Description

portions of other subs sin err err ROY LINDEN BILL, OF TAIVIAQUA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, TO ATLAS POWDER COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DEL-AVTARE, A CGRPORATION OF DELAWARE.
EXPLOSIVE MIXTURE.
No Drawing. Application filed. August 30, 1918, Serial No. 252,028. Renewed October 8, 1920.
Patented Nov. 30, 192$.
Serial 1 '0 all whom it may con cern Be it known tha 1, H01 LINDEN HILL, a citizen of th United States, resi ring at Tamaqua, in'the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Explosive Mixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relat 1. to a non-freezing, high strength explosive mixture. I have discovered that a particularly efiicient mixture of very high explosive strength is that containing ammonium perchlorate and nitro starch in the correct proportions for perfect combustion.
l have also found that ot 1er proportions of ammonium perchlorate and nitro-starch may be used, and that many other substances may be added, either to decrease the explosive strength of the mixture where a lower strength xolosive is desired, to obtain desired densities, or to obtain varied rates of detonation, or varied sensitiveness, or for other purposes.
' It should be understood that I do not claim as my invention mixtures. of ammonium perchlorate wi h substances other than nitrostarch, but that I do claim broadly mixtures of ammonium perchlorate and intro-starch in varying proportions, as the essential constituents of my new explosive'rnixtures and I propose to combine with my essential ingredients varying; pro
ces added to produce explosive mixtures charecteristically different, sub tially as descr b The i'ioregoingsei-eralsubsidiary features any or may not be employed and therefore this plication wi l be devoted to the pat enting of the compound consisting of ammonium perchlorate and intro-starch irre spective of what subsidiary features may be resorted to in conjunction therewith,
these subsidiary features being made the subject of a separate application of even date herewith, 1t beingapparent that the mixture of ammonium perchlorate and nitro-starch is of utility. and advantage whether any other ingredients are incorporated or not. One composition thatl have found to give excellent results. consists of the followingingredients combined in substantially the proportions stated, viz:
rimmonium perchlorate (water F or the compound or mixture of compounds containing a metal or metals whlch will readily combine with chlorin l have used such substances as sodium nitrate and man Mnese dloxid,
rmyhig thus clearly described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. An explosive mixture consisting essentially of ammonium perchlorate and nitrostarch. Y
2. An explosive mixture consisting of the following ingredients combined in. substantially the proportions stated Ammonium perchloratm 45 to Nitro-starch 35 to I 3. The new and. useful composition of matter, suitable for use an explosive, con sisting of ammo im perchlorate and nitronortions that practically starch in such 1 L complete eombustmn will result on explosion.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
