Specification of Letters Patent. Pa$3ntgfi B 23 192) Application filed May 25, 1920. Serial No. 384,077.
To all to hom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE F. BELLA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stevens Point, in the county of Portage and State of lVisconsin, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Extracting Tractors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for extracting tractors and the like from mud holes, and the invention resides particularly in a pulley attachment for the driven supporting wheels of tractors adapted to have a cable anchored thereto and then wound thereon by the power of the engine of the tractor so that when the other end of the cable is anchored to some distant point, an extraction or displacement of the tractor from a mud hole, ditch or the like will be effected.
An object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the above character, an extremely simple, durable and eflicient pulley attachment for the driven supporting wheels of tractors so constructed as to enable the same to be readily and rigidly applied to as well as readily removed from the wheel as found necessary and desirable.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and. arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is' a fragmentary elevational view of a tractor with the present invention applied thereto so as to illustrate the inannor in which it is used, the pulley per 86 being partly broken away,
Fig. 2 is a'substantially central vertical sectional view taken through the wall and pulley of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 taken at some distance to one side of the wheel axle whereby the pulley of the invention is illustrated in edge elevation.
Fig. 4c is an enlarged perspective view of one of the hub engaging segments,
5 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of the pulley per 86, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the attaching rods, partly broken away.
Referring more in detail to the several \uews, a portion of a tractor A is shown in Fig. 1, the supporting wheel a of said tractor being shown as standing in a mud hole or d1tch as at B.- Usually, the operation of extractingthe tractor from a mud hole or the like is quite a laborious and objectionable one for various well known reasons. and often times the wheel a simply revolves under englne power without tractive effort so that the extraction of the tractor is practically lmpossible without the aid of some external device. This is often times true even in wow of the fact that the usual rim 5 of the wheel a is provided with'non-slipplng tread members 6. Accordingly, the present invention is designed to provide a 11111311 improved means for supplying this nee In the preferred embodiment of the in ventlon, the same includes a metallic drum or pulley 7 which is of substantially U- shape in cross section and which is provided at suitable intervals with outwardly proecting rigid ears 8 upon the inner flange thereof. The threaded shanks or bolts 9 are passed through the apertures of the ears 8 and also through alined apertures prov1ded in theouter spokes 10 of the tractor supporting wheel a. Extending radially inwardly from the inner face of the wheel rim 5 at regular intervals are four pairs of spaced rigid cars 11, each pair of which issituated centrally between the adjacent pairs of cars 8 as shown in Fig. 1. An attaching rod 12 provided with a central eye 13 and end eyes 14 is arranged tangentially of the wheel a, one attaching rod being provided between each ear 8 and the pairs of cars 11 at each side thereof, the bolts 9 each extending through a central eye'13 of a connecting rod 12. The end eyes l l'of adjacent connecting rods 12 thus overlap between the ears of each pair 11 and are attached to said pair of ears by bolts or the like 15. It will thus be seen that the four attaching or connecting rods 12 provide a substantially rectangular frame work anchored at its corners to the rim of the wheel a and intermediate its corners 011 all sides to the pulley 7' whereby the latter is quite rigidly and detachably'fastened in place.
Some means must be provided to insure positioning of the drum 7 concentric with the rim 5 of the wheel a or with the vehicle axle 16, and it is preferable that this means Radially adjustable spokes are provided for the drum 7, and each spoke comprises a pair of screws 19, respectively of right and left hand pitch and adjustably connected by a turn buckle knot 20, one of the screws19 being fastened at its outer end pivotally'or otherwise as at 21 to inwardly projecting ears 22 formed on the drum 7, and the inner end of the other screw of each spoke being provided with a hub engaging segment 23. Each segment 23 embodies an arcuate plate having inwardly projecting lugs 24 upon its inner edge arranged to hook over the disk 18 whereby the segment is held against outward displacementfor relieving the drum 7 of outward strains. Each segment is also provided with a central inwardly projecting radial shoe 25 which has its inner end curved to fit around the enlargement 26 provided on hereinbefore described, and the cable 30 has the airle 16, and the connection of each seg' ment with the inner screw 19 of each spoke may be a p votal one by passlng a rivet or bolt 27 through said screw as well as an outwardly projecting flange 29 provided in spaced relation on the outer edge of the plate of each segment. Obviously, with this construction, the turning of the turn buckle nuts 20 inone direction effects firm engagement of the shoes 25 with the enlargement 26 so that the drum is rigidly fixed in position after the attaching rods 12 have been applied as shown in Fig. 1. It will also be seen that turning of the nuts 26 in the opposite direction will cause a withdrawal of the shoes 15'from the enlargement 26 and disengagement of the lugs 24 from the disk -18 so that the drum 7 may be readily removed upon detachment of the rods 12. Further, the making of the connections 21 and 27 pivotal ones, will allow swinging of the drum spokes and segments so that the shoes 25 may accommodate themselves to their proper position upon the enlargement 26.
At any suitable point around the same, the drum may be provided with means for anchoring one end of a cable 30 thereto for insuring winding of said cable on the drum 7 when the latter is rotated.
In operation, the drum 5 is applied to the wheel a as clearly shown in the drawings and one'end anchored to the drum 7 while its other end may be attached to some distant rigid member such as the peg 31 which is shown driven into the ground in Fig.1. The
engine of the tractor is then started for caustractor and this results in extraction of the latter from the mud hole, ditch or the like.
From the foregoing description it is believed that the construction and operation of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the in vention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. In a device for extracting vehicles from mud holes or the like, the combination with a vehicle wheel having a rim provided with a plurality of rigid equally spaced inwardly projecting ears, of a drum rim having a plurality of outwardly projecting rigid ears positioned intermediate the ears of the wheel rim, and attaching rods arranged in end to end angular formation and each having its ends connected to adjacent ears of the wheel rim and its intermediate of the drum rim.
2. In combination with a drum rim having means to'rigidly attach the same to and concentrically within the rim of a vehicle supporting wheel, radial spokes adjustable in length projecting inwardly from and carried by said drum rim, and hub engaging segments carried upon the inner ends of said drum spokes including inwardly projecting diskengaging lugs for supporting the drum rim against outward displacement.
8. In combinationwith a drum rimhaving means to rigidly attach the same to and concentrically within the rim of a vehicle supporting wheel, radial spokes adjustable in length projecting inwardly from and carried by said drum rim, hub engaging segments carried upon the inner ends of said drum spokes including inwardly projecting disk engaging lugs for supporting the drum rim against outward displacement, each of said spokes involving a pair of screws respectively of right and left hand pitch and adjustably connected by a turn buckle nut, one of said screws being pivotally connected to the drum rim, and the other of said screws being pivotally connected to a hub engaging segment.
4. In combination with a drum'rim having means to rigidly attach the same to the rim of'a vehicle supporting wheel, radial spokes portion to one ear from and carried by said drum rim, and hub engaging segments carried upon the inner ends of said drum spokes and each including an arcuate band having end inwardly projecting lugs upon its inner edge.
5. In combination With a drum rim having means to rigidly attach the same to the rim of a vehicle supporting Wheel, radial spokes adjustable in length projecting inwardly from and carried by said drum rim,
hub engaging segments carried upon the innor ends of said drum spokes and each including an arouate band having end inwardly projecting lugs upon its inner edge, and a central inwardly projecting shoe having a concaved inner end face.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
