DOOR-OPERATING- DEVICE FOR SELF-DUMPING MINE-CARS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD Cross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bicknell, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Operating Devices for Self-Dumping Mine-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an automatic door operating mechanism for self dumping mine cars and has particular reference to a door operating device for mine cars for use in connection with the hoisting and dumping apparatus disclosed and claimed in Patent No. 1,092,889.
My invention has for its particular object the provision of a mechanism'which will be positive in its operation and which, should the mine car be raised to a point beyond which it dumps in normal operation by an overwinding of the hoisting cable, neither the car nor the door opening mechanism will be damaged or broken.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a mine car door operating mechanism which may be adjusted to dif ferent sizes of mine cars, without the necessity of altering the tower structure, and also which may be adjusted to suit different conditions of dumping so as to insure a quick acting and efficient door operating appa ratus.
My invention will be further and better understood by reference to the accompanyin sheets of drawings in whichi igure 1 is a side elevation of a mine car and dumping apparatus in successive stages of operation and showing my improved door operating mechanism;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation showing the mine car in fully dumped position.
Referring now specifically to the drawings and in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout, a mine cage platform 10 is shown having a tilting or dumping platform 11 mounted thereon by means of a pair of links 12. A mine car 13 is mounted upon the dumping platform 11 and which has an end gate or door 14 pivotally secured to the mine car 13 by means of bolts 15 in each side of the mine car. hook or finger 16 is secured to the outer end of the end gate for the purposes hereinafter described. Pivotally secured to the dump platform is a pair of links 17 extending upwardly andhaving a roller 18 secured to their upper ends. Another pair of links 19 are connected at their lower ends to the fioor of the mine cage and extend in an upward direction, the said links 17 and 19 being secured together at their upper ends by a bolt 19 upon which the roller 18 is mounted. Secured to the floor 10 of the mine cage is a pair of upwardly extending curved guides 20, a pair of links 21 are secured at one of their ends to the dumping platform 11 and carry a pair of rollers 22 at their other ends, the 'saidrollers 22 con tacting with the guides 20. A curved guideway 23 is provided within which the roller 18 travels and which serves to dump the mine car in the manner hereinafter described.
Secured to an eye beam 24 in any approved manner is a link 25 having a pair of upper and lower rollers 26, 27 respectively mounted therein and between which an arm 28 is positioned, the said arm 28 extending through the link 25. Secured to the lower end of the arm 28 by means of bolts 28 is a pair of members 29 and 29*, the member 29 being bent upward at a right angle near its lower end and the member 29 being curved upward slightly above the end of the member 29 and is also bent laterally at a right angle. Secured to the lower end of the'members 29 and 29 by means of the members 29 is a member 29 which, with the lower end of the member 29 forms a hook for engagement with the finger 16 of the door 14:, as hereinafter described. Secured to the member 29 by means of a bolt 31 is a supporting arm 30 composed of a lower portion 30 and an upper portion 30. The upper portion 30 of the hinged arm 30 is pivotally secured at its upper end in any approved manner as by a fastening device 32 secured to a beam 33 by means of bolts 35, the member 32 having an eye portion 36 at its lower end through which a bolt 37 passes, thus holding the arm 30 in position. The upper portion 30 and the lower portion 30 of the arm 30 are connected together by a bolt 38 the two parts of the arm thus being hinged together and itwill be noted that the arm 30 is curved slightly at the hinge so that while normally it will sustain any pull, yet if in case of ping down too low. The arm 30 may be made up of sections, the said sections being secured together by bolts 40 and 41, if desired, so as to provide for different adjust- 1 ments of this arm.
As will be understood, the mine cage 10 is hoisted by the usual hoisting apparatus and as the cage is hoisted the roller 10 will engage with the base into the guideway as shown in the full line position of Fig. 1.. A continuation of the upward pull of the mine cage would cause the roller 18 to travel upward and over into the curved guideway 23 which will have the effect of tilting the dumping platform 11 to which the mine car 13 is secured. As the mine car reaches the point shown in the dotted line positions in Fig. 1 the member 29 on the endof the arm 28 will engage with the hook or finger 16 on the end gate of the mine car with the result that as the mine cage is pulled upward theroller 18 will travel over to the position shown in Fig. 2, the dumpingpplatform 11 will be tilted and the mine car as well, so that the coal is dumped out of the mine car. As the dumping platform 11 and the mine car are carried over to the position shown in Fig. 2 the arm 28 will travel'upward through the block 25 between the rollers 26 and 27 and thus the end gate 14 of the mine car will be opened and allow the coal to be dumped out of the car. In case the cage is raised too high by as overwind the arm 30 will breakat the hinge joint so that the upward movement of the apparatus will have no effect upon the end gate of the car which will disengage itself, thus allowing the end gate to drop down "into normal closed position without injury to the mine car. i 7 While I have described more or less pre cisely the details of construction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of partsand the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the'spirit or scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a door operating device for self dumping mine cars, the combination of an arm having a hook at its lower end, a link through which the said arm extends, means carried by the said arm whereby the same is suspended from the link and a support ing arm secured to the first mentioned arm near its lower end, and a pivotal mounting for said supporting arm.
2. In a door operating device for self dumping mine cars, the combination of an arm, a hook carried by the lower end of said arm for engagement with the door of a mine car, a link through which the said arm extends, means carried by the said arm whereby the same is suspended from the link, and a hinged supporting arm secured to the first mentioned arm near its lower end and a pivotal mounting for said supporting arm.
3. In a door operating device for self I dumping mine cars, the combination of an arm, means for-slidably mountlng the sald arm in operative relation with a dump cage,
a supporting arm secured to said first mentioned arm near its lower end and a pivotal mounting for said supp'ortlng arm.
4. In a 'door operating device for :self 7 dumping mine cars, the combination ofan arm, a hook for engagement with the door of a mine car, a link through which the said arm extends, a pin extending through the said arm whereby its downward movement is limited, and a pivotally mounted support-- ing 'arm secured to the first mentioned arm near its lower end.
5. In a door operating device for self arm, a link for supporting said lever, means in the upper end of the said arm to prevent the arm sliding through the link in one direction only, a supporting arm secured to the lower end of the first mentioned arm, a hinge for supporting the upper end of the said supporting arm, the supporting arm comprising separable parts hinged together.
