Description

T. GLOVER. CONSTRUCTION OF GOIN FREED MECHANISM.
APPLICATION FILED OCT- Z4J'l9l9.
Patented Feb. 1,1921.
UNITED STATES THOMAS GLOVER, or EDMONTON, 1.0mm, ENGLAND.
CONSTRUCTION OF GOIN-FREED MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 24, 1919. Serial No. 332,972.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GLovnR, a sub ject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Edmonton, London, England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in the Construction of Coin-Freed Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of coin freed mechanism in which the coin engages a carrier and the teeth of a wheel whereby on the movement of the carrier the wheel is revolved on itsaxle the required distance to actuate the mechanism, such as is described and illustrated in the specification and drawings of British Patent No. 125222 of 1894,
but my invention may be employed with other constructions employing a toothed wheel to operate the mechanism and for pur poses other than vending fluids.
The object of my invention is to lock the toothed wheel while the coin slot is open thereby preventing any fraudulent manipulation oi the mechanism by wires or tools inserted in the coin slot and to closethe coin slot as soon as the coin carrier is moved and during the whole of the movement.
I will describe my present invention in connection with the device set forth in the previous recited Letters Patent, and same will be understood by the following description aided by the annexed drawings in whichv Figure 1 is a face view and Fig. 2 a side view of the appliances aflixed to a price changer plate and showing the coin slot closed and the coin carrier at the position of rest.
Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views to Figs. 1 and 2 but showing the appliances in position with the coin slot open the coin carrier being ready for receiving the coin.
To the bark of the price changer plate A having the slot B in which the coin is inserted I secure a sliding plate C so positioned that when moved fully in one direction it opens the coin slot 13 (Fig. 2) and during the whole of the movement in the reverse direction the coin slot B will be closed, (Fig. 1), the plate C preferably sliding on pins D, E engaging slots F, G therein so that it moves in a straight direction. The pin D has a head H to retain the plate C to the plate A.
This sliding plate C has an extension I reaching to and engaging the hub J or boss of the coin carrier arm K which is pivoted at .L to the price changer plate A and is provided with a handle M projecting from the front of the plate A and by which such carrler K is operated. Projecting from the edge of the sliding plate C and just above the extension is a quadrant N having a re cess P near its end and coinciding with a recessed portion of the extension I. On the arm of the coin carrier K is a pin Q which rides. against this quadrant Nand engages the recessed portion P to move the slidin' plate C to and 5 slot B. j
The sliding plate C is provided, at one side 9f the extension I, with a strip R which proects at substantially a right angle from the plate. The strip R passes through a slot T in an arm S projecting at substantially a right angle from the price changer plate A, and to the arm S is pivoted a lever U provided w1th an opening V through which the angled strip R and the arm forming the means for locking the toothed wheel pass. The hub or boss J is cut awav as at J in such a position that as the chin carrier arm it reaches the slot B the edge of the boss is freed from the end of the extension I and permits the plate C to be moved, but in all other positions the extension I rides against the boss J and the plate is prevented frommovmg to open the slot by reason of-the end of the extension being on the opposite side of the vertical line to the main body of the plate C.
To open the coin slot ready for insertion 01: a C0111 the lever U being free from the toothed wheel W as at Fig. 1 the coin carrier It is revolved clockwise (Fig. 1) by its handle M and its pin Q slides along the quadrant N and enters the recess P, and ust as the pin reaches such mess the cutaway portion J of the boss J will reach the extension I and permit the plate C to be moved, At this time the pin Q will act upon the sliding plate C and move it to the right (Fig. 1) to open the coin slot B and 111 so doing the angled strip R will act upon lever U and move it over away from the price changer plate A so that one edge of the lever U will enter between two teeth of the wheel W, (see Fig. 4,) thus connecting the mechanism. This is done just before the coin slot B commence-s to be opened and by the time the coin slot B is fully open the lever U has fully engaged the teeth of the wheel W but the wheel is locked by the lever U immediately the lever U engages :Ero over and from the coin Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
the teeth of the wheel W. A coin is then dropped through the coin slot B into the carried X which it engages and also between two teeth of the operating wheel \V and on a reverse motion of the handle M and coin carrier X the pin Q on the coin carrier arm K Will engage the other side of the recess P and move the sliding plate C to cover the coin slot B. And the first movement of the sliding plate C the angled strip R will act upon the lever U and remove it from the toothed wheel W and allow such wheel W to be revolved, the sliding plate C being moved until the pin Q leaves the slot, the sliding plate covering the coin slot B with the end of extension I engaging the round edge of the boss J.
The arm S acts as a stop for the coin carrier and its upper part S together with a Wall Y on the coin carrier K forms a guide for the coin.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In coin freed mechanism of the character described, a toothed wheel connected With the operating mechanism, a price changer plate having a coin slot, means carried by said price changer plate adapted to engage and disengage said toothed wheel, sliding means associated with said price changer plate and adapted to cover and uncover said coin slot, means associated with said sliding. means to cause the means carried by the price changer plate to engage said toothed Wheel when said sliding means is moved into position to uncover said slot, and a coin carrier rotatable into engagement with said sliding means to actuate the latter.
2. In coin freed mechanism of the character described, a toothed wheel connected 40 with the operating mechanism, a price changer plate having a coin slot, means carried by said price changer plate adapted to engage and disengage said toothed wheel, sliding means associated with said price changer plate and adapted to cover and uncover said coin slot, means associated with said sliding means to cause said means caried by the price changer plate to engage Said toothed wheel when said sliding means is moved into position to uncover said slot, a coin carrier rotatable into engagement w th said sliding means to actuate the latter, and means associated with said coin carrier and movable into the path of said sliding means to secure the latter against movement while it covers said coin slot.
3. In coin freed mechanism of the class described, a toothed wheel connected with the operating mechanism, a price changer plate having a coin slot, a lever mounted on said price changer plate to engage the teeth of said toothed wheel, a plate slidably mounted on said price changer plate and adapted to cover and uncover said coin slot, means carried by said sliding plate to cause said lever to engage said toothed wheel when said plate is moved into position to uncover said coin slot, and a coin carrier rotatable into engagement with said sliding means to attuate the latter.
In testimony w iereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
