IMPROVEMENT IN APPARAT US FOR SHEARING HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,993, dated March 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern 4 Be it known that I, WILLIAM HARRISON, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Clipping Horses, of which the `following is a specication:
This invention relates to a shearing mechanism for clipping or shearing horses; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification, Figure l is a top or plan view of the machine in full. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the shearing-plates and supplemental plate, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the supplemental plate.
Like letters of reference made use of in the used.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making use in so doing of the aforesaid drawing by letters of reference thereto.
In the said drawing, A represents the stationary shearing-plate, to which is rigidly and ixnmovably fixed the shorter handle B. C is the movable shearing-plate, resting upon and secured to the plate A by means of the bolts b, which pass through slots d in plate O. D is the other handle pivoted to the plate A at e, and pivoted to the plate O at f, in a verticalV slot, so that when said handle is operated, the plate O moves with a rectilinear motion upon the plate A. Both plates A and C are toothed upon their outer edges at E, with teeth provided with lateral-shear cutting-edges, which pass each other reeiprocally in the working oi' the machine, and shear the hair of the horse brought in contact with them by moving the machine over the coat from place to place. The plate A is provided at each end with a lug, G, or equivalent contrivance, for securing a supplemental plate, H, of the same shape in place oi' the plate A; several ot' these additional plates are provided for each machine,- and are of varying thicknesses. These supplemental plates are to be placed below the plate A, and serve to regulate the height of the shearing-edge in cutting, by which means -the hair upon the horse may be trimmed or clipped long or short in accordance with the season or weather. Said supplemental plate or plates are secured by bolts g through the lugs G.
Having thus fully described the construction and operationpf my invention, what I deem new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the movable plate O, the stationary plate A provided with lugs G, and the supplemental plate or plates H, and bolts g, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
i WILLIAM HARRISON.
