Be it known that I, AMos 'CALLEsoN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate of vNew York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Bottle Filling and Sealing achines, of which the following is a specification.
This application constitutes a--division of my application for patent for a bottle filling" and sealing machine filed March 30, 1916, Serial No. 87,805, on which application patentl numbered 1,252,881 was granted Jan. 8,
1918, and it consists in that part of the iinproveme'nts embraced in such machine which have to do with operations on the closures* to bring them into position over and then attach them to the bottle heads. In this specification I shall describe with detail kthe construction and operation of the parts with which this application is directly concerned, as aforesaid, 'but treat the other parts in a more or less general way excepting in so far as a detailed description thereof may be required in order to afford a clear understand ing of .the subject matterl immediately in hand.

A spiral spring 10, housed in the extension is interposed between union 5 and cap a, normall holdingl vdown the plunger to a limit afflhrded by contact of the union with the upper end of slide g. A nut 11 screwed on the upper end of tube 4 affords a fulcrum for a lever 12.
Plunger extension 9 affords a valve seat 13 at its upper end. This valve seat is normally closed by the valve 14 at the lower end of a` long spindle 15 which penetrates the plunger 3-4 and is held depressed by a. spring 16 set in the upper end of the spindle and held under compression by an arm 17 that' projects from a. rigid part 4of the extension a: of the compensating slide. On the upper end of thespindle is screwed a collar 18 by means of which, when the plunger 3-4 is stopped in the downward movement of the main and compensating slides by contact with the bottle head, lever 12 acts to produce a differential movement of the spindle relatively to the plunger, raising the spindle and hence the valve 14 from its seat, said lever being Vtilted by a dog 19 (pivoted in and bearing upwardly'against arm 17), in moving downward with the compensating slide, pressing downwardly on the free or outer end of said lever.
The filling-and sealing head s has a mouthpiece 21 provided with radially movable inwardly spring-pressed beveled guides 22, for cushioning the impact of the bottlel mouth therewith, and supporting an elastic gasket 23, a ring 24 resting on the gasket and having an internal closure-sporting ledge 25 and an annular closure a ing appliance 26, the parts 23, 24 and 26 being housed in the head 8 and penetrated by the tubular plunger extension 9. The head has at the front a closure inlet 27, which also penetrates the ring 24. The mouthpiece is supported by suitable-means unnecessary of more detailed description herein than to say that the same includes two rods 28 coupled atl their lower ends to the mouthpiece and normally drawn 'upwardly by suitable means stepped on the head s, the construction vbeing such that the mouthpiece supporting means normally causes the mouthpiece to hold the gasket compressed and is `made to release the. gasket after, in each filling operation, its sealin function is no longer'needed, all as explained in mi aforesaid application.
W en the main slide descends, the plunger 3--4 on impact with the bottle head, together with the compensating slide supported on the plunger through the medium of its extension and spring 10, will stop until, compensation being attained, pawls u lock the compensating slide to the main slide and cause the former to descend, which (as will appear) involves a comparatively slight movement, followed by the dwell which has been hereinbefore alluded to; such movement, since the plunger is prevented by the bottle from partaking thereof (spring 10' 'bein in consequencelsomewhat compressed) invo ves raising of valve spindle 15 and the consequent opening of the valve 14 for the flow of .the filling liquid to the bottle, caused by dog 19 tilting lever 12 as it descends. The dwell occurs, as explained in my said application, while the lever stands thus tilted, and u on the bottle being filled the valve must be c osed and plunger 3-4 raised enough to` elevate the plunger extension 9 clear of the bottle head and above closure inlet 27 to admit the closure to the ledge 25 of ring 24. To accomplish these functions there is provided the following mechanism.:
A bell-crank lever 29 is fulcrumed in a fixed part of the extension m ofthe compensating slide and has on one arm a roller 30 and pivoted to the other a depending hook 31'whose lower (hooked) end isv normally pressed againstl union 5 of lungen 3-4 by a spring 32 (Fig. 5) the hook vhas a depending shoe 33 adapted to coact with the up er end Vof a certain rod 34 forming a part of) the means which, as aforesaid, causes the mouthpiece supporting means to relax its pressure on the gasket 23. When, the compensating being effected, the compensating slide makes the slight downward movement mentioned relatively to the plunger 3 4, hook 31 is caused by its spring to latch under shoulder 8 on the plunger; then, immediately after the dwell, by means to be described pressure is effected on roller -30, whereby lever 29, in tilting, through the medium of the hook raises the plunger, lever 12 being caused to clear the dog 19, allowing the valve to close, and the plunger being carried up until its extension I9 is clear of he lbgottle head and above the closure inpressed retaining pawl 36 which supports the whole line of closures in the chute except when it is uplifted by the head s as the same comes to its highest elevation, allowing a closure to enter the inlet 27 and rest therein against the plunger extension 9. When the main slide and the other parts carried thereby descend and come to a dwell and then the plunger is lifted to clear'the closure inlet the waiting closure is forced onto the closure seat 25 thus: An arc-shaped gate 37 is fulcrumed in the sealing .head s between two ears 38 thereon so as to move in a horizontal plane, and i it houses a spring-pressed tongue or pusher 39 adapted to register with and enter the closure inlet when the gate is swung against the front face of the head. The fulcrum of the gate is a shaft 40 journaled in the ears 38 and a bearing 42 on the right hand ear p2 of the main slide, the shaft being splined to the gate .(F ig. 9), so as to allow relative movement vertically, and caused to reciprocate with the main slideby the collar 43 and a crank-sleeve 44 thereon abutting oppositely against the bearing 42, the former being pinned to the shaft and the latter yieldingly held against turning relativel thereto by the torsion spring 45 fastene at one end to the crank-sleeve and at the otherto a suitable head-piece 46 keyed to the shaft. The arm or crank portion of the cranksleeve is equipped with a roller 47 enga d in a cam-slot 48 in the housing m, and it as an upstandin projection 49 which normally abuts against a lug 50 on a sleeve V51 pinned to the shaft (see Figs. 7, 10 and 11). l/Vhen the main slide is vup the gate is open (Fig. 3), the closure inlet 27 being then opposed by the lower end of the chute 35; when it has descended to the'position for dwell the roller 47 is at the upper 'end of the straight part of the cam-slot forming its lower end. In the latter positionthe gate is held by the torsional pressure of spring 45 in sealing relation to the side of head s; its pusher 39 1s held retracted or `sheathed in the gate by the waiting closure housed in the mouth of the closure inlet and bearingV laterally against the plunger-extension 9. When, at the end of the dwell, the plungerextension is elevated, the closure is thrust to its seat on ledge 25 by the spring-pressed pusher'. When, after further downward movement succeeding the dwell, the main slide again rises, the cam-slot causes the gate to be-thrown o en, clear of the lower end of the chute. pring 45 eases the action of the cam-slot to close the gate, as well as exerts a yielding pressure on the gate when closed, while the positive engagement of. the projection 49 against lug 50 occurring when the roller 47 travels up the cam-slot vcauses the opening movementof the gate to be quick where it might be so sluggish `as-to involve interference of the gate-*With the chute if the turning movement were `imparted to the shaft through the spring.` j
The closure supply hopper -n has its bottom wall sloping toward the front wall 53,
which is a disk journaled on the stud54 and having beveled and peripheral gear teeth; on the back of this disk is a concentric groove 55 formed adually deeper t0- ward its outer edge. l('lrhere is a space 56 somewhat greater than the thickness of a closure between the marginal portion of the disk andthe front surface 57 of the hopper,
Awhich portion is flanked by a flange 58 that extends concentric with the disk and close enough thereto to retain the closures in said space except at the bottom, where an opening 59 (Fig. 3) is left to admit the closures to the chute; surface 57 is plane except for a rounded rib 60 registering with 1groove 55. The disk has two vsets of apertures 61 in alternating radii, one set beingin a circle of less diameter than, and the other registering with, the groove. Secured by suitable means lto the Vouter face of the disk are yielding agitator-s 62 in the form of rebent lengths vof wire) which project through the apertures. An incased suitably journaled rotary agitator 63 (herein taking the form of a toothed wheel meshing with the peripheral teeth of the'disk'53) is arranged with its periphery projecting slightly into the chute and also into the space 56. Through the medium of the shaft 64 journaled in the hopper and equipped with a driving pulley 65 and with a bevel pinion 66 meshing with the beveled teeth of the disk, the latter and the agitator 63 are rotated in the direction of -the arrow seen Fig. 3. A mass of closuresplaced indiscriminately in the hopper will be tumbled by the relatively inner set of agitators 62, thus promoting their being faced properly to pass .the coacting rib and groove 55 (see myk Patent No. 1,042,068) any which would otherwise remain caught in the groove are dislodged by the relatively outer set of agitators; and, finally, any that might tend to clog the outlet (entrance to the chute) are disturbed by the agitator 63, which further prevents congestion at the outlet, due to the chute filling up with the closures, by directing the surplus to the right and so back into the mass in the hopper along the upwardly curving runway which the righthand part ofthe `flange 58 forms. The pulley 65. is driven by a belt 67 extending around a pulley 68 on shaft g.
In suitable bearings in pedestal a and housing b is journaled a vertical shaft69 provided at its upper end with a vertically elongated arm -70 or actuating the lever 29 and at its lower end with a crank 71 having a roller 72 engaged in the groove of the barrel cam 73 on shaft g.
Operation: In the position of the parts as shown in Fig. 5, which may be taken as the inception of a cycle the compensatingslide is supported by its fiange r on the top of the main slide, which is fully elevated; the plunger 3-4 is fully depressed in the compensating slide, as also the valve 14, which thus prevents the liquid flow; hook 31 is held bearing against the back of shoulder V8 by spring 32, lever 29 in turn bearing against the' arm 70 of lever 69; the closure check-36 is retracted by the head s, so that the lowermost closure in the line rests against the side of the plunger-extension 9; and the te 37 is in the open position (Fig. 3). en the main slide descends there occur the follow ing operations, already indicated: Arresting of the downward movement with the main slide of the compensating slide as soon as the lunger-extension comes to rest on the bottle, thus to effect compensation, followed by'pawls u locking the compensating slide to the main slide and the compensating slide then moving downward relatively to the plunger, whose spring 10 is put under compression, such movement of the compensating Slide with the main slide being just enough to enter the bottle head intg the contracted gasket without clearing \the plunger-extension 9 from the gasket; at this point, in the construction hereln illustrated, the dwell hereinbefore noted, occurs. Meanwhile the closure check has resumed checking position and the downward movement of the main slide has resulted in the gate 37 closing so that its pusher'presses the waiting closure in inlet 27 against the plunger-extension 9. The slight downward movement of the compensating slide with the main slide eected opening of the valve 14 and resulted in the hook 31 latching under the shoulder 8. The filling being completed and the dwell ceasing, the main slide continues downward, positively carrying down with it the compensating slide, still locked thereto by the pawls u, the result of which movement is ultimately to perform the closure-aflimng operation. But the plunger 3-4 must be raised to shut off the liquid flow and elevate plunger-extension 9 above the inlet and also clear of the bottle head to enable the pusher to introduce the waiting closure to the ledge 25, over the bottle head, and this is accomplished by cam 73 imparting a quick movement to lever 69 which rocks lever 29 on its fulcrum. The downward movement is now completed, resulting first in the plunger coming to bear on the closure, now superimposed on the bottle head, and next in the closure fiange (the closure for which the machine illustrated is especially ada ted being of the so-called Crown typeig. 8) being bent by the appliance into locking engagement with t e usual'shoulder on the bottle, the plunger (its spring yielding) and bottle holding the cork-lined closure under compression until the aflixing is finally effected; in this movement roller 30 of lever 29 runs down the vertical face of arm 70, the extension of the compensating slide being at that time supported by its roller y bearing against ho per n. At the end of the downward stro e, after the plunger again is opposed by the bottle, shoe 33 of hook 31 wipes against the rounded top of rod 34 and thus retracts the hook clear of shoulder 8.
On the return or upward stroke, the plunger first comes to its normal position in the Vcompensating slide, ejecting the bottle head from the head s, and then the compensating slide resumes its normal position in the main slide (its flange r resting on the latter). The hook 31 clears shoulder 8 because it has been retracted as above stated and lever ,69 has been retracted by its cam; and as lever 19 rises with the compensating slide it is simply `wiped idly aside by lever 12. In the upstroke the gate is opened by the camslot 48 and thus made to clear theplower end of the chute, and at the end of such upstroke the closure check is retracted by head 3 so as to admit another closure to inlet 27.
The term coacting means to exert closureaflixing pressure hereinafter used in the claims will be understood as referrin in the present disclosure, on the one han to the structure which supports the bottles and includes fixed frame parts of the machine and, on the other,to the structure movable up and down and at the front of the housing b andcarrying the sealing head.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Incombuation, coacting means to exertclosure-aixing pressure on a container and its closure interposed between them, one of said means including a closure-receiving head having a closure-receiving throat and a closure-inlet leading laterally to said throat, means to deliver a closure into the inlet, said head being movable, during the closureaflixing thrust of said coacting means, away from the closure delivery means and with the one of the coacting means which includes such head, and means to` press the delivered closure into the throat upon said movement.
2. In combination, coacting means to exert closure-afiixing pressure on a container and its closure interposed between them, one of said means including a closure-receivingA head having a closure-receiving throat and a closure-inlet leading laterally .to said throat, means to deliver a closure into the inlet, said head being movable, during the working thrust of said coacting means, awa from the closure delivery means and wi the one of the coacting means which includes such head, an inlet obstructin device in the throat, means to press the de ivered closure against said device upon such movement, and means thereu n to withdraw said device clear of the inlet to admit the closure t0 the throat.
3. In combination, coacting means, movable one toward and from the other, for exerting closure-axing pressure on a container and its closureinter between them, one of said means inclu a closurereceiving head having a closure inlet, a closure-a meansin the head,'and a closure intr uc' appliance movable on an axis substantia y parallel with the pressure thrust line of said means and arranged, in one and havin a movementeffecting engagement with t e other of them.
4. In combination, coacting means, movable one toward and from 4the other, for exerting closure-aixing pressure on a container and its closure interposed between them, one of said means including a closurereceivingv head hav' a closure-inlet, a closure-ailixing means in the head, a back and forth movable closure introducing appliance movable in one -of said coacting means and a spring normally urging said applianeedin one direction, said ap liance belng engageable by the other of sal coacting means and thereby adapted t0 be moved in the opposite direction.
5. In combination, coacting means, movable one toward and from the other, for exerting closure-aiiixing pressure on a con.- tainer and its closure interposed between them, one of said means including a closurereceiving head having a closure-inlet, a closure-aixinl means in the head, and a closure intro ucing appliance movable on an axis substantially parallel with the pressure thrust line of said means and arranged in one and having a movement-dieet' engagement with the other of them, sai appliance having an elastic closure pusher.
6. In eombmation, coacting means, movable one toward and from the other, for exerting closure-aixing pressure on a container and its closure interposed between them, one of said means including a closurereceiving head having a closure inlet a closure-axin means in the. head, an a closure intro ucing appliance movable on an axis substantially parallel with the pressure thrust line of said means and arranged in one of them, the other of said means havin a cam engaging said ap liance.
