Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2d., 192@ Application tiled February 2, 920. Serial Ito. 355,@33.
To al! 'zo/Lam t 'moy concern: i l Be it known that l, CHARLns Mns, a citizen of the United States, residing et Roches ter, in the county 03T Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new und useful Improvements in Spot-Light Mounts, of which the following is e specllcation.
The objectief this invention is to provide e new ond improved spot light mount by which any insite' of spot light cen be mounted on the donne oi the cer and operated from the dash zindpleced in any desired position or turned et any angle that 'may be desired to iiiuinin'ete the roe-d.
rThis and other objects of the invention will be fully illustrated ih the drawings, described in the specificstion and pointed out in the claims et the' end thereof. ln the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 represents e. perspective view of Athe engine hood and desh bozirdv showing,` the spot light in position thereon.
Fig. 2' is a. vertical section through the universel joint on the .line 2X-2h of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is n, vertical section through the rocking joint on 'the dome.
Fig'. i is s section through the dash, the
I ports being shown on e larger scnlethan the corresponding parte in Fip. l.
Fig. 5 is n section on the line 5X-5X of Fie". el, lookingv in the direction oil the arrow.
"ig 6 isV a detail view of the joint bei tween the stem 16 and erm Fig. T is n. det-.lil view ot' the stern l@ eX- Atended through an inclined dome.
ln the drawings, like reference numerals indicate like perte.
ln the dinivings, reference numeral 1 indicates the dash board of the automobile, 2 indicates he engine hood and 3 indicates the dome of the engine hood. 0n the dash boord l isl placed e washer ll having an opening centrally therethrough. This Washer is thick on top and thin on the bottom. On the top it is threaded to receive the thumb nut 5. rthrough this Washer extends the rod G which has n series of notches or recesses 2' on the under side thereof suitable to engage with the edge of the lower halt of the Washer, by which engagement the rod 6 con be held in any desired position permitting the movement of 'the rod in and out to any position and the looking thereof injthet po l si tion.
engagement of the notches with theinner edge of the Washer at various places. The
rod 6 and positively hold 1t down in its locked engagement.- This locked engagement does not. prevent or interfere with the turning ofthe rod 6 on its axis or the tiltingI of the rod in the washer for apurpose that will presently be described. On the beck ost the dash board is placed a. spring 7A Which normally holds into iocked engagement and permits the rod to be readil shifted from one position to another. I beck of it is countersunk to permit the tilting or swinging of the rod (i.
0n the rear end of the rod 6 is provided the rod 6 down the dash board is thick, the
the T shaped handle 8 by which it may be operated. 0n the forward end of the rod 6 is provided the block 9 having a `recess therein adopted to contain the ball 10 of a bell joint. in adjusting block l1 is ro` vided which engages the bell l0. he block 11 is held in position by e spring l2 and screw 13, which screw may be turned to place any desired tension on the moving block 1l by which e firm engagement may be obtained with'the bell joint 10. The bell l() is on the upper end of a stem 14, which stem has :i threaded engagement with the erm 15 and is locked thereon by e nut.` The arm l5 is carried on the stem 16 made oiE '3 steel tubing. The erm 15 is rigidly fastenednt the bottom of the stem in any suitable nidanner. A pinched joint held closed by e set screw 17 is shown in Fig'. 6 and is used for this purpose. The
` stem 16 extends up through the dome and carries on the top thereof the spot light 18, the shell of which light is clamped thereon by nuts lend lock Washers carried on the stem 16, both inside end outside of the shell oi the lamp.
Where the shell of the lamp is not perpendiculer to the stem that passes through it, the tilting of the shell is taken care ol by cutting o nut diagonally to correspond to the inclination of the shell and placing one half of the nut below the shell and the other half of the nut above the shell. The upper heli oi' the nut is clamped in place by e loclr 'washer end nut on the stem. 0n the stem 16 is provided the nut 25 on top of which is supported o. tension springr 26. @n top of this spring is o flot wesher? with o half of a rubber ball or o cone 28 on top thereof, which bell or cone beers `on the under side. or the dome and prevents water leaking through. 0n top of the dome is provided a washer 29 which is dished to act as a. bearing and on top of this washer is alaced a rubber ball 30. On top of the bal 30 is placed a washer 3l on top ot' which rests the nut 32 on the bottom part ot the lamp. Then the nut 25 is tightened up, the lamp isV drawn down on the ball 30.
lVhere the dome of the hood is inclined, the'stem 1G passes through it perpendicular thereto and thefy upper end of the tube is then bent to an upright position as shown in rig. 7.
The operation oi my derioe is as tol lows i/ vWhen it is desired to tilt the lamp down, the ope ator draws thelrod 6 and handle of toward him. Then he wishes to tilt the lamp up, 'he pushes the handle and rod awa)7 from him. liilhen he wishes to turn the lamp to one side, he moves the handle t5 Vto the right or left swinging the rod 6 on the dash board as a center and this, in turn, swings the arm l5 and turns stem 16 and turns the lamp as well. The handle can then be twisted to turn the lamp up or down at an angle. In this way, the spot light can be turned to throw its light in any direction. The rubber ball 50 and cone 2S and spring 26 hold the lamp firmly in position and prevent rattlingancl still give sufhcientelasticity to permit its movement in any directirm de sired.'
l claim: 1. ln a spot light mount, the combination ot a stemya spot light mounted thereon, said stem extending through the engine hood ot an automobilej a rubber ball surrouiuling said stem, a dished washer below said ball resting on top ot' the hood and supportingl the light. i
