OIL-CUP.
Application filed April 11, 1919.
To all whom t lmay concern.:
Be it known that I, ALEXIS R. PRIBIL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cups, of which the following is a? specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a cap or cover for oil cups and more particularly to a hinged cover and means for yieldingly holding the cover in closed position. The object of the invention is to providea simple construction which may be cheaply manufactured and in which a spring is so arranged as to hold the cover in either open or closed position. A further object is to provide a construction which is such that both cover and cup may be formed by stamping operations and ease of assembly secured.
With these and other ends in view, the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the 'appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section through a device embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cover in open position;
Fig. 3 is a partial transverse section of the cup showing the cover in elevation and open position;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cover; and
Fig. 5, a perspective view of the device.
As shown in the drawing, 1 indicates a cup body which may be formed by stamping or drawing operations to give it any desired configuration but with a hollow lateral projection 2.at one side formed by pressing, drawing or otherwise forming a portion of the upper edge of the body laterally outward to provide a hollow projection on the body at one side, which projection provides a place of attachment or a hinge ear for the cap or cover 3.
T his cover 3 is preferably formed of sheet metal which is pressed or stamped into shape with an annular rim or iiange 4 to tit over the upper edge of the body outside the same and also with a forwardly projecting portion 5 which when the cover is in closed position, serves as a lug or handle by means of which the cover may be readily opened or turned upon its hinge connection with the body. the cover, the same is formed with a projection by extending a portion of the flange laterally, the extended portions 6 of said iiange forming hinge ears 7 which are connected by the integral extended portion 8 of the top wall or body of the cover.
The ears 7 lare spaced apart just suiiiciently to fit over or embrace the lateral projection 2 on the cup body and the wall 8 which connects these ears and is an integral part of the cover body, is raised slightly above the plane of the upper surface of said body to provide clearance for a spring tongue 9 on a spring disk 10 which is stamped from a flat sheet of spring steel and of a shape to fit closely within the flange of the cover against the top wall or body ofthe cover, the tongue 9 projecting laterally from the spring disk into the space between the ears 7. To permit of a free yielding movement of this tongue, the disk is slit inwardly along the lines of the side edges of the tongue as at 11, and the channel 12 formedin ythe-top of the cover by the raised portion 8 of the body lies directly over this tongue and extends inwardly of the body beyond the ends of the slits 11 to provide ample clearance for the tongue so that it may freely yield upwardly or toward the cover wall.
The cover is pivotally connected to the cup body by a pintle 13 passing through openings in the ears 7 and openings in the side walls of the hollow projection ,2, the cover being thus held in such position that the free end of the tongue 9 will rest upon the upper edge of the rear wall of the projection 2 on the cup body and yieldingly hold the cover in closed position. When the cover is turned on its pivot, the spring tongue will be iiexed in passing over the outer angle of the edge of said wall and when the cover reaches a substantially vertical position as shown in Fig. 2 said tongue springs into engagement with the outer surface of the wall and yieldingly holds the cover in open position.
The form of the cup body permits of its being cheaply manufactured by means of dies with the projection thereon forming a hinge member thus obviating the necessity for securing a separate hinge member thereto and also a seat for the spring, the upper edge of the body being also provided with diametrically opposed notches 14 for the engagement of a suitable tool by means of which the cup may be turned to screw it into place in mounting it for use. The form of the cover is also such that it may be readily formed up in dies and the spring disk may be blanked out and then pressed into the cover to secure it thereto, no rivets or other fastening means being necessary to hold it in place.
Obviously, changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of the inven tion and I do not therefore Wish to limit Inyself to the particular form or arrangement shown.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is l. In an oil cup, the combination of a body formed with an offset rim portion with the upper edge of the end Wall of the offset portion'in the plane of the upper edge of the body, a cover having a lateral extension pivotally connected to the offset portion and Vformed with a groove extending into the lateral extension, and a sheet metal plate fitting Within the cover and l'ormed With a fiat spring tongue opposite said groove to engage the upper edge of the end Wall of the oset portion of the body to hold the cover in closed position and to engage the outer side of said end Wall When the cover is turned on its pivot andhold said cover in open position.
2. In an oil cup, the combination of a body having an offset portion, the rim of said body and offset portion extending in a single horizontal plane, a cover pivotally attached to said odset portion of the body, and a sheet metal plate secured in the cover and having an integral iat spring tongue extending laterally from the plate in engagement with the rim of sa'id offset portion.v
3. In an oil cup, the combination of a cup body, formed of sheet metal With an oil-set portion forming a hollow lateral extension at the rim of the cup body opening into the interior thereof, a cover formed of sheet metal with a down-turned edge flange and a lateral extension having side flanges forming ears to embrace said oif-set portion, the body of the cover being also formed with a raised portion forming a groove extending the width of the extension, a pintle pivotallyconnectngsaid ears to said offset portion, and a plate fitting Within the cover with its edge in Contact With the cover liange to hold the plate in place and formed with a spring 4tongue opposite the groove in the cover with its free end engaging the edge of the end Wall of the oit-set portion and adapted to engage the outer side of said portion when the cover is turned on its pintle to hold the cover in open position.
