OTIS A. H'UCKAIBEE A'ND WILLIAM T. HU'CKABEE, OF TEXARKANA, ARKANSAS,
TRACTOR FRAME AND CARRIAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed March 8, 1919. Serial No. 281,349.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, OTIS A. HUCKABEE and WILLIAM T. HUOKABEE, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Texarkanafin the county of Miller and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tractor Frames and Carriages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a tractor-frame and carriage more particularly to novel means for adapting the same carriage or frame for plowing or breaking purposes and for cultivation purposes.
The object of invention is the provision of simple and eflicient means for quickly converting a carriage or frame into a plowing-type of an apparatus or into a cultivating-type of an apparatus.
With this and other objects in view, our invention comprises certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention and adapted for plowing or breaking purposes, while Fig. 2 is a top plan view of our apparatus shown adjusted for cultivating purposes.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, l designates the main frame, and 2 designates the lateral extensions onboth sides thereof.
The main frame 1 is made up of side bars 3, a front sectional bar 4:, and a rear angle bar 5. Crossed bars 6 brace the sides and ends of the main frame, and at the central portion of bars 6 is a central bracing plate 7 Front bracing plates 8 are secured to the inner corners of the main frame (Fig. 1), and rear bracing plates 9 are secured to the rear corners of the main frame.
The lateral extensions 2 comprise the outer side pieces 10, which are connected, at their inner ends, to connecting plates 11. Each side piece 10 is provided with an inner angularly disposed portion 10 (Fig. 1).
The front sectional bar 4 extends across the lateral extension 2, at 12, and then this bar is'braced through the medium of parallel pieces, or bars, or beams 13; the general configuration of the front of the frame of the apparatus is V-shaped, as shown. In other words, our frame comprises a V- shaped front portion 14, provided at its rearw1th a main frame 1, and with lateral extensions 2.
The guiding wheel 15 is suitably j ournaled upon vertical shaft 16, which shaft 16 extends through a part of the front portion of the V-shaped frame 14.
l/Ve provide two supporting wheels 17 journaled upon crank axles 18. The upper or inner portion 19 of each crank axle 18 1s always mounted in angle bolt brackets 20. In the breaking or plowing position, Fig. 1, the inner ends of the crank axles are positioned under the rear angle bar or plate 5 and two angle bolt brackets 20 secure the inner end of each crank axle to the primary frame. Each bracket 20 is provided with nuts 21 upon its ends for fastening the bracket in place.
In Fig. 1 the supporting wheels are positioned for plowing purposes, but if it is de sired to convert the apparatus into a carriage for cultivating purposes, all that is necessary is to remove the crank axles from off the angle bolt brackets carried by the main frame, then place a air of angle closure plates 24 in position 'or connecting the rear ends, at 25, of the lateral extensions 2 to the main frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Each plate 24 is detachably secured to the plates 9 and 27. An angle piece 28 is fastened at the inner end of each angle plate 24: and is also fastened to the side 3 of the main frame, when the apparatus is converted into a cultivating apparatus, as shown in Fig. 2. A pair of angle bolt brackets 20 are positioned upon the angle closure plates 24 in the same manner as when the apparatus is converted for plowing or breaking purposes; the location and position of the brackets being clearly shown in Fig. 2.
A link connecting device 22 is used in conjunction with each crank axle, whether the apparatus is being used for cultivating or plowing purposes.
From the foregoing description, it is to be understood that we have invented a durable and efficient apparatus that can be quickly converted for plowing or cultivating purposes, and that this apparatus is for carrying a plow or plows, or cultivator teeth, and which is adapted to support a tractor engine as well, but as no claim is presented for the manner of attaching the teeth or plows or supporting the tractor engine on the frame, no specific disclosure of these applications is made, but mere mentioning of the same was thought advisable to further point out the application or utility of our apparatus.
We reserve the right to make such minor alterations or changes in our apparatus as shall appear to one skilled in the art to which the same relates, and which alterations or changes shall fairly fall within the sec e of the appended claim.
hat we claim is: Y
In an apparatus of the class described, the
combination with. a main frame, of lateral extensions fastened to said main frame, axles detachably secured to the rear end of the main frame and extending at their outer ends between the main frame and the lateral extensions, wheels on said axles between the main frame and the lateral extensions and extending rearwardly beyond the rear end of the main frame, and means for also fastening the axles t0 the rear end of the main frame and the rear end of said lateral extensions, whereby the wheels will be carried on the axles outside of the lateral extensions.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afii our signatures.
OTIS A. I-IUOKABEE. WILLIAM T. HUCKABEE.
