METHOD or AND APPARATUS roe CONCENTBATING can AND in LIKE.
' thereo f.
This invention relates to a method of and an apparatus for concentrating ores and the like in a. liquid by means of oil, tar, soap, iat, hydrocarbons or the like. The ob ect of the invention is to attain a speedy and at the same time as complete as possible separation of the metallii'erous particles of the ore from the roclr, and particularly to render possible the concentrating of specular iron ore (non-magnetic ore), which so far has proved unifieasihle in practice.
The new method consists mainly in that the ore and the oil, tar, or the like at the moment oi? entering the liquid are subjected to a vigorous agitation by means of one or more streams of liquid under high pressure. When oil is used in practising this method it is preferably gasified by previous heating in order to reduce the consumption of the same. 011 the other hand, when using tar, which has shown to great advantage in concentrating specular iron ore, it can be used in its common, liquid state, as it is very difiicult in practice to: gasify tar. It is suitable to introduce the ore and the oil, etc., into the liquid in such a manner that they mix with one another just when entering the liquid.
In practising the new method we preferably use an apparatus comprising an injector or several injectors by means of which the gasified oil and the ore are introduced into a hopper of comparatively small size so that the streams of water may effect a vigorous agitation therein; if desired the ore may be introduced into the small hopper separately from the gasified oil. From this hopper the mixture flows into a larger hopper where the separation takes place in such manner that the metalliferous particles will rise to the surface and the rock will sink to the bottom. Application filed December 31, 1913. Serial No. 809,729
Figures 1 and 2 diagrammatically two somewhat dili'erent forms of such an apparatus, partly in section,while Fig. 3 shows a section of a detail of the apparatus illustrated in Fig. 1;
In the drawings, 1 represents the larger hopper, equipped with a. surface spout 2 and l with a drain 4:, arranged to be closed by a valve 3. To the hopper 1 is attached a smaller hopper 5 in whichthe mixture is stirred.
According to Fig. 1, the ore as well as the gasified oil are both introduced into the hopper 5 through the nozzle 6 of an injector (Fig. 3). To this nozzle are connectedthe conduit 7 from the ore hopper 8, the gas pipe 9 from the retort l0, and a pipe 11 from a pump 12. In the retortlO, which is placed withina suitable furnace 13, the oil, tar, etc. is gasilied. When the oil, etc. is not to be used gasified the retort 10 and the furnace 13 will, of course, be omitted. By means oi thepump 12 a powerful stream of water is driven through the nozzle 6 and carries along through injector action gasitied oil from the pipe 9 and ore through the conduit 7.
In the hopper 5 the stream of water will cause avigorous agitation of the mixture, and the gasilied oil will adhere to the metalli'ferous particles. The mass thus treated 8 lows into'the larger hopper 1, in which the separation takes place, the surface part of the liquid together with the metalliferous particles flowing through the spout 2, while the rock sinks to the bottom and is removed through the drain 4.
' The modification illustrated in Fig. 2, which is intended for a larger production, is dilferent from that above described mainly in that the ore and the gasified oil are introduced through separate conduits into the hopper5.- The ore passes from the orehopper it directly intothe hopper 5 through the conduit 15, while the gas is introduced through the injector nozzle 16 by means of 100 a powerful stream of water. Still another water nozzle l7 is provided in order to obtain the necessary stirring, said nozzle 17 entering the hopper 5 inclose proximity to the ore conduit 15. Otherwise this apparatus operates in the same manner as the apparatus shown in Fi 1.
Having now described our invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, We declare that what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
1. The process of concentrating ore and the like consisting in introducing the ore and a selective agent into a body of separating liquid, agitating said ore and selective agent at the point of introduction 1nto the separating liquid only by a stream of liquid under high pressure, and delivering the selective agent into contact with the ore in the agitatingregion.
2. The process of concentrating ore and the like, which consists in projecting a stream of liquid into the ore and a selective agent in a common feed region, forcibly projecting the mixture thereby produced under impulse ofthe liquid stream into a restricted receptacle, and overflowing the thereby agitated mixture onto a body of flotation liquid.
3. In an apparatus for concentrating ore and the like, the combination of a hopper of comparatively small volume, means for introducing the ore into the hopper, means for introducing a selective agent into the hopper near the point of, introduction of the ore, means for introducing a stream of liquid under high pressure into the hopper near the point of introduction of the ore and the selective agent for agitating the same, and a flotation separating receptacle connected to said hopper and adapted to receive by overflow therefrom the mixture produced in the lIOp/PQI'.
4:- In an apparaus for concentrating ore and the like, the combination of a hopper of comparatively small volume, means for projecting a stream of liquid into the ore and selective agent at a common feed point in proximity to the hopper, the hopper being placed to receive the impact of the mixture under the impulse the liquid stream, and a flotation separating receptacle connected to said hopper and adapted to receive by overflow therefrom the mixture produced in the hopper.
In an apparatus for concentrating ore and the like, the combination of'a hopper of comparatively small volume, means for introducingore into the hopper, means for introducing a selective agent into the hopper near the point of introduction of the ore, means for introducing" a stream of, liquid under high pressure into the hopper near the point of introduction of the ore and the selective agent for agitating the same, said hopper being placed to receive the impact of the mixture under the impulse ofthe liquid stream, and a flotation separating receptacle connected to said hopper and adapted to receive by overflow therefrom the mixture produced in the hopper.
6. The process of concentrating ore and the like consisting in introducing the ore and a selective agent into a body of separating liquid from separate sources and agitating the mixture by a stream of liquid under high pressure.
7. The process of concentrating ore and the like consisting in introducing the ore and a selective agent into a body of separating liquid and mixing and vigorously a itating said liquid, ore, and selective agent by a high velocity stream of liquid only.
8. The process of concentrating ore and the like consisting in introducing the ore and selective agent into a body of separating liquid, agitating said ore andselectire agent at the point of introduction into the separating liquid by a stream of liquid under high pressure only, said selective agent being delivered into contact With the ore in the agitating region.
9. The process of concentrating ore and the like consisting in feeding theore and a selective agent to a body of separating liquid prior to mixing the same, and agitating said are and selective agent at the point of induction into the separating liquid by a .1; cam of liquid under high pressure.
10. In an apparatus for concentrating ore and the like the combination of a hopper of conuoaratively small volume, means for introducing the ore and a selective agent into the hopper from separate sources, means for introducing a stream of liquid at high ve loci y into the hopper for agitating the contents of the same, and a. flotation separating receptacle connected to said hopper and adapted to receive by overflow therefrom the mixture produced in the hopper.
11. In an apparatus for concentrating ore and the like the combination of a hopper and a flotation separating receptacle arranged to receive by overflow therefrom the contents of said hopper, means for supply ing ore and a selective agent to the separating liquid in said. hopper, and means for mixing and agitating the pulp and selective agent in said hopper by a stream of liquid under high pressure.
