THADDEUS J. MoHUGI-I AND LEWIS A. WILLIAMS, 0F KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN,
ASSIGNORS TO GIBSON MANDOLIN-GUITAR (30., OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, A
CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
BRIDGE FOR STRINGED MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
Application filed May 28, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, T HADDEUS J. MoHUoH and Lewis A. lVILLiAMs, citizens of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridges for Stringed Musical Instruments, of 'ivhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bridges for stringed musical instruments.
Our improved bridge is especially designed by us as a bridge for mandolins and like instruments although it is desirable for use on other stringed instruments of this general class or type.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved bridge which may be adjusted to best serve the requirements of the instrument on which it is used or the player.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a plan view of a mandolin embodying the features of this invention, parts being shown mainly in conventional form.
Fig. II is a plan View of the bridge re moved from the instrument.
Fig. III is a side elevation of the bridge.
Fig. IV is an enlarged transverse section on a line corresponding to line 44 of Figs. II and III, the post being shown in full lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the body of a mandolin and 2 the strings. Our improved bridge comprises the base 3 which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1921.
Serial No. 384,904.
is preferably formed of wood and has threaded posts 4 projecting upwardly at the ends thereof.
The top bar 5 which is preferably formed of cast aluminum has holes 6 therein loosely engaging the posts. The top bar is supported on the posts by means of the rests 7 which are threaded upon the posts for adustment, the holes 6 being of such size that the weight or load is entirely on the rests see Fig. IV. The rests 7 are preferably knurled as shown for convenience in adjustment.
Our improved bridge is readily adjusted to meet the requirements of the particular instrument or to meet the desires of the player. lVhen adjusted, it is strong and rigid and not likely to get out of adjustment. The structure has the further advantage of being economical to produce and assemble.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a bridge for stringed musical instruments, the combination of a base of wood, upwardly projecting threaded posts at the ends of said base, a top bar of aluminuni having holes at its ends loosely engaging said posts, and rests for said top bar threaded upon said posts whereby said top bar is adjustably supported.
2. In a bridge for stringed musical instruments, the combination of a base, upwardly projecting threaded posts at the ends of said base, a top bar engaging said posts, and rests for said top bar threaded upon said posts whereby said top bar is adjustably supported.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
THADDEUS J. MoHUGH. LEWIS A. WILLIAMS.
