INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH ARDO, OF NEWI-IALL, WEST VIRGINIA.
SAFETY-BOAT.
Application filed July 1, 1920.
To all who 1'12, it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Anno, citizen of the United States, residing at Newhall, in the county of McDowell and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to life-boats for ships and it has for an object to provide a novel form of life-boat characterized by great stability.
More specifically the invention has for an object to provide such a boat with the compartment for the occupants mounted to prevent rolling movement.
Another object relates to the provision of a novel form of steering mechanism.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of a ships life-boat constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section thereof.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Figs. 2 and 4:.
Fig. 4.- is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
As here shown my improved boat comprises an outer hull of circular cross section and divided into a lower member 1 and an upper member 2 which are joined together in any suitable manner, the member 1 having the usual fore and aft stream line construction, this member being hereinafter referred to as the hull and the member 2 as the cover, this latter being pro vided with suitable doors 3 and portholes 4.
Within the hull 1 is pivotally suspended an inner hull 5 which is adapted to contain the occupants of the boat, this hull being pivoted on an axis extending along the median line of the boat, and being provided at opposite ends and near the top thereof with socket projections 6 which take over studs 7 on the hull 1, antifriction bearings 8 being preferably provided between the sockets and studs.
In order to enable the boat to be steered from within the inner hull 5 the rear stud Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented-Jan. 11, 1921.
Serial No. 393,349.
7 is made hollow and the tiller ropes 9 are led forwardly from the usual rudder 10 through this hollow stud and into the inner hull 5 which is provided with a suitable registering perforation. These tiller ropes 9 are connected at their forward end to opposite sides of a disk 11 pivoted on a bracket 12 on the stern of the inner hull 5. This disk 11 has rigidly fixed thereto a bevel gear 13 which is engaged by a second bevel gear 11 on a pintle 15 projecting forwardly from the bracket 12, the steering wheel 16 being rigid with the bevel gear 1d. As shown most clearly in Fig. 2, the face of the disk 11 is substantially in the axial line of the stud 7 so that the relative swinging movement of the outer and inner hulls will not have any disturbing influence on the rudder, which, as will be apparent, can be readily operated from within the inner hull. To maintain the stability of the boat the outer hull 1 has fixed to the underside thereof a keel which preferably consists of a tube 18 having a weight 19 extending along the underside thereof, while to maintain fore and aft stability and keep the bow of the boat from dipping too deeply into the waves a pair of tapering tubes 20 are secured on the sides of the hull adjacent the bow these tubes inclining downwardly and outwardly from the bow rearwardly and decreasing in width from front to rear ends. The boat may be propelled by a series of propellers of which one pair, 22 are mounted on longitudinally extending stub shafts 23, and the other pair 2 1, on transverse shafts 25. The shafts 23 and 25 have bevel gears 26 and 27 respectively on their inner ends, the gears 26 meshing direct with bevel gears 28 on opposite ends of a drive shaft 29, the gears 27 and 28 engaging through the medium of idlers 30, standards 31 being provided for supporting these gears. The shaft 29 may be driven by a suitable motor not shown. Y
My improved life-boat may be carried in the usual manner on the deck of a ship and may be lowered by the usual means. When in the water the occupants will be completely sheltered from waves or flying spray while the construction reduces to a minimum rolling movement of the compartment containing the occupants.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as folleading from said rudder to said disk, a
lows bevel gear fixed co-axially to said disk, a 10 A life-boat comprising an outer hull, an second bevel gear meshing with the first inner hull pivotally suspended in said outer bevel gear, and a steering wheel fixed co- 5 hull, the rear suspension member for the axially to said second bevel gear.
inner hull having an axial opening there- In testimony whereof I have aflixed my through, a rudder, a disk pivotally mounted signature this 24th day of June, 1920.
at the stern of the inner hull, tiller ropes JOSEPH ARDO.
