APPARATUS FOR MAKING CAN-ICE.
To allwhmn it ma'y concern:- Be it known that I GEORGE L. REUscH- LINE, a citizen of the llnited States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have lnvented certain new and useful Apparatus for Making Can-Ice, of which the following is a s'pecification.
My invention relates to ice making apparatus, and more particularly such as may be employed for making can ice.
My invention resides in apparatus of the character referred to comprising a traveling carriage or crane movable with respect to a freezing ,tank in which the cans are disposed, and carrying a tank or reservoir, preferably divided into compartments, containing the water to be frozen and delivered into the cans from the tank or reservoir.
My inventlonresides also n apparatus for hoisting a can containing ice from a freezing tank, transferring it to a thawing or dip tank, and for thereafter placing the can upon a dump board and tilting the board with the can thereon to position for removingthe ice fromthe can.
My invention resides also in a hook structure whereby a can may be hoisted and trans ported. L
- My invention resides in apparatus of the character hereinafter described and claimed. For an illustration of one of the various forms my invention may take, reference is to be had in the accompanying drawing, in
which the apparatus of Fig. 1, partly in vertical section.

' Disposed above the crane is the water sup ply p1pe9, controlled by valve 10, and hav only one such outlet and hose are shown.
Preferably the operating handles of all the valves 13 are simultaneously operated by any suitable means.
In the freezing tank F containing brine solution 7 are a plurality of banks of freezing pipes 15 disposed upon suitable racks 15, between which racks the cans B are disposed. Through the pipes 15 is circulated any suitable refrigerating medium for lowering the temperature within the tank F to such point that the water within the cans B beam or girder 23 comprising the channelirons 24, Fig. 2, between which the sheaves 21 are disposed. The sheaves 22 are secured upon shafts 25 journaled upon the crane beams 1, 1.
Supported upon the girder 23 by members 26 is the transversely extending horililti can hooks 28.
These hooks may be formed of spring steel rods formed to the structure illustrated in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive. Each hook is made of a single piece of rod having the vertically extending members 29 having the outwardly extending ends 30. At its upper end each member 29 is bent over to form a hook 31 which continues in the return bend 32 lying side by side with the portion 31; the return bends are joined by the transversely extending horizontal member 33.
The outwardly extending ends are adapted o be sprung into holes 34 in opposite sides of a can B, while the hook portions 31, 32 hookupon the aforementioned rod 27, whereby a can may be suspended upon the aforementioned hoisting mechanism driven by the hoisting motor Carried by the crane is a third electric motor M driving the Worm 35, Fig. 3, meshing with and driving the gear 36, which in turn drives the pinion 37, which drives the gear 38 secured upon the shaft 39 upon which are secured a plurality of chain wheels or pulleys 40. Engaging each wheel 40 is a chain 41, which passes over the idler chain wheel 42. One end of each of the chains 41 is attached at 43 to one edge or side of the dumping board or frame 44, to whose other edge or side at 45 is attached the other end of the chain 41. At one edge of the board 44 is the rail or rest 46 extending longitudinally of the frame 44, and at its other edge is asimilar ledge or rail 47, preferably of less height than the member 46.
Extending parallel with the freezing tank F is a dip tank or thawing tank D containing warm water. Preferably adjacent the dip tank is the inclined chute or ice slide E adjacent the platform 48.
The operation is as follows:
When the water within the cans B in tank F has been frozen, the covers 17 are removed, the can hooks inserted in the holes 34 and the motor M set into operation to actuate the hoisting mechanism, whereby the rod 27 upon which the can hooks engage is raised, lifting'thecans filled with ice out of the freezing tank F'to a position similar to that indicatedtin Fig. 2. Thereupon the motor M is energized and the crane moved longitudinally of the rails 4 until the cans B are suspended directly above the dip tank D,
' whereupon they are lowered into the same and the warm water therein contacting the outside of each of the cans thaws the ice loose from the can. The cans are then again hoisted by the motor M to a position similar to that indicated in Fig. 2. Thereupon the motor M is energized, moving the chain 41 and the interconnected dump board 44 to position such that the bottom of each can restsagainst the member 46 on the board 44; the movement of the chain is continued, in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 3, until the cans are lying upon their sides upon the board 44, as indicated in Fig. 3, the bottom of each can being slightly elevated, whereupon the ice slides out from the can and down the ice slide E to the receiving platform 48, from which it is then removed. Thereupon the motor M is reversed and the cans and board 44 brought back to a position such as indicated in Fig. 2, whereupon the motor M is energized and the crane moves the cans to position above the freezing tank. The cans are then lowered and guided into the spaces between the racks for the pipes 15. The cans will, however, float because the tank F contains brine solution; thereupon the hose 14 are lowered. one inserted in each can and the valves 13 operated, whereupon water from the compartments in the tank A flows into the cans and they gradually settle, finally taking the position indicated in Fig. 1. Thereupon the can hooks are removed and the covers 17 replaced.
The crane may then be moved to position directly beneath the pipe 9, whereupon the valve 10 is opened and the compartments in the tank A again filled.
What I claim is:
1. Ice making apparatus comprising the combination with an ice can, of means for freezing water in said can, means for suspending said can, a dump board, and means for actuating the dump board to receive the can thereon.
2. Ice making apparatus comprising the combination with an ice can, of means for freezing water in said can, means for suspending said can, a flexibly suspended dump board, and means for actuating said dump board to engage said can and move the same to inclined position.
3. Ice making apparatus comprising the combination with an icecan, of means for freezing water in said can, means for suspending said can, a dump board, projections on opposite sides thereof between which said can is received, and means for moving said dump board to engage said can, and move the same to position for removal of ice therefrom.
4. Ice making apparatus comprising. the combination with an ice can, of means for freezing water in said can, means for suspending said can, a flexibly suspended dump board for receiving said can with its side in engagement with said board, and means for actuating said board to engage said can v and move the same to position in which the. side of said can is inclined.
5. Ice making apparatus comprising the combination with an ice'can, of means for freezing water in said can, a dump board normally in vertical position for receiving said can with its side against said board,
a chain connected to opposite sides of said board, and means for actuating said chain.

19. Apparatus for making can ice comprising a freezing tank, a series of cans.
therein, a traveling carriage, means thereon for hoisting said cans from said tank, dumping structure flexibly suspended from said carriage for receiving'said cans with their sides in engagement with said structure, and means for moving said dumping structure and said cans to position for delivering ice from said cans.

Apparatus for making can ice comprising a freezing tank, a dip tank, a receiving platform, a traveling carriage, means thereon for hoisting said cans from and lowering them intosaid tanks, dumping structure carried by said'carriage and adapted to receive said cans, and means for tilting said structure with the cans thereon to position to deliver ice to said receiving platform.
21. Apparatus for making can ice comprising a freezing tank, a series of cans therein, a traveling carriage, a Water tank on said carriage, said tank having compartments for each of said cans and means for delivering water from each compartment to its corresponding can, and means on said carriage for raising and lowering said cans from and into said freezing tank.
22. Apparatus for making can ice comprising a freezing tank, a can therein, a dip tank, a receiving platform, a traveling carriage, means on said carriage for raisin and lowering said can from and into said treezing tank and said dip tank, a dump board carried by said carriage, said dump board normally in vertical position adjacent said can in raised position, and means for tilting said dump board to engage said can and tilt the same to position for the removal ofice.
