HORN FOR USE ON ROAZD-VEHICLES AND LIKE PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 25, 1921.
Application filed May 20, 1920. Serial No. 382,962.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES EDWARD REY- NoLns, a sub ect of the King of Great Britconstruction. v
A horn constructed in accordance with the present invention comprises an inner tube with whlch 1S associated a sound producing element said tube being open at its forward end, an intermediate tube surrounding said inner tube but spaced apart therefrom,-said intermediate tube being closed at its forward end and open at its rearward end and forming a bell; and an outer tube or bell open at its forward end and surround-' ing said intermediate tube but spaced apart therefrom, said outer tube or bell being con nected at its rearward end to the inner tube by an annular cap. One or more additional tubes may be added one outside the other and each facing in an opposite direction to the one adjacent to it, said additional tubes surrounding said outer tube and being spaced apart from one another said additional tubes each being closed at one end and open at the other end.
The tubes may be co-axial and they may be spaced apart and supported by perforated rings or diaphragms.
The rearward end of the inner tube may be provided with a reed or its equivalent and with the usual bulb.
It is preferred to make all three tubes tapering, the open end of each being the larger.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view in side elevation showing a horn constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view.
In the construction illustrated the inner tube 1 consists of a length of tapering tubeopen at both ends. the larger end 2 being disposed at the front part of the horn. To the rear end 3 of this inner tube 1 is attached a sleeve 4 with which is associated a reed or its equivalent 5 and to the rear part of this sleeve 4 is attached an india rubber or like bulb 6.
Surrounding this inner tube 1 but spaced apart from it is an intermediate tube 7 which consists of a length of tapering tube with its smaller end S disposed at the front part of the horn. This smaller end 8 is closed, and this closed end is made separately as shown at 9 and secured to the tube. This closed end 9 may have a depression or inwardly bent part 10 at its center. The rearward end 11 of this intermediate tube is open.
Surrounding the intermediate tube 7 but spaced apart therefrom is anouter tube or bell 12 which consists of a tapered length of tube, the forward end 13 of which is open and may be slightly flared. The for ward edge of this outer tube may be beaded over wire 14. The rearward end of the outer tube is closed by, an annular cap 15 which is attached to the inner tube 1. This end of the outer tube may be made separately from the outer tube as shown at 16 and secured thereto and to the cap 15 and sleeve 4.
Supports are provided for the intermediate tube 7 by means of perforated rings 17 secured to the inside of the outer tube 12 and to the outside of the intermediate tube 7. These rings serve as supports and spac ing members. The member 17 which is situated toward the rear end may be omitted and projecting fingers may be left on the end of the tube '7 which fingers are bent outwardly and secured to the outer bell. Similar perforated rings 18 may be provided sccured between the inner tube 1 and the intermediate tube 7 These rings 18 however, are not strictly necessary as the inner tube is supported at its rear end 3.
It will be understood that any number of additional tubes may be provided arranged one outside the other and each having one open and one closed end, the open end of one tube being adjacent the closed end of the next tube.
What I claim then is 1. A wind operated horn comprising at least three spaced tubes disposed one within the other, the inner tube being open at both ends, the intermediate tube being closed at its forward end and open at its rearward' end, the outer tube being open at its forward end, an inner annular metal cap disposed at ing a rearwardly directed flange securedaround the inner tube, and a sound producing element associated with the inner tube.
2. A wind operated horn comprising at least three spaced tubes disposed one within the other, theinner tube being open at both ends, the intermediate tube being closed at its forward end and open at its rearward end, the outer tube being open at its forr ward end, an inner annular metal cap disposed at the rear of the outer tube and having a forwardly directed-flange secured around the inner tube, an outer annular metal cap carried by the outer tube at the rear and having a rcarwardly directed flange secured around the inner tube, spider supportcmembers carried by said tubes having integral flanges adjacent the tubes, and a sound producing element associated with the inner tube. I v V In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
