Description
U I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WELLBY, OF FREDERIGKTON, CANADA.
IMPROV EMENT IN RAILWAY-DUST PREVENTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,013, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WELLBY, of Frederickton, in the county of York, in tlie Prov.- inceof New Brunswick and Dominion of (Janada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railway-Dust Preventer, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view'of a car to which myimprovement has been applied. Fig.
A represents the car-body; B, the end plat-' form; (J, the steps; D, the railings; and E, the
brake-shaft; about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. F is a frame, made with close triangular ends f, and which is designed to be securedto the lower part'of the car body A, and which should project downward so as to be as close to the ground as practicable. To the upper parts of the ends of the frame F are pivoted the journals of a roller, G. To the roller Gis attached one edge of a canvas screen, H, the lower edge of which, when unrolled, is designed to be secured to the lower bar of the frame F, so that by detaching the lower edge of the screen or blind H it may be rolled upon the roller G to giveconvenient access to the wheels when desired. The roller G may be turned to roll and unroll the blind H by means of a handle or crank, I, permanently or detachably attached to the end of one of the journals of the said roller G. The roller G and screen H should be detachable, so that they may be readily attached to the frame F of any carriage. J are the end screens, which consist of a frame covered permanently with a cover of wood or thin sheetiron. The ends of the screens J are made close and triangular, and their inner edges fit closely to the inner edges of'the close triangular ends of the frames oft-he side screens, as shown in Fig. l. The brake-shafts E pass down through holes in the end screens J, as shown in Fig. 1.
The end screens J should project so that the end screens of adjacent cars may come as near each other as practicable without danger of being broken.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A triangular frame, F, provided with roller to receive flexible screen, and applied as and for the purpose described. A
JOHN WELLBY. Witnesses:
B. R. PLANT, HENRY B. RAINSFORD.
