f ,f WITNESSES $27 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. I-IOGEN, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Application led July 17,
To @ZZ 'Lo/tom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. HoGnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Couplings, of which the following is a specilication.
The invention relates to couplers, and has for its primary objects; the provision of a coupler adapted for useV in coupling to cars having couplers at various heights; the provision of an improved arrangement of buffing rollers; the provision of a construction in which the parts may be easily assembled; and in general the simplification and improvement of coupler mechanism. Certain embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure l is a plan view of one form of the apparatus, Fig. 2 is a section on the line ill-Il of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a tace view oi' the apparatus oi' Fig. 1 with the carriage and parts carried thereby removed, Fig. et is a transverse section through a modified form oi apparatus, and Fig. is a plan view of the carriage shown in section in Fig. L1.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 1 is the end of the car upon whichis mounted the transversely extending head 2. This head, as indicated in Figs. `2 and 3, is hollow and provided with the outwardly curved slot 3 extending substantially throughout its length, correspondinglycurved overhanging lips L1 and 5 being provided above and below the slot.
Mounted in the head for transverse movement along the arc of the curved slot is the carriage 6. This carriage consists of a hollow casting provided at its front end with the three coupler pockets 7, 8 and 9 having alined perforations to receive a coupling pin. T his arrangement permits of the use of the apparatus with cars having their couplers at varying heights.
Mounted in the carriage in front of the lips 4C and 5 are the butling wheels 10 and 11 on each side of the vertical center line of the carriage, such wheels being arranged in pairs with one pair lying above the slot in the head and the other pair lying below such slot. Similarly mounted to the rear of the lips 4 Specification of Letterselatent.`

and 5' are the pairs of wheels 12 and 18. Jihese wheels are secured in the carriage by means of the headed pins 14, a groove or runway being provided in theupper surface of the head pocket to receive such heads. The pins are inserted through the perforations 15 shown in Fig. 1.
The apparatus as above described is simple, can be cheaply constructed, and easily assembled. The coupler can be used to couple at varying heights, and the bu'l'ling and pull ing strains imposed upon the device are well taken care of by the sets of rollers or wheels arranged inside and outside the overhanging lips 4 and 5. The pockets 7, S and 9 can be used with the usual coupling link 16 as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Figs. et and 5 illustrate a modification in which the head 2 is substantially the same as in the other type of apparatus, but checarriage 17 is of a different type, the iront end thereof terminating liush with the faces of the bearing lips 18 and 19. The carriage is hollow and is provided with a headless coupling pin 20. is indicated in Fig. 4 the space between the upper and lower walls of the carriageis such that the coupling link 21 can be tilted up or down a considerable distance thus permitting coupling with other coupling devices lying above or below that illustrated. The carriage is provided with two sets or rollers or wheels 22 and 23 engaging the rear sides o1 the lips 18 and 19, the rollers being held in position by means of headed pins 24; corresponding to those einployed in the other type of apparat-us.
Vf hat I claim is:
ln combination, a hollow transversely extending iead slotted along its front side and provided with opposing overhanging lips spaced apart, a carriage lying inside the head and provided upon its upper and lower sides With wheels engaging the said lips, a headed bearing pin passing through the carriage and the upper and lower wheels, and acoupler pocket on the carriage `projecting torwardly, the upper wall ci the interior oi the head being grooved to receive the vhead of said bearing pin.
