The principal object ofthe invention is,
to provide a starting and stopping mechanism for phonographs which shall be simple and inexpensive in construetioln strong, durable and ellicient in operation, with its parts so made and arranged that they can be readily applied to Edison phonographs or the diamond disk type without any material alterations in the construction thereof, and in such a manner that starting and stopping the operation of the instrument may be effected by lowering and raising respectively, the reproduoer onto or from the recreation dish or record. 1

Pivotally andhorizontally mounted on a pivot 14 seated in the platform 11 outwardly from the opening 13 therein is the brake-shoe carrying member which coinprises a bell canlr lever15 the outwardly extended arm 16 of which is provided at its free end with a holder 17 for a plug 18 of felt or other suitable material which holder and plug extend outwardly from the arm 16 and constitute the brake-shoe of said member. The other or inwardly extended arm 1901? the bell lever has at its end opposite the pivot 14 an extension 20 depending through the opening 13, and provided at its lower end with a horizontally disposed and outwardly directed arm 21 to theiree end of which is hinged one end of a member 22, which is normally held in alinement with the member 21 by means of a spring 23 secured at its inner end to the member 21. The adjacent ends oi? the members 21 and 22 are constructedin any suitable manner to prevent the member 22 dropping yet so as to permit its upward movement against the spring 23 when the arm 4L1 of the operating bell crank lever contacts with the shoe 24; of the member 22. The outer end of the member 22 is provided with a foot 2% disposed at an angle thereto and. substantially in parallelism with the arm 16 of the bell cranklever. The arm 16 of said lever is provided with a depending projection 25 which is located at the juncture of said arm with the holder 17 and is preferably angular in shape as shown in Figs. land l of the drawing.

The arm 27 is located. below the bell crank lever and'normallyin such a position that the lever 36'wil1occupy a position substantially in parallelismwiththe arm 19 of the bell'cr ank'lever as will be readily understood by reference toliig. 2 of the drawing, in which view it will be seen that the foot or flange 37 of the lever 36 is located near and in the path of one of the arms of the bell crank operating lever which is designated as a whole by the numeral. 38 and is mounted on the rod or shaft'39 just below theplatform 11 which rod or shaft is used forraising, lowering and adjusting the position of the reproducer and connected to the latter for this purpose in the ordinary or well known way. The operating bell crank lever 38 comprises a tripping arm 40 which is'by preference inwardly curved as shown, and a longer arm 41 which is also extended inwardly but at angle to the V shorter arm. fThese arms are fitted on a tube 42 which surrounds the post 39 and may be fixed thereto by means of a set screw 4:3

The. free end of the arm 40 is provided with an. enlargement 4d the upper surface ofwhich is downwardly beveled or inclined it has been started, the parts of the mechanism will occupy about the positions shown byfl'dottedlines in Fig. 2 of the drawing, from which it will be'seen thatthe plpg of the brake-shoe will be in contact with the inner surface of the flange 12 of the turn-table, and it will be understood that the arms 40 and of the operating bell crank lever 38 will be in contact with the flange or foot 37 of the lever 36 and with the shoe 2% of the member 22 respectively. The parts of the bell crank lever 15 and 01 the locking and releasing member will be held in about the positions thereof shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 by means of the spring 4E6 which connects the arm 19 of said lever to the member 30 of the locking and releasing member and by reason of the engagement of the projection 25 on the arm 16 with the outer end of the opening 31 in the member 30.
To release or start the instrument, it is only necessary to turn the handle *1? which is pivoted to the upper portion of the shaft 39 from the dotted line position thereof shown in Fig.1 of the drawing. to the vertical position shown in said figure when it will be understood that the reproducer will be lowered so that the diamond will rest on the disk or record. This operation will also cause slight upward movement of the operating bell crank lever 38 and its arms, to the end that the beveled portion 45 of the arm 41 co-acting with the foot 24 on the hinged member 22 will cause said member to be raised against the tension of they spring 23 when by a slight rotary movement of the shaft 39 in the proper direction, the levers or the members 21 and 36 will be moved inwardly, thus permitting the projection 25 to engage the shoulder 32 of the opening 31 in the member 30 of the locking and releasing member. hen in this position, the plug 18 of the brake shoe will be held out of contact with the flange 12 of the turn table, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus permit rotation of said table and the operation of the instrument.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the class described, the co1nbination with the platform of a phonograph having a vertical opening therein, of a turn table rotatably mounted above the platform and having a downwardly extended peripheral flange, a reproducer adjusting shaft vertically journaled in the platform externallyv of the turn table, means on said shaft to raise, lower and turn the same, a locking and releasing member pivotally mounted on the platform and carrying below the same a lever extended toward said shaft and provided with an angularly disposed foot, said member having in its portion above the platform an opening provided with a shoulder in one of its walls, a bell crank lever pivotally mounted on the platform and carrying below the same a horizontally disposed spring-actuated outwardly directed member having at its free end an angularly disposed foot, one of the arms of the bell crank lever having an out Wardly extended brake shoe, saidarm of said lever also having a projection located in the aforesaid shouldered opening, a spring uniting the other arm of said lever to said member, a bell crank operating lever mounted on said shaft below the platform, 10
