TIME-CONTROLLED SWITCH.
Be it knownthat I, JAcoB' RUBIN, a citizen of-Poland, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in 1 Time-Controlled Switches, of which the following is a specification.
-'.lhe'purpose of the invention is to provide a time operated mechanism in conjunction with an electric circuit closing and circuit opening device whereby electric lights I and electrically operated apparatuses may he put in operation for acertain length of time and cut oil of operation for a certain length of time solely by mechanical means. To this end, the invention comprises an appripriate electrical switch and a pair of arms, the one "closing and the other opening the switch. 'These; arms are foperated by appropriate wheels driven by suitable timing mechanism. The wheels are provided with detachable pins each engageable with its respectivearm and these" pins may be set at anydesired pointson their-particular wheel, thus making it possibleto have the device close' the switchzfor a certain length of'time, then open it" for a certain length of time and then close it and soon.
Further purpose of the'invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction. durable and effective 'infoperation and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other andfurther, objects appear in the following description wherein the invention is set'forth'in detail.
To the exact construction'inwhich it is shown and descr1bed,fthe invention 18 not to be restricted. The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice 'maysuggest, in so far as such changes or alterations are (:ompatiblein spirit with the annexed claim.

As shown, the invention comprises a casing having-the front and rear walls 1 and 2 behind which are positioned the open plates 8 and l, the latter comprising appropriate frame work for the support of clock movements 5 and 6. Each movement is driven by an appropriate spring of usual character for such movements and this spring is carried on a suitable winding arbor connected by an appropriate gear train to the minute spindle, the minute spindle 7 of the move: ment 6 extending laterally from the plate dand-the minute spindle 8 of the movement 5 similarly extending from the plate 3. The minute spindle? carries a gear 9'forming the final unit of its attendant gear train and fixedly attached. togthis gear there is a pinion 10,- the lattergmeshing with a gear wheel 11. The gear ratio of the gear 11 and pinion 10 ist-wenty-four to one, so that for every revolution of the minute spindle 7 there will be a twenty-fourth of a revolution for the gear 11. V The minute spindle 8 carries a gear 12 as the terminal unit of its particular gear train and mounted with this gear '12 there is a pinion 13 meshing with a gear 14:, the V ratio of the. gear '14 to the pinion13 being the same as the ratio of the gear 11 to the ported in appropriate bearings formed in the plates 4 and 3. The purpose and functions of these gears 14 and 11 appear hereinafter.
Provision is made for winding both movepinion 12-, and its ments 5' and 6 simulta neouslyand since these movements run in opposite directions for a purpose hereinafter appearing, it is necessary that thewinding arbors of the two movements be turned in opposite directions.
To this end there is mounted in appropriate bearings formed in the plates 4: and 3 a main staff or shaft 16, one end of this shaft protrudingthrough the front wall or face 1 where it receives a windingkey 1?. Be-
tween the front wall and the plate 3, the shaft- 16 carries a rear 18 and this meshes with av gear 19 carried by the main shaft or winding; arbor 20 of the movement 6. It will thus be observed that as the shaft 16 is turned in one direction, the arbor 20 will be turned in the opposite direction.
Between the back wall 2 and the adjacent plate 4, the shaft 16 carries a gear 21 and, this meshes with an idle gear 22 carried loosely on an appropriate stud 23 set in the plate 4:, this idle gear 22 meshing in turn with a gear 24: carried by the winding arbor 25 of the movement 5. Obviously the turning of the shaft 16 will result in the turning of the arbor 25 in the same direction.
Mounted on the upper edges of the plates l and 3 there is a horizontally disposed plate 26 and this plate supports a suitable insulating switch base 27. the latter carrying an electric switch 28 to whose terminals are brought the conducting w'es 29 and 30. which connectrespectively to source of electrical supply and to the electrical device to be controlled by the apparatus. The movable elementof the switch 28 is provided with an insulating foot 31 at its free terminal and this foot is adapted to be engaged either on the upper face or lower face by the spring arms 32 and 33 respectivey.
' the latter projecting laterally from rock shafts and 35 which are provided with counter-balancing weights 36 and 37, whose function is to keep the arms normally out of contact with the foot 31. The rock shafts and 35 are swingingly mounted in appropriate bearings formed in the front walls 1 and 2 and the latter is provided with an arm 38 positioned just back of the front wall 1 by hanging; in front of the gear 1ft, while the former is provided with an arm 39 normally hanging in front of the gear 11 in looking at the device from the back. These arms stand just inside the rear wall 2.
Each of the gears 11 and 1a is formed with holes 40 spaced at uniform angular distance apart, the number of these holes equaling the number of hours to the day and each hole being threaded so that a pin e1 may be placed in any one desired. each hole. being designated by suitable indicia to indicate a certain hour of the day.
llhen the device is in operation, the two gears 11 and let are driven in opposite direc tions at the rate of th of a revolution per hour. The pin 41 in the gear 14 is attached in the hole 40 designating the hour which it is desired to open the switch 29. As the gear wheel 1% is advanced, this pin eventually engages the arm 38 to rock the shaft 35 upwardly and to thus bring the arm 33 into contact with the underface of the foot 31 with the resultant raising of movable element of the switch and the separation of the circuit closing contacts. The movable element of the switch does not swing freely but is frictionally engaged with its hinge posts for retaining any position to which it may be moved. Therefore, the raising operation effected by the arm 33 results in the opening of the switch.
The closing operation is effected by the gear 11 whose pin l1 is attached in the hole 40 bearing the hour designation at which it is desired to close the switch. This gear 11 turns in the opposite direction from the gear 14- and when its pin 4i]. engages the arm 39 the shaft 8% is rocked to move the arm 32 downwardly, the latter engaging the foot 31 on the upper face and forcing the movable element of the switch down to bring into electrical connection the two switch contacts with the resultant closing of the circuit which the switch controls.
On the outer facing of the walls 1 and 2 appropriate dials 42 are provided bearing indicia inc icating the ia-hours and over these dials there are movable the hands 43 which are attached to the gears 11 and 14 respectively, the dials being formed with appropriate center openings through which the hands may reach the dials for move ment thereovcr.
In Fig. 7 there is shown a modified form of switch of the double pole variety. This switch is adapted to be used in place of the switch shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and it comprises an insulating base 50 upstanding from the top face of which there are the cars Between these cars 53 there is pivotally mounted the movable element of the switch and this element is provided with the foot 52 engageable above and below by the two arms mounted on the rock shafts. The movable element is bifurcated as shown and carries at the ends of its legs the contact members 55 which are brought into contact with or moves away from the contact members 5'12, as the movable element of the switch is rocked on its pivot by the operation of the aforesaid arms. The usual conducting wires lead from the contact points 5% and 55 respectively, and connect with a suitable source of electrical supply and with the mechanism or like to be controlled.
From the foregoing desc 'iption and the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear enough understanding of the invention is to be had to render further description unnecessary.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
