Description

G. J. F. KRAFT.
Treadles for Sewing-Machines.
$10,136,377, PatefitedMarch4,1873.
WITNESSES INVENTOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CHARLES J. F. KRAFT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TREADLES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
. t Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,377, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLEs J. F. KRAFT,
of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Sewing- Machine Treadle, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to that class of treadles in which there are two sandals connected at the heels to swinging levers suspended to the table-top. The toes of said sandals are connected to cranks on a crank-shaft, located near the lower part of the stand.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a front or side view. Fig. 2 is an end view of a sewing-machine table, with part of stand or legs removed, showing my improved treadle.
A A represent a sewing-machine table, of the usual style. B is a crank-shaft, located near the floor, and having its journals arranged in the sides of the stand. 0 G are swing levers, suspended on the under side of the tabletop, near the front edge. D D are sandals, pivoted at the heels to the lower ends of the levers O 0, and which swing back and forth with the levers. The toes of the sandals have a forward-projecting arm, E, connecting with cranks b b on the shaft B. The cranks are arranged opposite to each other, which gives an alternate motion to the treadles.
The feet of the operator have a regular Walking motion, moving back and forth. At the.
same time the toes have an up and down movement, making this a kind of velocipedetreadle.
On the shaft 13 is a pulley-wheel, F, which is connected with a pulley, G, playing on a stud in the side of the table, and has also connected with it a balance-wheel, H.
I am aware that it is not new to attach the treadles to swinging levers pivoted to the table, and connecting with the cranks of the main shaft; and therefore I do not claim this combination, broadly; but
I claim The sandals D, when pivoted at their backs or heels to the swinging rods 0, and connected directly to the crank-shaft B, situated below the drive-wheel, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
