechanism therefor including a member oscillated by said first-named member in the operation thereof, means for actuating said oscillatable feed member independently of said impression device actuating member, and means for selectively varying the feeding relation of said feed mechanism.
5. In a typewriter, an impression strip, an impression device, an actuatingmechanism therefor including a key-operated oscillatable member, a feed mechanism including two sets of pawl and ratchet devices adapted to be selectively moved into feeding relation, an actuating mechanism for said feed mechanism including a member oscillated by said first-named member in the operation thereof, and a shifter for selectively moving a set of said pawl and ratchet devices into feeding relation to said feed mechanism.
6. In a typewriter, an impression strip, an impression mechanism, key-operated means for actuating said mechanism including a member mounted for actuating movement in one direction, a feed mechanism for said strip, and an operating mechanism for said feed mechanism including a member mountedfor actuating movement in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of said first-named member and actuated by said member.

9. In a Braille typewriter adapted to write both single and double base, selectlvely, a strip, a. strip embossing mechanism,
a strip feeding'and winding mechanism including two independently effective devices adapted to be selectively connected in feeding relation to the strip, means for selectively movin one or the other of said devices into said relation, and ke operated means for actuating said embossing mechanism and said feeding and winding mechanism. y g Y 10. In a typewriter, an impression strip, a feed drum, a shaft therefor, a ratchet on said drum and a ratchet on said shaft, pawls for each ratchet, means for selectively coupling one pawl and one ratchet of a pair to feed said strip, and means for operating said selected pawl.
11. In a typewriter, an impression strip, a feed drum, a shaft therefor, a ratchet on said drum and a ratchet on said shaft, pawls of different lengths for each ratchet, a manually shiftable device having two pins disposed each forengagement with a pawl for selectively coupling one pawl and one ratchet to feed said strip, and kev-actuated means for operating sald selected pawl.
12. In a typewriter, a perforation strip,
a perforating mechanism, a key, an osci latable member operated by said key and operating said perforating mechanism, a strip feeding and winding mechanism, and an oscillatable member operated by said first-named member during the continued downward depression of the key and operating said feeding and winding mechamsm.
13. In a typewriter, a casin a perforation strip, strip feeding and wlnding mechanism and strip perforating mechanism located within the casing, an oscillatable member, a member oscillated thereby, operative positive connections from said member to said feeding and winding mechanism and to said perforation mechanism, respectively, a plurality of telescopically mounted rock shafts located within the casing and operatively connected with said oscillatable member, and a key for each shaft.
14. In a typewriter, a strip, winding and feeding mechanism for said strip,v a plurality of strip embossing elements, and a mount for a plurality of dies and adjustable relative to said strip, said dies individually adjustable in said mount and consisting of screws having sockets adapted to receive said embossing elements.
15. In a typewriter, a strip, strip windmg and feeding mechanism, a plurality of.
strip embossing elements, a die mount adj ustable transverse to the direction of travel of said strip, and a plurality of individual adjustable dies carried by said mount and having sockets to receive said embossing elements.
16. In a writing machine an impression strip, strip embossingmechanism, an actuator for said strip embossingmechanism, strip feeding mechanism, an actuator for said strip feeding mechanism operated by and in the movement of said actuator for the strip embossing mechanism, and a key directly connected to said actuator for the strip embossing mechanism to actuate said embossing mechanism and effective through said actuator to operate the actuator for the stri feeding mechanism.
