UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT V'. CALKINS, OF LONGMONT, COLORADO.
WINDMILL.
Application nled April 20, 1920.
'ltate of Colorado, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in findmills; and l do hereby declare the following toLbe a full, clear, and exact description of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to maire and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in windmills and has for its primary object the provision of means whereby a plurality of windwheels may be employed for driving a power taire-off, so as to provide'a device capable of developing a large amount of power and which may be employed for driving an electric generator for heating, lighting, and other purposes, or the device may be used to operate large machinery or pumps.
AnotherA object of this invention is the provision of a supporting frame or structure-carried by` tower and capable of supporting a vpower take-off and windwheels at each end and front and rear thereof, so that said frame or structure will be evenly balancedby said wheels and each wheel so positioned that one will not obstruct the wind from the other or the frame or structure obstruct the'wind from any one of said wheels.
A further object of this invention is the provision of-a windwheel of the above stated charac-ter, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
-IWith these andotherobjects in view as willbecome more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel .ffeaturesg of construction, combination, and arrangementiof parts as will be hereinafter A more fully described and claimed.- l I For a complet understanding of my invention, reference is to bel had to the following description and accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating a windmill constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the same,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view illustrating the means of sup- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

porting the. frame on the tower and also the supporting of the front and rear windwheels.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a tower carrying at its upper end a platform or supporting flange 2 surrounded by an annular flange 3 to receive a table 4 which has journaled thereto rollers 5 that bear on the supporting flange or table 2, so that the table 4 can have free rotation in relation to the tower 1. An annular member 6 is secured to the table 4 and extends downwardly through the flange or supporting table 2 and has formed thereon a flange 7 that underlies the flange 2 to prevent the table 4 from becoming detached from the tower 1 but will permit free rotation of the table 4. Ball bearings S are interposed between the annular member 6 and the flange 2 so as to reduce the friction to a minimum between the flange 7 and the annular member G during the rotation of the fable 4. i
The table 4 has secured thereto an elongated supporting frame or structure 9 whichl has forwardly and rearwardly extending portions 10 and 11 formed integrally with the same and at a point where the frame or structure 9 fastens to the table 4. The forwardly extending portion 10 has formed thereon a downwardly depending supporting arm 12 while the portion 11 has formed thereon an upwardly extending supporting arm 13. The supporting structure 9, portions 10 and 1l and the supporting arms 12 and 13 are constructed from angle iron which arms are strengthened and reinforced by braces 14.
A shaft 15 is journaled in webs 16 carried by the frame or supporting structure 9 and extends substantially the full length of said frame or supporting structure, and has secured to its ends bevel gears 17 that mesh with bevel gears 1S. The bevel' gears 18 areI secured to shafts 19 that extend forwardly of the frame 9 and have secured thereto windwheels 2O and 21. The windwheels are so constructed that the wind will cause them to rotate in opposite directions. A bevel gear 22 is secured to the shaft 15 at a lpoint 'l above the table 4 and is connected to forwardly and rearwardly extending shafts 23 and 24 by bevel gears 25 and the shafts 23 and 24 are journaled in the forward and rearward portions 10 and 11 respectively.
The shaft 24 has secured to its rear end a bevel pinion 26 which meshes with a bevel pinion 27 secured to a shaft 28 journaled in the arm 13 and which has secured thereto a bevel pinion 29 that meshes with a pinion 30 secured to a shaft 31. The shaft 31 is journaled in the arm 13 and extends forwardly thereof and has secured thereto a windwheel 32. The shaft 23 has secured to its forward end a bevel pinion 33 which meshes with a bevel pinion 34 secured to the upper end of a shaft 35. The shaft 35 is journaled in the arm 12 and has secured to its lower end a bevel pinion 36 that meshes with a pinion 37 secured to a shaft 38. The shaft 38 is journaled in the arm 12 and extends forwardly thereof and has secured thereto a windwheel 39. The blades of the windwheels 39 and 32 are so constructed as to cause said windwheels to rotate in opposite directions.
A sprocket wheel 40 is secured to the shaft 15 adjacent the pinion 22 and has mounted thereon an endless sprocket chain 41 which extends downwardly through an opening in the table 4 and through the annular member 6 and is trained over a pinion 42 secured to a shaft 43 journaled in a bracket '44. The bracket 44 is carried by a hanger 46 that is secured to the annular member 6 and depends downwardly therefrom within the tower 1 and supports a generator 47. An endless chain 48 is connected to the generator 47 and to a comparatively large sprocket wheel 49 secured to the stub shaft 43, thus it will be seen that the generator will be driven by the windwheel.
It is to be understood that the shaft 15 or the sprocket wheel 40 may be connected in any desired manner to other machinery or to pumps for operatingA them by the rotation of said windwheels.
A vane 50 is pivoted to the rearwardly extending portionll and as illustrated at 51 andr engages a stop 52 carried by said portion 11 when in one position or in a position to hold the windwheels in the wind. Cables 52 are connected to opposite sidesof the vane 50 and pass over pulleys 53 carried by the frame 9 and pass downwardly to av point adjacent the ground so that a person can readily operate the vane 50 to readily stop or start the windmill.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understoodv that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what claim is:
1. A windmill comprising a tower, a table rotatably mounted on said tower, a frame carried by said table, windwheels carried by said frame, a shaft journaled in said frame, l
carried by the table, windwheels carried byy said frame, a shaft journaled in said frame, means connecting the shaft to the wheels, a hanger secured to the table and depending downwardly within the tower, a generator carried by said hanger, and means connecting the generator to the shaft for rotatingv said generator at a higherrate of speed than the rotation of said shaft.
3. A windmill including a tower, a turn table mounted on said tower, an elongated frame secured to the table, forwardly and rearwardly extending portions formed on said frame, windwheels journaled to the ends of said frame, supporting arms secured to` the ends of the forwardly and rearwardly extending portions and disposed in opposite directions, windwheels journaled to said arms, a shaft journaled in said frame, means connecting the shaft to the wheels, and a power take-off connected to the shaft.
4. A windmill including a tower, a table mounted on said tower, a frame carried by said table, windwheels journaled to the ends of said frame, forwardly and rearwardly extending portions formed on said frame intermediate its ends, upwardl and downwardly extending arms forme on said portions, windwheels journaled to said arms,- a shaft journaled in said frame, means connecting the shafty to the wheels, a vane pivoted to the rearwardly extendin portions, a stop carried by said rearwar ly extending portions to be engaged by the vane for limiting the movement of the same in one direction, and means connected' to the vane for swinging the same on its pivot.
In testimony whereof'I ax my signature in presence of'two witnesses.
