Description
J. McLAUGHLIN.
Clothes Wringer.
Patented ()ct.- 16. 1855.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JNO. MCLAUGHLIN, OF STEUBENVILLE, OHIO.
WRINGER FOR CLOTHES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,684, dated October 16, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MOLAUGHLIN, of Steubenville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio have invented a new and useful Apparatus for \Vringing Clothes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an edge elevation; showing the apparatus in operation. Fig. 2 is a face elevation.
Similar letters of reference denote the same part of the wringer.
The nature of my invention consists in combining with a hollow rotary drum through which one extremity of the clothing passes, two ratchet levers acting as will be described to secure the clothing and operate the apparatus.
In the drawing A is a standard supporting the wringer, to be attached to a washing machine, tub or bench as may be desired.
B is a drum, slotted on one side to permit the movement of the lever C, and attached to the standard A by the three supports a, which allow it a rotary motion. Upon the inner face of the drum B and embraced by the supports a a, is the ratchet b, holding the drum fixed by means of pawl C. Attached to the drum is the small standard D to which is connected by pin (Z, the ratchet lever E. The lever C is movable about the pin 6, and has upon one edge the teeth 7, opposite the serrated interior of the drum, so that as the lever C is drawn toward the teeth 71., the clothes will be tightly grasped and held within the drum, the teeth Z of ratchet lever E holding the said grasping lever in position through pin 2'.
In operation the clothing is passed over a hook as shown at H in Fig. 1, and confined in the drum as described. The drum is then revolved in direction of arrow, by lever C. When finished, lever E is raised and the clothes released, by the removal of the pressure of the lever C.
I claim-- The serrated rotary drum in combination with the ratchet levers C and E, constructed arranged and operating as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed by name before two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN McLAUGI-ILIN. \Vitnesses Gno. PATTEN, JAS. D. CLARY.
