Application filed .Tune 26, 1920. Serial No. 391,861.
To all. whom it may concer/n.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new andv useful ImprovementsA in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use'the.
same.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly to devices of this class designed to be used in connection with doors of motor vehicles, but which may also be used in connection with other` doors or swinging members, and the object ofthe invention is to provide a die-cast hinge or liingemeifiibery of the class specified, and means for reinforcing and strengthening said hinge or hinge member by a sheet metal part tashioned to conform with the general form of the hinge or hinge member thus materially decreasing the cost of production of the hinge member and yet producing an article of the class described having the desired strength and durability; a further object being to provide reinforcing and strengthening means composed' of a plurality' of -structed as sheet metal parts secured together and which form a part of the complete die-cast hinge, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, conhereinater described and claimed. f'
`The invention' is fully disclosed in the fol-y lowing speciication, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which y Figure 1 is a plan view of the separate parts of my improved hinge connected with a door and door frame with part of the construction brokenaway and in section; i
Fig. 2 a horizontal sectional view through the complete hinge with parts in a different position from that shown in Fig. 1 and with part of the construction broken away;
Fig. 3 a face view of one of the members of the hinge shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
` 15 is .enlarged Fig. 1 a perspective view of the reinforcing means employed in the construction shown in Figs. lto 5 inclusive;
Fig. -5 a section on the line 5 5 of F ig. 3 with part of the construction broken away;
Fig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 8 but showing only a part of the construction and showing a modification;
F1g.`7 a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing only a part of the construction and showing another modilication; and,
Fig. 8 a 'partial section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7. l In Figs. 1 and 2--of the drawing, I have indicated at 10 a part of the door frame and in Fig.`1, I have indicated at 11 a part cfa door, and my complete hinge comprises a `hinge member 12 which, in the construction shown is secured to the door frame 10 and hinge member 13 which is secured to the door 11 and movable therewith. The separate hinge members 12 and 13 are secured together and movable one upon another on a pivot 14 which passes through the separate hinge members.
The invention described and claimed herein relates particularly to the hingev member 12 and inrFigs. l to f5 inclusive, I have shown oe form of construction for carrying my invention into effect.
' The hinge member 12 is die-cast and comprises a main body portion l5 having screw apertures 16. One end of the body portion and substantially hooksliaped in form as portion is provided, in the form of construction shown, in said `figures, with two projecting and substantially hook-shaped ears 18 having apertures 19 through which the pivot pin 14 is adapted to pass.
shown at 17 and said end In constructing the hinge member 12 Id directed {fanges 22, thusl fashionihg sai-d plate into substantially channeled or U- llhe supplemental plate 21, or the end portion 25 thereof, is fashioned to conform l. end portion of said supplemental plate is with and fit within the corresponding end portion of the main plate 20, while the\other fashioned to form two substantially hookshaped members 26' 'oined-by a central portion 27 inwardly of membrs and the central portion 27 is fashioned to conform with the hook-shaped end .portion 17 of the main plate 26, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawing, while the parts 28 of said members at the opposite sides of the central portion 27 are located inwardly of the part 20 to form*l a space 29 which is -illed in with the die-cast material of the hinge in making up the hinge.
mation as to conformJwjth the shape Jof the ears 18 of the' complete hinge and f or'm outer facings 31 therefor, as clearly shown l in Fig. 3' of the `drawing,and the' parts 28 of the members 26 extend partially around the periphery of the ears 18'of the hinge meml' ber as shown -at 32 in Fig.- 5 of the draw-` ing to reinforce that portion of the complete hinge member through lwhich the pivotpin passes.
In forming the completed hinge member 12 and after the reinforcing means comprising the main and su plemental plates 20 and 21 have been secure together-to produce the result shown in Fig. 4, the same is placed in a suitable die or mold ands the complete hinge member is formed by a die-cast body 33 which fills in the channeled portion of the members 20 and 21 as well as thev channeled portionsl of the members 26 of the plate 21 and vthe resultshown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive and in Fig. 5 is produced.
In forming the screw-holes or apertures 16, I preferably form the countersunk portions 34 of such holes in the die-cast portion of the hinge member, after which the remaining portions of the holes are either punched or drilled through the plates 20 and 21.
In t e construction vshown in` Fig. 6 I have sown a hinge member 12 made in a slightly different manner by simply fashmeeste in Fig. 6.
the free ends of said sired manner.
complete' member, it being understood that the lpivot pin aperture 19 will'` extend through the pntiremember 35 in the construction shown In the construction shown inFi'gs. 7 and -8 of the drawing I have shown the hinge member 12 made in the same general form as that of said hinge member shown in Figs. 1' and 5 inclusive, except.y that the supple-v mental reinforcing plate 21 is `omitted and the .plate 20 alone is employed. In this form o f construction the main body portion 15 as well asthe substantially hook-shaped ears 18 of the hinge member 12, independent of the plate 20, -may be made of die-cast,
'for ed orl otherwise, fashioned' material whichis secured to the plate 20 in any deioning the two substantially hook-shaped e5' I -From the foregoing it will be seen that in constructing the hinge member 12, I may' f `employ a. reinforcing means comprising a It will be noted that the flange portions 30 of the supplemental plate 21 vextend j through the members 26 and are of such forderstood that I am vnot necessarily limited in' this respect, and various changesin and mod1ficat1ons of the constructlon herein shown and describedmay be made, within the scope of thefappended -claims, without departing from the 'spirit of myk invention 'o1' sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described myV invention,
what I claim as' new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f 1. A die cast hinge member ofthe class described composed ofy a die cast body, one end portion of whichis enlarged and extends at anangle to the main Abody portion there- I of, a "s'heetmetal plateforming a facing for one side face and the top and bottom faces of said die cast body, and a 'supplemental sheet metal plate within said first named plate and extending through'said die cast body and forming a facing for a portion of the enlarged end of said die' cast body.
2. A ldie cast hinge member'of the class described composed of a die cast body, one
-end portion of which is enlarged and extends at an angle tothe main body portion therev erse dimensions than the main body portion of said body, a sheet metal plate form',-
y of, said enlarged end being of 'less transing a facing for one side face and the top and bottom faces of said die cast body, and a supplemental sheet metal plate Within said first named plate and extending through Said die cast body and forming a facing for ortion of the enlarged end of said die cast n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 10 25th day of June 1920.
