SVEND HANSEN, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A SSIGNOR T0 BIRMINGHAM IRON FOUNDRY, OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
QUICK RELEASE r03. BRAKE-BANDS.
Specification of Letters latent. Patented 'NOV. 30, 1920.
Application filed March 25, 1919. Serial No. 284,950.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, SVEND HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Quick Releases for Brake- Bands; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with theaccompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a broken side view of my improved quick-release for brake-bands, showing the band in engagement with a drum.
Fig. 2 an end view of the releasing mechanism.
Fig. 3 an enlarged side view of the releas ing mechanism in the closedposition.
Fig. l a similar view in the open position.
Thisinvention relates to an improvement in quick releasing mechanism for use in connection with brake-bands particularly applied to winding or drawing drums. In drums for winding various material such, for instance, as thin rolled metal, the brakehand is applied to the drum so as to regulate the speed at which the drum shall run. This brake consists of a band suitablylined and fixed at one point and connected to a nut mounted on a rotatable shaft which may be operated from any convenient point so that by drawing the nut inward, the'strap will be drawn against the drum so as to apply friction thereto, or if movedin the opposite direction, will release the band, and reduce the friction. It is sometimes desirable to be able to quickly release the band,
and the object of this invention is to provide a latch in connection with the band whereby the tension on the band may be immediately released without adjusting the nut; and the invent-ion consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I show a brake-band 5 provided with a suitable lining 6' and extending over a drum or roller 7 into engagement with a loop 8. The lower end of this loop is pivotally connected with the sides of a latch 9 which in turn is piv oted to a nut 10 mounted ona shaft 11 which extends to any desired point where it may be provided with a hand wheel 12 by which the shaft may be turned. As herein shown, the shaft is supported in bearings 13, and in the shaft are universal couplings 14 which may be employed or not as occasion requires. The latch 9 is provided'with a handle 15, and the nut is providedwith a stop-pin 16 against which the latch will rest when it is turned into the locked position at which time the latch stands directly in line with the loop 8. lVhen the latch 9 is turned down as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, the latch is in line with the loop, and the length of the brake-hand is such that it will have slight bearing on the drum. If more tension is desired, the shaft will be turned to cause the nut to travel inward which will draw the brake-band with greater force against the drum. Should, however, it be desirable to quickly release the band, it is only necessary to trip the latch, as shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings, which immediately releases the tension of the brake-band on the drum.
1. The combination with a brake-band, of a loop connected with one end thereof, a latch with which the loop is pivotally connected, and arelatively fixed member with which the latch is pivoted.
2. The combination with a brake-band fixed at one end and connected with a loop at the opposite end, a traveling nut, a latch pivotally connected with said nut, said loop being pivotallyvconnected with the sides of the latch.
, 3. The combination with a drum, of a brake-band extending over said drum one end of the band connected with a fixed point, and the other end connected with a loop, a shaft, a nut mounted on said shaft, a latch pivotally connected with said nut, the said loop pivotally connected with the sides of the said latch whereby when the latch is turned downward it will draw the loop downward and shorten the band.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SVEND HANSEN.
