Description

UNITED STATES JACOB GROSS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of vLetters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
Application filed April 23, 1920. Serial No. 375,982.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB Gnoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelhia, in the county of Philadelphia and btate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to pro-vide an improved illuminated advertising device, a part of which preferably comprises any well-known construction of chronometer.
A further object is to provide such a device with means for associating therewith, and as a unitary part thereof, a plurality of replaceable plates preferably of transparent or semi-transparent material, and adapted to embody thereon any desired indicia comprising advertising matter, information for the public, or other composition as may be preferred.
And a further object is to provide a construction of the device which is adapted in various sizes and types of finish to be placed upon the outside of a building for instance and subjected to the average weather conditions, or to be hung upon the walls of a theater, auditorium, or other interior location where the device is obviously more protected.
Further details of the construction and operation of the preferred.l embodiment of this invention are fully brought out in the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form which the invention may assume; Fig. 2 is a horizontal transverse diametrical section through the device as illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view partially in section and showing the method of inserting and replacing the cards bearing advertising matter.
Referring to the drawings, one embodiment of the invention is shown as comprising an illuminated advertising device in a circular form, but it is to be understood that the invention-is equally applicable to devices of any shape whatsoever, so long as they comprise the essential elements of the invention.
A base or back-wall 1 is shown as having secured to the periphery thereof a hollow whatsoever, such as that commonly known as any movement, an electrically-operated mechanism, or the like. There is also positioned within the said shell one or more sources of light, such for instance as the incandescent electric bulbs 4, shown as being supported by brackets 5 secured directly to the wall 1.
The forward edge portion of the shell 2 is provided with spaced yet alined and peripherally extending Slots 6, separated by partitio-ns 7, and having an' enlarged central offset 8 for a purpose hereinafter described. The free edge portion of said shell beyond said slots is furthermore provided with an L-shaped annular angle-iron 9, in which is secured a transparent disk 10 of glass or other suitable material, and through the center of which extends a` pin 11 carrying an arm 12 pro-vided at its radially outer end with a hand or other pointer 13, revoluble clockwise by the clockwork mechanism 3 about the face of the device and preferably in accordance with the movement of an ordinary second-hand, which generally passes through one complete revolution during a period of one minute.
Immediately adjacent to the rear face of the transparent disk 10 and concentric therewith is secured a suitable annular frame 14, which positions a clock-face 15, and through the center of which extends the revoluble mounting 16 for the minuteand hour-hands 17 and 18, respectively.
Between the frame 14 and the inner portions of the angle-iron 9 extend radially what might be called T-irons 19, which pro-- vide oppositely disposed angular recesses adapted to removably support suitable segmental cards or plates 20 of transparent or semi-transparent material in alinement with the slots 6 in the shell 2, and said plates being adapted to carry any desired form of advertising matter. Q
As will be obvious from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, all that is necessary in order to replace one of the ad-carrying plates is to extend a thumb or finger through one of the offsets 8 until the plate adjacent thereto can be slid radially outwardly through the connecting slot 6, after which another plate can be substituted for theone removed. When all of the plates are in position, and it is to be understood that the exact number is not essential to the invention, light from the bulbs 4 or any other rsccpe of the appended claims.
aving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In an advertising device, the combina tionvof a shell having a Wall provided with elongated slots, a clock-dial partially clos- Ling one side of said shell, means extending between said wall and said dial adapted to support' transparent indicia-carrying plates removable through said slots, and together uniting to close the remainder of said side, and a source of light within said shell to shine through said plates.
2. In an advertising device, the combination of a shell having a wall provided with elongated slots, a clock-dial partially closing one side of said shell, angle bars extending between said dial and the said wall between the adjacent ends of said slots, and adapted to removably support plates carrying advertising indicia within the angles of said bars, and means to throw light through said plates.
3. In an advertising device, the combination of a shell having a wall provided with elongated slots, a clock-dial partially closing one side of said shell, angle bars extending between said dial and the said wall between the adjacent ends of said slots, and
adapted to removably support plates carryl,
ing advertising indicia, each of said slots being provided with an enlarged portion adapted to permit the insertion of a finger to Vfacilitate the removal of said plates, and a source of light within said shell to project light through said plates.
4. In an advertising device, the combination of a shell, a transparent closure for one side thereof, a circular peripheral angle bar to secure said closure to the walls of said shell, a transparent clock-dial adjacent to the rear face Jf said closure, a clock mechanism within said shell, hands actuated by said mechanism to move across said dial, a plurality of slots in one side of said shell immediately adjacent to the said closure, angle bars connecting said dial to thefwalls of said shell between adjacent ends of said slots and adapted to removably support plates inserted through said slots, and-means within said shell to throw light' outwardly through said plates.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature.
JACOB GROSS.
