To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHERMAN H. PAX'roN, a citizen of the United. States, residing at St. Paul, Minnesota, have invented certa n new and useful Improvements in Hand Marking or Printing Devices, of which .the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hand marking or printing devices.
The main objects of this inventon are:
First to provide an improved marking device well adapted for the marking of packages or parcels having yielding and more or less uneven surfaces.
Second, to provide an improved marking device which may be conveniently and rapidly manipulated.
Third, to provide an improved hand mark ing device having a rotating; printing roller which may be operated in either directlon.
Fourth, to provide an improved hand marking device which produces clear imprints and may be operated a large number of times without replenishing the lnk sup- P y- Fifth, to provide animproved hand marking device in which the operative parts are all incased so that they are protected from dust and kept sanitary and the hands of the operator are not likely to come into contact with the ink.
Sixth, to provide an improved marking device in which the parts are simple and economical to produce and assemble, various parts being duplicates, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed outin the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanvino. drawinct. forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, andthe sectional. views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a housing consisting of a central body portion 1 and detachable side plates 2. The side plates are duplicates. The parts may be conveniently made as die casting. The body member 1 is shell-like and provided with lugs 3 adapted to receive the side plate attaching screws 4. At its lower end the body member has an opening at 5. At its upper end it has a threaded extension 6. adapted to receive the handle 7. The side plates 2 have opposed bosses 8 toward their upper ends adapted to receive the shaft 9 for the ink supplying roller 10 carrying the inking pad 11. The ink may be supplied to this pad, as required, by removing the handle 7.
At their lower endsv the side plates 2 are provided with opposed bosses 12. into which the printing roller stub spindles 13 are threaded. Between the bosses 8 and 12 the side plates have horizontal otlisets providhorizontal internal channels 14.
The printing roller 1.5 is mounted on: the inner ends of the spindles 13, which have thrust collars 16 supporting the printing roller longitudinally. On the outer sides of these thrust collars are driving members 17, having driving; lugs l8 coacting with the internal driving lugs 19 of the printing roller, the lugs 18 of the driving members being disposed on opposite sidesof the driving lugs 19 of the printing roller, as is clearly shown. in Figs. IV and V.
The driving members 17 are actuated by the coiled springs 20, which are arranged within the barrels 21 provided therefor on the side members, the barrels being concentric with the bosses 12. The outer ends of these springs are engaged through slots 22, see Fig. VII, while their inner ends are engaged with notches 23 in the driving members, see Figs. IV and V. Thus arranged, the springs act oppositely to return the printing roller to its initial position, one spring acting to return it when the roller is rotated in one direction, and the other acting to return it when it is rotated in the opposite direction.
The roller has recesses 24 in its ends which receive the mechanism described, thereby permitting a compact arrangement of the parts. With the parts thus arranged, the roller is yieldingly held in its initial position and may be actuated in either direction by placing it upon the surface to receive the imprint and moving thereon in either direction. As soon as raised from the surface, one or the other of the springs will return the roller to its initial position.
The type shown conventionally at 25 is preferably formed of rubber and I preferably form the resilient annular tread members 26 integral therewith. These resilient tread members 26 are disposed at the ends of the printing roller and serve to support it during its rotation across blank spaces in the type, and also prevent the type being pressed down to such an extent as would produce blurred and irregular imprints. The type is shown as molded in tegral, but it will be understood that type may be inserted, and this is particularly desirable where the device is used as a dating stamp.
The ink is transferred to the printing roller from the supply roller by means of the inking rollers 27, which are arranged oppositely to engage with both the printing and supply roller. These inking rollers are provided with floating shafts 28 connected by the coiled springs 29, so that the rollers are held yieldingly against the printing and supply rollers, and they accommodate themselves to variations or irregularities therein, such as variations in the type, or variations in the inking pad, and other irregularities. The channels of the side plates accommodate these springs 29.
The rollers are provided with disks 30 at their ends, providing flanges which travel on the printing roller on the inside of their treads, the inking rollers being of such length that the flanges lie at the ends of the supply roller. These flanges perform the double purpose of supporting the inking rollers when they travel over the blank spaces in the type, and also guarding the treads so that they do not become covered with ink, in whirh case they would mark the surface receiving the imprint.
The rollers arranged in pairs transfer the ink to the printing roller when it is rotated in either direction, so that in use it is kept properly supplied with ink. This arrangement of parts permits the structure to be made very compact, and, at the same time, the supply and printing rollers may be of substantial dimensions. The supply roller is rotated in operation so that the ink carried thereby is effectively distributed to the inking rollers and by them to the printing roller. The tension of the springs 29 is such that while the inking rollers are held yieldingly in position, they are not held against the inking roller with such stress as to cause them to take an undue supply of ink. The ink can be supplied, as stated, through the top of the housing by removing the handle 7 The casing, as thus formed, is dust proof, the working parts are protected so that the structure is clean and sanitary, and does not smudge or smear the surface on which it is laid. The parts are quite simple and economical to produce, and are designed so that they may be easily assembled and adjusted in use. The structure is strong and capable of withstanding very severe usage.
I have illustrated and described myimprovements in an embodiment or adaptation which I find very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other adaptations or embodiments, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a housing comprising removable side plates having opposed spindle supporting bosses surrounded by spring housing barrels, spindles threaded into said bosses and provided with collars, a printing roller mounted on said spindles at the inner sides of their said collars, said roller being recessed at its ends to receive said spring housing barrels, and having alined internal driving lugs, a pair of driving members counted on said spindles at the outer sides of said collars and provided with driving lugs engaging the said driving lugs of said roller on opposite sides thereof, oppositely acting coiled springs arranged in said barrels with their outer ends connected thereto and their inner ends connected to said driving members so that when the roller is rotated in either direction from its initial position, it is returned to its initial position by one of said springs, said roller being pro vided with resilient type and with continuous resilient treads at itsends, and means for inking said roller as it is rotated.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a housing comprising removable side plates having opposed spindle supporting bosses surrounded by spring housing barrels, spindles threaded into said bosses and provided with collars, aprinting roller mounted on said spindles at the inner sides of their said collars, said roller being recessed at its ends to receive said spring housing barrels, an'dhaving aline'dinternal drlvmg lugs, a pair of driv ng members mounted on said spindles at the outer sides of said collars, and provided with driving lugs engaging the said driving lugs of said roller on opposite sides thereof, oppositely acting coiled springs arranged in said barrels with their outer ends connected thereto and their inner ends connected to said driving members so that when the roller is 1'0- tated in either direction from its initial position, it is returned to its initial position by one of said springs.
In a structure of the class described, the combination of a housing open at the bottom, a printingroller mounted in said housing to project through said opening and having recesses at its ends with alined driving lugs therein, said roller being provided with resilient type and treads, oppositely disposed. spindles provided with thrust col lars for said roller, a pair oi oppositelyacting coiled springs connected at their outer ends to said. housing, a pair of driving members mounted on said spindles at the outer sides of said collars, the inner ends or said springs being connected to said driving members, said driving members being pro vided with driving lugs engaging opposite sides ot said driving lugs on said roller so that when the roller is rotated in either direction it is returned to its initial position by one of said springs when released, and means for inking said roller as it is rotated.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a housing, a printing roller mounted in said housing to rotate in either direction from an initial position and having alined drivinglugs, rotatable driving members mounted. at the ends of said printing roller and havingdriving lugs en- ,printing roller and having driving lugs gaging opposite sides of the driving lugs of said printing roller, and oppositely acting springs connected at one end to said housing and at their other ends to said driving members so that when the roller is rotated in either direction from its initial position it is returned to that position by one oi: said springs when released.
6. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a housing, a printing roller mounted in said housing to rotate in either direction from an initial position and having driving lugs, rotatable driving mem bers having driving lugs engaging opposite sides of the driving lugs of said printing roller, and oppositely acting springs connected at one end to said housing and at their other ends to said driving members so that when the roller is rotated in either direction from its initial position it is returned to that position by one of said. springs when released.
7. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller provided with driving lugs, driving members having driving lugs coacting with opposite sides of said printing roller driving lugs, and oppositely acting springs connected to said driving members so that when the roller is rotated in either direction it is returned to its initial position by one of said springs.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller rotatable in either direction from an initial. position, said roller being provided with an an n'ular resilient tread, means for returning said roller to its initial position when ro-- tated' in either direction including oppo sitely acting springs, said springs being operatively'associated with said. roller so that one spring is neutral when the other. is in action, and means for inking said. roller as it is rotated 9. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller rot table in either direction from an initial position, means for returning said roller to its initial position when rotated in either direction including oppositely acting springs, said springs being operatively associated with said roller so that one spring is neutral when the other is in action, and means for inkingsaid roller as it is rotated.
10. Ina structure of the class described,
the combination oi a housing, a nting roller mounted 1n said housing to 1 tate 1n either direction from an initial position and having alined driving lugs, said roller being provided with resilient type and resilient annular treads at its ends, rotatable driving members mounted at the ends of said ongaging opposite sides of the driving lugs of said printing roller, oppositely acting coiled springs connected at one end to said housing and at their other ends to said. driving members so that when the roller is rotated in either direction from its initial position it is returned to that position by one 01". said springs, an ink supply roller mounted in a spaced relation to said printing roller, a pair of inking rollers disposed oppositely between said inking and supply rollers to coact with both, said inking rollers being provided with floating spindles and with disks traveling on said printing roller at the inside of its said treads and at the ends of said supply roller, and springs connecting the ends of said floating spindles whereby the inking rollers are held yieldingly against the supply and printing rollers.
11. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a housing, a printing roller mounted in said housing to rotate in either direction from an initial. position and having alined driving lugs, rotatable driving members mounted at the ends of said printing roller and having driving lugs engaging opposite sides of the driving lugs of said printing roller, oppositely acting springs connected at one end to said housing and at their other ends to said driving members so that when the roller is rotated in either direction from its initial position it is returned to that position by one of said springs, an ink supply rollermounted in a spaced relation to said printing roller, a pair of inking rollers disposed oppositely between said inking and supply rollers to coact with both, said inking rollers being provided with floating spindles and with disks traveling on said printing roller at the inside of itssaid treads and at the ends of said supply roller, and springs connecting the ends of said floating spindles whereby the inking rollers are held yieldingly against the supply and printing rollers.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller rotatable in either direction from its initial position, means for stopping said roller at its initial-position, spring means for returning said roller to its initial position when it is rotated in either direction therefrom, an ink supply roller disposed in a spaced relation to said printing roller, a pair oi inking rollers disposed oppositely between said sup ply and printing rollers and coacting with both, floating spindles for said rollers, and springs connecting the ends of said spindles so that the inking rollers are held yieldingly against the supply and printing rollers.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller rota table in either direction from its initial. position, means for stopping said roller at its initial position, spring means for returning said roller to its initial position when it is rotated in either direction therefrom an ink supply roller disposed in a spaced relation to said printin roller, a pair of floating inking rollers disposed between and on opposite sides of said supply and printing rollers to coact with both, and a resilient connection for said roller.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller provided with resilient type and resilient treads at its ends, an ink supply roller mounted in said housing in a spaced relation to said printing roller, a pair of inking rollers disposed oppositely between said printing and supply rollers coacting with both, said inking rollers being provided with floating spindles, and springs connecting the ends of said inking roller spindles whereby they are yieldingly held against the supply and printing rollers, said inking rollers being provided with flanges at their ends traveling on the printing roller within its said treads. I

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller adapted to rotate in either direction from an initial position, said roller being provided with annular treads disposed at the outside of the type carried thereby, means for automatically returning said roller to its initial position, an ink supply roller mounted in a spaced relation to said printing roller, a pair of floating inking rollers disposed between said inking and supply rollers to 00- act with both, said inking rollers being provided with flanges traveling on said printing roller on the inside of its said treads, and springs connecting said rollers whereby they are held yieldingly against the supply and printing rollers.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller adapted to rotate in either direction from an initial position, means for automatically returning said roller to its initial position, an ink supply roller mounted in a spaced relation to said printing roller, a pair of floating inking rollers disposed between said inking and supply rollers to coact with both, and springs connecting said rollers whereby they are held yieldingly against the supply and printing rollers.
17, In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller provided with annular resilient treads at its ends, an ink supply roller mounted in spaced relation to said printing roller, a pair of inking rollers disposed oppositely between said printing and supply rollers coacting with both, and means for yieldably supporting said inking rollers against the supply and printing rollers, said inking rollers being provided with flanges traveling on the printing roller Within its said treads 18. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller, said roller being provided with annular treads disposed at the outside of the type carried thereby, an ink supply roller mounted in a spaced relation to'said printing roller, and a pair of inking rollers disposed between said inking and supply rollers coacting with both, said inking rollers being provided with flanges traveling on said printing roller at the inside of its said treads.
19. In a structure oi the class described, the combination of a printing roller provided with annular resilient treads, the treads being disposed at the outside of the type on the roller, an ink supply roller mounted in spaced relation to said printing roller, and an inking roller held yieldingly against said printing and supply rollers and provided with flanges traveling on said printing roller between its said treads and type whereby the treads are protected from the ink, and the inking roller is supported while passing blank spaces in the printing roller.
20. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a printing roller provided with resilient type and with resilient annular treads i'orined integrally therewith, the treads being disposed at the outside oi the type, a supply roller mounted in spaced relation to said printing roller, and a floating inking roller held yieldingly against said printing and supply rollers and provided with flanges traveling on said printing roller on the inside oi its said treads whereby the treads are protected from the ink.
21. In a structure of the class described,
the combination of a printing roller provided with annular resilient treads, a supply roller mounted in spaced relation to said printing roller, and a floating inking roller held yieldingly against said printing and supply roller and provided with flanges traveling on said printing roller on the inside oif its said treads whereby the treads are protected from the ink.
22. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a housing open at the bottom and comprising removable side plates having opposed supply roller shaft bosses at their upper ends and opposed printing roller spindle bosses at their lower ends, and offsets providing integral horizontal channels intermediate of said pairs oi into said channels, and coiled springs con-' necting the ends of said shafts disposed in said channels.
