CONTACT-BREAKER, MOUNTING.
Application filed April 18, 1918.
To all whom 2'15 may concern.
Be it known that I, MICHEL FnLnrNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Contact-Breaker Mountings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to contact breakers for high tension magnetos, and it has for an object to provide an improved mounting for the contact breaker arm which is durable, steady, reliable and flexible to assure the free operation of the arm at all times.
Another object is the provision of a retaining member for the contact breaker arm which assists in maintaining the true oscillation of this arm.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims and drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a contact breaker disk, and,
Fig. 2 is a cross section therethrough.
Referring to the drawings in which the several features are clearly shown, 10 indicates the face plate. which has a hub 11 formed on the back thereof, and this plate is attached to the armature shaft by a screw 12. The screw 12 passes through an insulating bushing 13, and this screw also passes through a contact block 1 1. The block 1% is partly held by the screw 12, and has its opposite end held both, to the plate, and against movement by a screw 15.
An insulating insert 16 is placed between the face plate and block to electrically insulate the block from the face plate. This block has an arm 17 which supports a screw L by having the screw enter a threaded socket in said arm to permit the desired adjustment of an electrical contact carried by this screw with respect to a movable one. A look nut 19 is carried by the screw 18 to prevent accidental movement of the screw by vibration when in use.
A hearing pin 20 is riveted in the face plate as at 21, and this pin has a shoulder 22 formed thereon which limits the approach of a contact breaker arm to the plate 10. This contact breaker arm 23 has an undercut recess formed therein in which a number of fiber bearing washers are inlaid,

These washers are drilled to receive the pin 20 and form a bearing, oscillating on this pin, which retains its form and fits infinitely better than metal working on metal, and owing to the nature of the fibrous substance, the shocks and vibrations incident to the operation of the arm 23 do not have a damaging effect on this hearing.
A fiber cap 26 rests in the reduced end of the recess to close the end, and to receive the end of a spring member 29 which is constrained to press the arm 23 in bearing relation with the shoulder 22.
The contact breaker arm 23 carries a contact 2'? which engages with the contact screw 18, until this arm is rocked by the fiber shoe 28 which is disposed in the path of lugs or oiisets to establish engagement as the face plate is rotated.
The spring 29 is carried by a post which is formed on the face plate 10, and this spring may be swung from over the cap 26, when it is desired to remove the arm 23. A spring 31 is also positioned to exert its influence on the arm 23, and is constrained to hold the contacts 18 and 27 in engagement. taclied to the arm 2-3, and the other end is attached to a post 33 formed on the plate 10. Having thus described this invention, 1 claim;
1. In a contact breaker mounting, a face plate having a bearing pin projecting therefrom, said pin having a shoulder next said face plate, a circuit breaking oscillating arm mounted upon the pin, a fibrous bearing member interposed between the pin and oscillating arm, said arm having a shoulder cooperating with the shoulder on the pin to include the fibrous bearing member therebetween so that the thrust between said shoulders is applied to the entire length of hearing member.
2. In a contact breaker mounting, a face plate having a pin mounting thereon, an oscillating metallic contact arm mounted upon the pin; said arm being perforated to form a bearing surface, a fibrous bearing member upon the pin between same and the oscillating arm, a fibrous non-wearing cap held upon the oscillating arm concentric with the supporting pin, means engaging the bearing cap to retain the oscillating arm in position and a fibrous contacting shoe for oscillating the arm.
3. A contact breaker mounting comprising a pin, a shoulder formed on said pin, an arm pivotally mounted upon said pin having oscillation in opposite directions, Said arm having an enlarged opening formed therein to receive said pin, a plurality of fiber washers secured in said opening to engage said pin, a cap carried by said arm for the open end of said enlarged opening and a yieldable member pressing ,on said cap to hold said arm in bearing engagement with said shoulder.
