NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
Application filed February 20, 1920. Serial No. 360,224.
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED E. CAssnLLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nut locks and consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the pre ferred form whereof will be hereinafter clearly set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The principal object of my invention, among others is to provide a locking device for holding a nut upon its bolt whereby casual movement of the nut will be impossible.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple, though reliably eflicient construction whereby the nut may be readily released from engagement with the bolt and thereby removed from the end of same.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention showing the bolt broken away, and
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my invention.
By referring to the drawings by numerals it will be seen that 1 designates a bolt having the threaded end 2. This threaded end 2 is provided with a series of spaced apart longitudinally disposed grooves 3 and it will be noted that the grooves 3 are formed so as to have a flat side and a straight side.
The nut l is provided with a cut out portion 5 wherein is situated the pawl 6. The pawl 6 is pivoted intermediate its ends so as to be mounted within the cut out portion 5 by means of the pin 7 and has a lug 8 at one end and a reduced portion 9 at its other end. An auxiliary pawl 10 is pivoted to the reduced portion 9 by the pin 11 at one end and is provided at its other end with a lug 12 adapted to engage the notch 13 provided in the side wall of the cut out portion 5 so that the auxiliary pawl may be sprung in and out of engagement with the notch 13.
By referring especially to Fig. 2 of the drawing it will be seen that when the lug 8 is in one of the grooves 3 the lug 12 is in the notch 13 and therefore it will be impossible for the nut 1 to rotate upon the bolt. To disengage the lug S from the groove 3 all that is necessary is to bring the pawl 10 out of engagement with the notch 13 by means of any suitable instrument, there being practically no chance of an accidental displacement.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new is 2- 1. In a nut lock, the combination with a bolt having a plurality of longitudinally disposed grooves on its threaded end, of a bolt adapted to fit said threaded end and having a cutout portion and having one of its side walls disposed in alinement with a cord through said bolt and provided with a notch, a pawl pivotally mounted intermedi ate its ends within said cutout portion and provided with a lug at one end adapted to engage said grooves, and a reducedportion at its other end, an auxiliary pawl pivotally mounted on said reduced end and provided with a lug adapted to engage the notch provided in the side wall of said outout portion.
2. In a nut lock, the combination with a bolt having a plurality of longitudinally disposed grooves at its threaded end. of a nut adapted to fit said threaded end and having a cut out portion, a pawl pivotally mounted within said out out portion so as to be pivoted intermediate its ends, and pro vided with a lug at one end adapted to en gage said grooves and a reduced portion at its. other end, an auxiliary pawl pivot-ally mounted to said reduced end and provided with a lug adapted to engage the notch provided in the Wall of said out out portion for holding said first mentioned pawl in a 5 locked position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED E. CASSELLS.
