rhnother object of the invention is to reduce the number of parts by using a single cable of comparatively short length, thus reducing the number of pulleys used and requiring aless number of men to operate 1 the device.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 2-- Figure 1 is an elevation of the device.

In these views 1 indicates the base of the apparatus, said base being composed of the circular part 2 and the diametrically arranged arms 3. acts to prevent rotation on the drum in one direction. By pressing upon the upper end of the dog it may be moved out of engagement with the rack teeth so that the drum may be rotated in either direction.
Three shafts 11, 12 and 13 are rotatably mounted in the base and top plate and pass through the drum. The shafts 11 and 13 have their upper ends projecting from the top plate and these projecting ends are square in cross section. The lower end of shaft 13 passes through the base and rests in a boss 14. formed on the under face of said base. By this means the said shaft 13 may have longitudinal movement with- V out its lower end leaving its bearing in the base. Shoulders 15 are formed on the shafts to prevent longitudinal movement thereof, the shoulder on the shaft 13 being spaced from the top plate to permit limited longitudinal movement. The shaft 11 carries a gear 16 at its lower part which meshes with v a gear 17 on the shaft 12. This shaft 12 carries larger gear 18 which meshes with a gear 19 on the shaft 13. This shaft 13 also carries a gear 20 which is adapted to mesh with the ring gear 21 formed on the inwardly extending ring 22 carried by the drum. When the shaft 13 is raised the gear 20 will be out of mesh with said gear 21.
The sweep 23 is connected to a casting 24 which is provided with a boss 25, a square hole 26 being provided in said boss. Disks 27 are eocentrically mounted on pins 28 projecting from the sides of the casting and a U-shaped handle member 29 has its ends engaging eyes 30 on said disks.
The drum is preferably provided with a grooved outer periphery and carries an eye 31 to which the cable is attached.
lVhen the maximum power is required the casting is placed on shaft 11. with the square end of said shaft engaging the square hole 26. When the sweep is actuated the shafts and gears will turn the drum at slow speed and with the maximum pulling power. To secure faster speed but less power the casting is placed on shaft 13. To move the casting from one shaft to the other the member 29 is manually operated to turn the disk on the pins so as to force the casting upwardly off the shaft by the disk engaging the upper face of the top plate. The casting and sweep is then slid over the top plate to a position over the other saaft and then the member 29 is manipulated to swing the disk upwardly on the pivots and permit the casting to lower upon the end of the shaft. When it is desired to release the drum from the shafts the casting is secured to shaft 13 by running a pin through the hole 32 in the upper end of said shaft and through the hole in the socketed boss of said casting. In this way when the casting is raised by the eccentric disks the shaft will be raised with it and thus the gear 20 will be moved out of mesh with the gear 21 so that the drum may run free of the shafts.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
WVhat I claim is l. A stump puller comprising a supporting frame having bosses thereon, an endless drum rotatably supported by the frame and having its ends engaging said bosses, a plurality of shafts journaled in the frame and passlng through the drum, intermeshing gears on the shafts, a ring gear on the drum engaged by one of said gears, a sweep and means for connecting said sweep with a number of said shafts to rotate thedrum at different speeds.
2. A stump puller comprising a frame including a base and a top plate, bosses on said base and top plate, a drum having its ends engaging said bosses, ratchet mechanism for preventing rearward rotation of said drum, a plurality of shafts journaled in the frame and passing through said drum, intermeshing gears on said shafts, a ring gear on the drum engaged by one of said gears, some of said shafts having their ends projecting above the top plate, a sweep and means for detachably connecting said sweep with the projecting ends of said shafts.
3. A stump puller of the class described comprising a frame including a base and top plate, said base and top plate having bosses thereon, a drum at its ends engaging said bosses ratchet mechanism for preventing rearward movement of the drum, a plurality of shafts journaled in the frame and passing through the drum, some of said shafts having their ends projecting above the top plate, intermeshing gears carried by the shafts, a ring gear on the drum engaged by one of said gears, a sweep, means for detachably connecting said sweep with the projecting ends of the shafts and means associated with the above mentioned means for moving one of said shafts longitudinally to disengage its gear from the ring gear on the drum.
