This invention relates to permutation looks and the objects are to provide a lock which consists of relatively few parts which may.
be cheaply manufactured, which cannot be opened except by manipulation of the combination dial, which is so constructed'that the various operating units are secured together, one by the other, and which may be readily dismantled and the combination changed without the use of tools or instruments and in which the new combination may be readily ascertained by the operator.

A spacing ring 14, preferably of spring metal, is positioned within the barrel, the ends of said spacing ring projecting into grooves 15 formed in the side walls of the barrel. This ring is adapted to bear against the rear side of tumbler disk 10. A second tumbler disk 16 isprovided which likewise has a bearing upon the sleeve 7. This tumbler is provided .with a circumferential series of apertures similar to those in disk 10 and has a pin 17 adapted to extend through one of said apertures and project from both side faces of the tumbler disk. A spacing ring similar to the one heretofore mentioned is mounted back of this second tumbler disk. A dial member 18 having a spindle 19 adapted to project through sleeve 7 of the barrel is proideo, this spindle having a removable crosspin 20 adjacent its free end through means of which it is secured in position in the barrel, the cross-pin bearing upon the inner edge of sleeve 7 and is adapted to actuate a third tumbler disk or dial tumbler 21 centered upon the dial spindle 19. This third tumbler disk or dial tumbler is provided with a central aperture and is recessed, as
. at 22, to take over the pin 20, being secured in'position in the barrel by means of spring washer 23. The outer face of the barrel 5 is formed with a horizontal recess 24, and in this recess are positioned a spring 25 and a small ball 26. The inner face of the dial member is provided with a circumferential series of recesses 27 adapted to cooperate with the spring-pressed ball to produce a clicking sound when the dial is rotated. The dial is provided with the usual radial marking lines upon the front face thereof and has a milled handle 28 of somewhat circular contour, one side being cut away, as at 29, in order to provide a flat portion by means of which the position of the dial relative to the barrel and body of the lock may be determined without the necessity of viewing the markings upon the dial.
,The upper inner wall of the chamber in the body portion is recessed, as indicated at 30, in order to provide a seating for the bolt member which consists of'the body portlon 31, a pivoted dog 32, and a tongue 33. The
bolt member 31 is provided with a spring strip 33 one end of which bears upon dog 32 to, press that member to'operative position with the notched tumbler disks. The barrel portion of the lock is providedfadjacent its open side 6 with a pin 34 which is adapted to cooperate with the pivoted dog 32 to prevent the bolt from being withdrawn until the, shackle in place in the lock body and the shackle has a reduced portion 38 adjacent the'shoulder portion, this flat reduced surface providing means whereby the shackle maybe turned, pulled upward, and disconnected from the lock body. The shackle is provided with theusual locking notch 39.
The outer side wallsof the barrel portion have vertical recesses 40, these recesses-being adapted to cotiperate with the recessed portions l of the body to provide a channel for the reception of the plug member 41, which fits tightly into and is frictionally held in the recess, and the leg end ofthe shackle, and it will be apparent that when these members have been inserted in the lock, that by reason of the provision of the recessed sides of the barrel member, the barrel and dlal will be'securely held 1n place within the lock and cannot be removed until the plug memher and shackle have been withdrawn.

If it is desired to dismantle the lock'to change the combination,the shackle member is then turned until the free end has swung away from the lock body, whereupon the shackle may be lifted out. A pin or other instrument may then be inserted into opening42 to force the plug member 41 from the body, whereupon the dial and barrel. members may be with drawn from the body of thelock. To change the combination, the spring washers 23 and ll are removed and the pins on the various tumbler disks maybe changed and fitted into any of'th'e different apertures. A lock comprising a body portion provided with a chamber for the reception of a tumbler barrel, a cylindrical barrel portion positioned in thechamber insaid body portion, a tumblerdisk formed with a plurality of circumferentially arranged holes therethrough and having a removable pin fitted into one of said holes and projecting from one face of the disk, a second tumbler disk formed with a plurality of circumferentially arranged holes therethrough and having a removable pin fitted into one of said holes and projecting from both faces of said disk, a third tumbler disk formed witha plurality of circumferentially arranged holes therethrough and'having a removable pin fitted into one of said holes and project ing from one face of said disk, said tumbler disks being mounted in the barrel portion, means for rotating the last-named tumbler disk whereby the pin projecting from said disk will engage the pin projecting from one face of the second-named tumbler disk to turn said disks into operative relation one to the other, a bolt member positioned in said body portion, and means whereby when the tumbler disks have been turned to assume a predetermined relation, the bolt is withdrawn.

In a lock, a body portion consisting of a block of metal-having a centrally drilled chamber in its front face, a pair of vertical apertures in the upper face of said block, said apertures communicating with the central chamber and assuming in adjacency thereto the form of recesses, a cylindrical barrel having a cut-away portion in its upper side face positioned in said chamber, said barrel portion being formed with vertical recesses in its outer side walls, a shackle having its ends normally positioned in the apertures of said boclyportion,tumbler disks mounted in said barrel portion, means to actuate said tumbler disks, a sliding bolt positioned in said body portion and adapted I under actuation of said tumbler disks to engage one end of said shackle, a plug member positioned in one of said recesses in the chamber of the body portion, said plug and one end of said shackle cooperating with the recessed portions of said chamber and the recessed sides of said barrel to retain the barrel in position in the body portion.
