To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, CHARLES F. S'roDnAnn', a ci en of the United States, and a resident or York, county and State of New York, have invented an improvement in Pi-nforated Music-Sheets, of which the follovvinpY description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing lili-e parts.

This invention relates to perforated music sheets for automatic musical instruments such layer-pianos. Amongother objects the invention is intended to provide visible means to distinguish different perforations so as to indicate the different degrees of intensity with which the notes thereof are intended to be played.

The invention may be readilyT understood by reference to onepracticable embodiment thereof shown for illustration in the accompanying drawingwhich represents a frag; ment of a perforated music sheet.

Referring to the drawing, the note perforations there shown are arranged for convenient description in two groups, an ac sompaniment group to the left, and a theme group to the right. It is preferred that each tone be sounded and held through desired duration, by` a series of small perf0rations (such as the series l) which are placed so close together, appropriately to the size of the tracker vent to be opened thereby, as to produce the effect of a single long perforation. The advantages of strength and durability of the music sheet arising from such use of small perforations in series, instead of continuous longV perforations, are well known to those skilled in the art.

ln the illustrative example, each series o perforations for a note is given a distinctive appearance, by which, for instance, a theme note and an accompaniment note may be distinguished; or onetheme note may be distinguished from another intended to be played with a. different intensity.

To exemplify means for this purpose, the accompanying drawing shows the series 1 of perforations provided With'an accompanilnent-distinguishing perforation 2 Which may be conveniently of greater length than the other perforations 3-3 of the same group. Similar accompanimentdistinguishing perforations 1 -4, 55, are shown as associated with the several accompaniment series.

The series of periorations for the theme illustrated, are provided with i guishing perforations 6-6-(5, S. The theme-distinguishing i preferably substantially difierent in appearance from the accompanr nien istingguishing perforations, so that the person utilizing` the sheet may readily observe which ser'es of perforations pertain to the accompaniment and which to the theme. it will be noted, also, that the themedistinguishing erforations 6G 6 are conspicuously short-er than the themedistinguishing perforations -7-7g and that the latter are likewise conspicuously shorter than the theme perforation S. Thus, diifcrent lengths of the perforations 6, 7 and S, may be arranged to indicate different degrees of intensity intended for their corresponding notes. For instance, the short perfo 1ations 6 may indicate piano; the longer perforation 7 may indicate mezzo-forte; and the still longer perforation 5B may indicate forte.

From the foregoing illustrative example,

it will be apparent to those skilled in the art, that the described arrangement for diei tinguishing;` pcrforations may be utilized to characterise a music sheet in such a Way that the user may be kept informed of the intended intensities and relative intensities of tones, orf of other characteristics desired to be given to the respective tones. f l't is to be understood that the specific embodiment of `the invention described above and shown in the drawings, is disclosed merely for purposes of illustration and that the scope of the invention is not iimited to the precise details of construction and arrangement shown. Gn the contrary, the invention maybe variously embodied within the scope of the sub-joined claims.

Claims:

l. A music sheet comprising, in conibination, perforations for playingaccompaniment tones and theme tones, having dif ferent appearances to distinguish visibly between acconnpaniment playing` perforations and theme playing perforations, and certain of the theme playing perforations having appearances different from each other to distinguish visibly between perforations for theme tones to be played with one intensity and perforations for theme tones to be played with another intensity.
