2 SHEETS-SHEET l- UNETEQ PATENT @FFECE.
RAFFAELE BACCELLIEBI, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
JUICE-EXTEAG'IING PRESS.
Application filed October 28, 1920.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BAFFAELE Bnoonnder to cause an advance of the pressure means upon a screw threaded post or the like. Furthermore the workman must stand in awkward position in order to manipulate the hand-wheel and the operation is slow both during the pressing action and also in returning the pressure element to its normal position away from the fruit.
Une object of my present invention is to provide means which will facilitate the eX- traction of juice from fruits in hand-operated presses.
Another object is to provide means of simple construction for the above mentioned purpose which will quicken the operation both during the extraction of the juice and also in the return movement of the squeezing element or elements to the normal position.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, i attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying; drawings in which- Figure l is an elevation, partly in section. showing my invention connected to a fruit juice extracting press.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved actuating means with the handles removed Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on the line dlof Fig. 8,
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. d; the section extending through the pivot bolt and rivets; the other parts being illustrated in outside View,
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a modified form of my actuating means, and
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, 8 represents a press of any suitable character including $pecification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 420,137.
a base 9 which has a flange 10 to provide a receptacle 11 for the juice asit is squeezed outwardly between the slats 12 of the container 13; said container resting on the base 9. A post 14, which is screw threaded at its upper end, permits one or more pressure blocks 15 to be inserted loosely thereover; said blocks being illustrated in dot-and-dash lines. "l e post 14: at its bottom is secured to a plate 14 which is secured by bolts 16 to the base 9. My invention includes a ratchet wheel 17 which has a central screw threaded hole 18 formed in a hub 19. This ratchet is adapted to fit on the screw threaded end of the post 14: with the threads of said post engaging the threads of the hole 18.
Two plates 20 and 21 are mounted at each side of the ratchet wheel and have holes through which the hub 19 extends. Between these two plates is secured a projecting member 22 by rivets 28. The projecting member.
22 extends from a socket 24 in which a handle 25 can be freely inserted and withdrawn; said handle being shown in dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 1. A second socket 26 has a projecting pawl extending therefrom so as to fit freely between the opposite portions of the plates 20 and 21 and a pivot bolt 28 extends through the plates 20 and 21 and through the pawl 27. This pawl 27, as clearly shown in Fig. v5., has two opposite end portions 29 and 30, which when the socket 26 is swung on the bolt 28 as a pivot, will engage between the teeth 31 of the ratchet wheel 17. A handle 32, as shown in dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 1, can be inserted within the socket 26. A downwardly flaring collar 33 is adapted to loosely fit on the upper end of the post 1% and bear against the blocks 15. This flared collar is preferably made of metal and forms a direct con tact with the bottom plate 21 to facilitate the turning of the device in a manner hereinafter described.
From the above description it is obvious that when the projection 27 of the socket 26 1S swung in one direction to move either of the pawl ends 29 or 30 in between the teeth 31 of the ratchet wheel 17 that a continued movement of said socket 26 will cause the ratchet wheel to be rotated and the entire device will move downwardly on the post 14. The handles 25 and 32 may be made of extended length to increase the leverage and in this manner it is an easy matter to rotate the device to cause the material within the container 13 to be squeezed and the juice thereof to run into the receptacle 11. After the material Within said container has been sufficiently compressed to eXtract all of the juice, the device may be raised on the post 14 by swinging the handle 32 in an opposite direction to withdraw the previously meshing pawl end and insert the ether one, and a reverse movement of the handle 32 will cause the device to be raised on the post 14 and thereby returned to its normal elevated position. This device can be either operated by a single person or two or more persons if so desired and it will be noted that it is not necessary to entirely rotate the device since an oscillating movement imparted to the handle 32 will effect a step by step movement of the ratchet if after each oscillating movement of the plates 20 and 21 on the hub 19, the pawls are moved into a posi tion to escape the teeth 31 of the ratchet wheel so as to allow the acting pawl to get behind the next teeth in the series of the ratchet wheel 17.
The projection 22, by being securely riveted to the plates 20 and 21, requires that the handle 25 only move in a single direction since there is a direct connection between the socket. 24, handle 25 and plates 20 and 21.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the structure is substantially similar to that above described with eXception that there is only one socket provided; the opposite socket being eliminated and since the ratchet wheel is operated in the same manner by a projection on a socket, l have given the same reference numerals to corresponding parts.
l Vhile I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i. In a device of the character described, the combination of a screw threaded post; a ratchet wheel in connection with the threads of the post; means freely rotatable with respect to said ratchet wheel; a double ended pawl pivotally connected to said latter means; and a handle connected to said double ended pawl; substantially as described.
'2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a screw threaded post; a ratchet wheel in connection with the threads of the post; means freely rotatable with respect to said ratchet wheel; a double ended pawl pivotally connected to said latter means; a socket connected to said double ended pawl; and a handle adapted to freely fit within said socket; substantially as described.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a screw threaded post; a ratchet wheel in connection with the threads of the post, said ratchet wheel including a hub; plates rotatably mounted on said hub; a double ended pawl pivotally connected between said plates, either end of the pawl being adapted to engage said ratchet wheel when the pawl is swung on its pivot; and a handle connected to said pawl; substantially as described.
a. In a device of the character described, the combination of a screw threaded post; a ratchet wheel in connection with the threads of the post; means freely rotatable with respect to said ratchet wheel; a double ended pawl pivotally connected to said latter means; a handle connected to said double ended pawl; and a second handle in fixed relation to said first means; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
