lilly present invention relates to improvements in Winding and `clutchl, inechanism designed moreespecially ,fior camping and automobile touring purposes.
'lille invention aids to provide isiniple eiiicientand easily operable ineansby which the tension on the bed bottom may be adj usted .to suit the weightlto :be carrieil, `and may `be easily relieved when thebed is to lbe linoclui-ddown.`
. lilith these nndother `obieets in view the invention includes the novel feat leso. con struction and arrangement and.combination of `parts hereinafter `ilescrilye-al and delined Ain the appended claims, ancinlmdiinent oit my invention being illustrated `in the `ariannpanying drawings in which: i
.liligure `1 isa plan :viera-foilE device partially broken away.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Figs. to inclusive aiedetail views.
lt Will be understood that my invention is designed to be used in connection with abcd bottoni which may be Wholly of `fabric such as canvas or partly of material of the flexible spring bed bottom or Wire type which is designed to be supported by a 'knock down frame aii'd have tension applied when in use.
The frame comprises an end bar 2 preterably of tubular torni, to the end ot Which is pinned aT coupling member 2. The opeiv ing or passage in the head ol this T coupling is designed to receive the end el the side member or bar (not shown) and, to assure the assembling olthe parts in proper position. the sockets of the coupling nient hers are preferably made non circular as for example by providing a flat side a. the Corresponding portions of the ends o'lthe side bars being provided with a correspoinlingly flattened portion. The side bars are preferably constructed of iron or steel tubing, andthe angular ends of` castings having portions shaped to be insertedinto the tube ends to be pinned therein.
Associated With the bar 2 are the means `my ii ui p ri i ved for applying the proper tension to the bed Specimenfemmmes "ratemeauaaa is. 1.921 Application filed October B, 191B.
`the clutch teeth in `serial no. 328,224.
bottoni which, in the preferred embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, coinprises` a tubular yinembe "7 which encircles the member 2 and i is ,designed to "be rotatable about Vsaid member 2, said member "being held concentric `with the end bar by colni- `r. y i
The end ot' `the bed `bottom. to which "tension is Ato be applied is detachably secured to this tube by any suitable means. i
' By-the tube 7 upon `the menlber)J the end of `the bed bottoni Willbewoiind up on .the
tube "7. and any desired `tension may thus be placed on `the bed bottoni.
My preferred means for operating the Winding roller and for :locking and `releasingitivillnoivbe described.
"lfhe `end oi.I the rod orbar 2 is provided with a cylindrical socletdniember `8 which is preferably formed as an integral part of the `coupling member '2a. This socket meniber provides an annular clutch ring receiving recess. around `thebar 2 Withinivhich is located a 1clutch ring 9 which has locking projections 9a `designed to Engage icorre` spondilgrecesses S in .the "annular Wall of themeniber.
A spring lO-located betiveenthe side Wall ot' the socket and the clutch ring tends to force the latter outwardly to normally hold engagement as hereinafter described.
Pinned or otherwise suitably secured on the end of the Windingtube 7 is a collar 11 Which has ratchet teeth 11 formed on the end thereof designed to coact with corresponding ratchet teeth 9" on the ring 9. Asthe ratchet ring is held against rotation `by the projections 9 engaging the recesses 8 the roller may be rotated to place tension on the bed bottom. the engagement of the ratchet teeth 11a and 9b holding it in any position to which it may be adjusted.
For conveniently rotating the Winding roller I place around the collar 11 a rotatable ring 12ivhich has an internal pawl 12aN designed to engage an annular series of Vratchet teeth 11b on the collar 11, these teeth being preferably formed on an annu lar or peripheral flange on the collar and the ring 12 being rotatably held in position by flanges or side plates 13' overlapping said flange. .A handle 14: preferably hinged or folding, is secured tothe ring 12 by Which l the latterv may b e oscillated, and, through the pawl` and ratchet mechanism described, the roller may be rotated.
For disengaging the pawl and ratchet mechanism 11a-9b, above described to release the roller, provide a rotatable collar encircling the socket member 8 which has a spring pressed dog 15a designed to engage either notch of a pair of notches or recesses 8) in the periphery of member 8.
VThis collar 15 has a ange overlying the face ofthe vmember 8 from Which project a pair of cams or beveled projections 15b designed to coact with correspondingly beveled faces on the locking projections 9a.
"When the collar 15 is oscillated in one -direction so that the'locking dog registers with one of the recesses the cams 15b will engage the projections 9a and force the ratchet ring 9 inward into the socket member until the ratchet teeth 9b are out of V` locking dog or paWl 12a', I may provide a pivotedV 'dog 12X having a rounded boss :v at its end designed to rest in a recess m in the ring 12 so that the paivl may be slipped in before the side plates 12 are secured in place and thus held Without other fastening means.`
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In combination, a bar or rod, a winding cylinder rotatably carried by the said bar, a paWl and ratchet mechanism, an os cillating handle connected With said cylinder by paWl and ratchet mechanism, ratchet clutch mechanism interposed between said bar and cylinder, and means for disconnecting said ratchet clutch mechanism.
2. In combination, an end bar or rod, a cylindrical roller rotatable about said bar, inclined clutch teeth on the end of said roller, a clutch ring slidably and non rotatably held in relation to the bar carrying saidroller and having teeth coacting with the teeth on the roller, a spring` pressing said ring toward the roller, a rotatable cam ring designed to move said ring against the tension of the spring to disengage the teeth, and means for rotating said roller.
3. In combinationan end bar or rod, a cylindrical roller rotatable about said bar, inclined clutch teeth on the end of said roller, a clutch ring slidably and non rotatably held in relation to the bar carrying said roller and having teeth coacting with the teeth on the roller, a spring pressing said ring toward the roller, a rotatable cam ring designed to move said ring against the tension of the spring to disengage the teeth,
a ring member encircling one end of the roller, pawl and ratchet means connecting said ring member and roller, and a folding handle connected to said ring member. Y
In testimony whereof, I aliix my signature.
