To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that-I, GEORGE BROWNING, a subject of the King of England, residing at vGrand Rapids, in the county ofK nt and Sftate of Michigan, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Razors, of which the following is a description.

The head 2 is preferably of suitable length to provide a backing for the bladeholder mounted thereon and is also preferably provided with a guard for the cutting edge comprising a plurality of lingers 3 each preferably projecting into the cutting plane of the blade and extending laterally beyond the cutting edge 4 in position to lprevent accidental injury from the edge of the blade.l Any convenient means may be provided for mounting the blade 4 in suitable position upon longitudinally moving the same when my lmproved razor is in service. As shown a blade-holder 5 is mounted upon the head 2 comprising a base 6 having a pairof laterally extending lugs or buttons 7v one at each end of the base each rigidly attachedthere-` to and each extending through a slot 8 in the head 2. The walls of the 'slots 8 are the head 2 and the buttons 7v are provided with suitably enlarged heads adapted to en gage the underside of the' head 2 to retain the part 6 in posltion upon the head, yet per'- mit of its free longitudinal movement thereon.

A cap 10' is l of the part 6 as at 18 with suitable openings therein to receive the -studsl 9 and clamp the blade in position upon the part 6. Suitablemeans are also provided to lock the cap 10 to the part 6 at itsfree end.- As shown a resilient tongue or latch 11 is formed upon the'cap at its free end adapted to engage vthe end of the part 6 and resiliently maintain the parts in position. Any convenient means may be provided for imparting a longitudinally reciprocating motion to` the blade-holder 5. In the preferred construction an arm 12 is provided at each end of the head 2 projecting beyond the blade-holder 5 line with the handle4 1 but substantially in at the opposite side of the head and a roller 14 is rotatably mounted between the arms 12 and arranged to freely rotate on suitable bearings lformed in said arms. Having thus described my improvement it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form or construc-v tionshown. l

What I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A safety razor of the class described comprising a guard plate having a handle extending therefrom and provided with slots, a blade-holding unit slidably mounted fluted or roughin the cutting op-` upon said plate,the blade-holding unit including a blade and a blade holder, said holder having guides engaging the lower surface of the plate, portions of said guides extendingthrou h the slots in the plate, means on the ho der vengaging the blade to hold it in position, said holder having a clamping bar extending over and engaging the outer-surface of the blade and portlons of the holder to clamp the blade securely with reference to the holder and means for reciprocating the blade-holding unit.

2. In a razor of the kind described and in combination, a fiat head plate having a handle .extending therefrom, a blade adapted to have reciprocatory sliding movement along the head plate, means detachably secured to the head plate for maintaining the blade upon the head plate while permitting the same to reciprocate relatively to the head plate, a rotatable roller on the head plate located to one side thereof adjacent the rear edge of the blade, and a reciprocating drive connection for the blade with the roller.
