To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN CUTHBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,'in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements" in PaneLBoards, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in panel boards for electric distribution cirwits and has especial reference to sectional composite boards of this character, to be made up'ofa plurality-of like sections or :units; to the arrangement of the parts and to the character of the units.
My present invention is similar in many respects to that disclosed in my copending application for panel boards filed October 12th, 1915, and identified by Serial Number acter.
-'One of the objects of this invention is to generally improve structures of this char- Another and more specific object is the provision of atwo circuit unit, preferably for) three 2 wire distribution systems, in whicheach circuit is provided-with a cut out or fuse in each leg andwherein the fuse plug receptacles are located between respective bus bars.
'-;Another object being the Provision of a panel board unit in which the circuit wires of a branch circuit are each connected to the J central terminal contact of the fuse receptables, thus contracting the size of the unit without decreasing the insulation surfaces. Another object of my invention is the provision of terminal units for a series of my I 'branch circuit. units whereby two or more parallel series of assembled units may be connected direct to the terminals of a supply circuit.
" Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the followingv description taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of two assembled I series'of units showing a terminal section for connecting a double parallel series of branch circuit units to the mains of a current supply circuit.

In allthe views the same reference characters are employed to indicate similar parts.
In the illustrative embodiments I have shown two parallel series of branch circuit cut-out units connected to the terminals of a supply circuit by a single terminal unit, all of which are suitably mounted upon a suitable backing or base plate of the panel of which they constitute a part. The branch circuit cut out units 10' and 11 constitute the first units of the respective series succeeded by similar units 10 and 11, respectively, and as many more of a similar character as may be desired to be located in the respective panels. The units 10 and 11 are similar in every respect and do not differ in any manner from the units 10 and 11 respectively. The branch circuit units 10 and 11 are shown with their covers 12 in place and with their fuse plugs 13 screwed into the respective receptacles.
Each oithe branch circuit units is composed of a porcelain block 14, preferably tral terminal connector 52.
a cover of insulating material 12, perforated as at 28, to register with the depressions in which the shells 22 are contained. The covers 12 extend over the entire face of the porcelain block 14 and completely cover and protect all of the conducting parts of the unit from contact or from the effect of dirt, dust or moisture.
The units are mounted upon a base 29, of sheet steel, or other similar material, and held in place by screws 30 which pass through the legs 15 of the blocks and are located in counter-sunk depressions in the face of the block immediately above the legs.
When a single series of branch circuit units are to be used, as the series 10 for instance, a single terminal block 32 may be employed, the bus bars 20 and 26 being given a half twist, as clearly shown in the drawings, for the accommodation of the binding screws 33 and 34 to which the terminals of the supply circuit may be directly connected. If two parallel series of units are to be used in a single panel I prefer to employ the double terminal unit or block 35 which is provided with three terminals 36, 37 and 38 that may be connected to the respective terminals of the supply circuit. Terminal 36 is connected to the bus bar +26 on the left, by means of bars 39 and 40 and the same arrangement is shown on the right hand side with reference to the 26 bus bar associated with the unit 11 wherein the terminal 38 is connected to the bus bar 26 by the bars 39 and 40. 1 The bus bars 20 are connected together .by a bar 41 which in turn is con nected to the terminal 37. The inner bus bar 26 of the unit 10 is connected to the terminal 38, by means of the bars 42 and 43 while the inner bus bar +26 of the unit 11 is connected to the bus bar 36 by the bars 44 and 45. An insulating strip 46 is contained between the bars 43 and 45.
The connecting wires 50 and 51 constitute the legs of the branch circuits that areto be connected to the units by means of the cen- The wire 50 of a branch circuit enters perforations 53, provided in the porcelain block of the unit, and is connected to central terminal connector The wire 51 is similarly-connected to another receptacle. The wires may pass to the inside terminals under the block through the spaces provided by the legs 15 and 16.
The central terminal connector 52 forms subject matter for a copending application in Which it is specifically claimed and for this reason will not be more specifically described herein, said application having been filed by me on the 4th day of June, 1915, and identified by Serial No.- 35,064.
The single series terminal units 32 are each inclosed by an insulating cover 56 and the double terminal unit, or block 35, is inclosed by a cover 57 thereby protecting all of the metallic parts of my panel from contact and from contaminating influences or injurious matter, such as dust, moisture or the like.
The covers of the branch circuit units may carry circuit identifying indications 6061 visible through openings 62 and 63 respectively;
While I have herein shown a single embodiment of my invention for the purpose of a clear disclosure it is manifest that changes may be made in the relative dimensions, configuration and arrangement of the parts within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is: I
1. A branch circuit unit comprising two associate fuse plug receptacles; a base upon which said receptacles are mounted, having wire receiving openings, at one side of the axes thereof communicating with the interior of the respective receptacles through which to pass a wire and a wire clamping screw within each ieceptacle the head of which constitutes the central contact terminals of the receptacles,
2. A branch circuit panel comprising a plurality of series of like branch double circuit units connected to bus bars in common; a terminal unit for each said series, and another terminal unit for connecting two such parallel series of units to current Supply terminals and the respective bus bars of eaz'h unit together.
3. ii panel-comprising a series of branch double circuit units connected in parallel to a series of bus bars; anothersimilar panel, connected parallel with the first panel; separable covers of insulating material extending entirely over each unit and to near the bottom thereof at adjacent edges whereby adjacent parallel bus bars of the respective panels are separated by the walls of two adjacent covers.
4. A panel comprising a series of branch circuit units connected in parallel to a series of bus bar's; another series of similar units constituting a panel connected to another set of bus bars, parallel with the first panel; covers of insulating material overlying the entire face of each unit and extending near the bottom thereof at adjacent edges whereby adjacent parallel bus bars are separated by the side walls of two adjacent covers; and a common terminal unit for said panels and a cover inclosingsaid terminal unit.
5. A branch circuit unit of the character described comprising a rectangular block of insulating material, substantially square in plan, having a central bar-receiving groove and parallel rabbets on the respective sides,
