Description

I 0.1 STEVENS, SPRING RELEASING DEVICE FOR AUTO VALVE SPRINGS.
,APPLICATION FILE-D FEB. '4, 1920.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
I INVENTOR 61E ,5 terens ATTORNEYS:
UNITED srrss CHARLES E. STEVENS, OF FLAT ROCK, ILLINOIS.
SPRING-RELEASIN 'G DEVICE FOR AUTO VALVE-SPRINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
Application filed February 4, 1920. Serial No. 356,328.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES STEVENS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Flat Rock, in the county of Crawford and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Releasing Devices for Auto Valve-Springs, of which the following is a specification. p
This inventlon relates to devices for facilitating the removal of valve springs, it
being designed more particularly for remov ing the spring from the valve assembly used in Buick motor cars, although it is not limited thereto, but may be used with equal facility in connection with other and similar types of valve assemblies.
The invention has for its object to provide a very simple and efficient device for compressing the valve spring so that the cotter pin or cross key which engages one end of the spring may be readily removed, and with this object in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof. 7
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a base plate having at one end an upstanding portion 6 forming a standard for supporting certain parts to be presently described, and having at its other end a downturned flange 7 provided with perforations 8 adapted to receive fasteners for attachment of the device to a work bench or other suitable support.
On the face of the part 6 is slidably mounted a plate 9 having at its lower end two outstanding, laterally spaced fingers 10. The plate 9 has a longitudinal slot 11 through which passes a pivot bolt 12 secured to the part 6. Adjacent to the lower end of the slot 11 is an outstanding lug 13, and from the part 6 project lugs 14: between which the plate 9 seats and by which it is guided.
In front of the plate 9 is located a cam '15 which 1s fulcrumed at the bolt 12 and has a lever handle 16. The-edge of the cam is adapted to engage the abutment on the plate 9 formed by the lug 13, and hence when the handle 16 is. swung downwardly,
the cam turns and forces the plate downwardly.
In use, the cage 17 of the valve assembly is placed on the base plate 5, and the plate 9 is lowered: so that the valve stem 18 seats between the fingers 10, and the latter bear on the top of the valve spring 19. The cam 15 is now operated to force the plate 9 downwardly, and as the fingers 10 engage the 7,
spring, the latter is compressed and forced away from the spring retaining cross pin 20 in the stem 18, so that said pin may now be readily removed from the stem. The device can be operated with one hand, leaving the other hand of the operator free to grasp the pin to effect its removal.
The device is rapid in operation and easily handled, and it efi'ectually serves the purpose for which it is designed.
I claim:
1. A spring compressing device comprising a base for supporting the spring as sembly, a standard rising from the base, a longitudinally slotted member slidably supported on the standard and movable toward and from the base, an abutment on saidand a pivot for said lever carried by the standard and passing through the slot of the aforesaid member.
In testimony whereof I affix my si nature.
CHARLES F. srn nus.
