e it known that I, ALEX KING, a cltlzen of the United States, residing at Richmond,
secured thereto a graduated container 12 in the county of Madison and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Measures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to measuring devices, and has for an object the provision of a device whichmay be connected to a pump of any character for the purpose of measuring liquid delivered by the pump.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a measuring device, by means of which the quantity of liquid passing through the same may be plainly seen (the device being especially designed for use in gasolene filling stations), so that a purchaser may easily determine the quantity of fuel being placed in the tank of an automobile.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character, which is exceedingly simple in construction and operation, consisting of only a few parts, so that it will not easily get out of order.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a sectional view of the invention, with the valve in normal position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the valve in the position it occupies when the device is in use.
Referring to the drawings in detail, where in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts,the invention comprises a casing 10, one end of which is provided with an inlet port 11. The device is designed to be secured to a pump, so't-hat liquid delivered by the pump will pass through the inlet port 11 into the casing 10.
The opposite end of the casing 10 has which is formed of transparent material, such as glass and is provided with graduations 13 for the purpose of indicating the quantity of liquid within the containerQ The casing 10 is provided with a partition 14. so as to form a valve chamber 15 and a by-pass or fluid passage 16, the latter com'-' municating at one end with the valve chamber 15 through a port 17, and at its opposite end the passage 16 is provided with a port 18 for the passage of liquid into the container 12.
Slidably mounted within the valve chamber 15, is a valve 19, the latter being adapted to close the ports 11 and 17, and when in such position will permit free passage of liquid which may be contained within the container 12 through an outlet port 20, whlch may be connected to a hose 21 for the purpose of delivering the liquid to the fuel tank of an automobile. When the valve 19 is in 'this position, it rests upon lugs or similar stops 22.
' In the use of the invention, the liquid forcing through the inlet port 11 by means of suitable pump mechanism, will raise the valve 19 to open the port and to establish communication between this port and the passage 16 through the port 17, the liquid being forced upward with sufficient pressure for this purpose. As soon as the port 17 is uncovered, the liquid will flow through the pipes 16, the force of the rising of the liquid being just sufficient to maintain the valve in this position. When the desired quantity of liquid has passed upward through 'the port 18 into the container, the operation of the pump is stopped, whereupon the valve will -drop upon the lugs or stop 22 and will open the port 20, so that the liquid from the container 12 will pass through the pipe 21. The ports are so proportioned and the operation of the device so regulated, that just the proper amount of liquid will remain above the level of the port 20, to insure accurate measurement.
It is preferred to employ in connection with the outlet port, a valve 23 which is located in the pipe 21 for the purpose of preventing the outflow of the liquid, if for any reason it is desired that the same be retained in the container 12; It is also preferred to provide the container at the upper end thereof with an air valve or vent '24, which may be openedto permit the liquid to flow quickly from the container. Also,
a screen 25 may be located at the entrance of the inlet port 11, so as to filter the liquid passing through the measure.
' The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly ,fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, What is claimed is:
A measuring device comprising a casing, an inlet port for said casing, a graduated container communicating With the casing, an outlet port for the casing located between the inlet port and the container, a fluid passage Within the casing, a valve chamber 1 ,scogrc 1 fluid passage and capable of being moved to a position to close the outlet port under pressure of the liquid passing through the casing.
