"PATE Arsv VALVE DEVICE FOR ACETYLENE-LAMPS AND THE LIKE. I
vApplication l'ey June, 1Q, 1918. Serial' No. 239,171.
To all fwiomz't may concern.' n
Be itknown that I, GEORGE R. SHANKLIN, a citizen of thegUnited States, residing at Springfielchin the'county of Sangainon and State of Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Valve Devices for Acetylene-Lamps and the like, of which the following is a description'.
My invention belongs to that general class of' devices provided with valves which are particularly designed'to control therflew or feed of the fluid tothecaleium carbid, or its equivalent. tion of av simple, durable and efectivedev-ice for the purpose described that isv not likely to clog up and that can be readily freed from any spent carbid or other matter that may adhere thereto. To this end, my in.- vention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination'of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims. y
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters `indicate like or corresponding parts,
V,Figure 1 is a central vertical section" through anV acetylene .lamp of the cla-ssy known as miners. lamps;
F ig. 2 is la similar section of the lower portion of the iiuid tube and valve, enlarged; y
' Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 5 -5 of Fig. 2,;y
Fig.y l is a similar section `on line 6-6 of Fio. 2; Fig. 5 isa 2, .showing a modification f Fig. 6 is av transverse section on .line 3 -3 of Fig. 5. f v
In the drawings, 1 represents the water chamber and 2y the 'carbid chamber of a'lamp of the kind described, the two beingcon-Y nected at 3 by the usual screw threaded construction.' 4 is filling opening in the water chamber, and 5 is a cap therefor. The gas generated in the chamber 2 is conducted to and escapes through' the tube 6, which when in use is provided with Vthe usual gas tip, and a reflector if desired. 4
7 is the-water tube carried by the water chamber and extending downward therethrough and well into the carbid chamber,
so as to be positioned in the carbid when in f use. The lower end of the water tube 7 is formed with a valve seat 8. Rotatably secured to the lower end of the water tube 7 is It hasfor itsl object the'producsectional view similarrto Fig..
if @me f i Specification of Letters Patent. Patntd'NoV.' 23, i Y
the sleeve 9, which, vin the forni. shown, is at its upper' end bent inward. as atl() to ,engage a,v circumferential groove or indentation 11 formedin theftube 7 for thatrpur-pose..
12. is a rotatable valve stem carryingfupong its lower end a valve 13 cop'erating with i the valve seat .8.' The sleevev9' extends a cape-outwardly.- Thevalve alsoispreferably oi' such a size or shape as comparedto. the sleeve 9, to permit the Huid to'l escape between the two downwardly. 1 l I In that embodimentof the in venti on illustrated in Figs.. 1,2, 3 andtythe valve vis provided with a downwardlyl depending eX-" "tension 15, which, in the preferred form,
is substantially V'square or other regular shape, loosely fitting theinterior yof' the sleeve so that-:as the sleeve andthe valve are rotated in `relation toone' another, the f Y clear the lower end of the tube ,oif'ranyrin-V said extension 15 will serve to grindofla-nd crust-ations thereupon. This depending exa- 1 tension 15 may,.in some instances, beY dis-` pensed with, with very'satisfactory results, and in that embodiment of .the invention illustrated in'Figs. 5 and 6, thel valvev 13 is del a voidof such `eXtension. y y -k The upper end of the stem 12 is secured to' a thimble 16 which .is screw threaded in the upper end of the .tube` 7 ,and theQstem is bent downward oroutward as at 17so-as to afford convenient means forrota'ting the .,f
valve stem and thi-inble. v
y Thefoperation of. the devi'ceis apparent. The rotationV 0I" the valve will. 'serve to crush and clear .the device of any 1 incrustations forming at the valve seat 8and the sleeve y9V may readily be vturned "by the thunib and off4 the vdevice from 'such incrustations. In the form` illustrated-lin. Figs. ,1, `2,'3jand 14:5,
the extension 15 serves a similar purposein l clearing-the'deviceof1any accumulation. ofV i incrustations without in any way stirring or n agitating the carbid in the carbid chamber.'
sleeve mounted Vupon* the 'lower endof theA the iena de'seribeava." v
linger of theoperator to clear-the lower end Y and desire to' secure in combination with a rotatable valve stem Acontrol thev'riow ol fluid through Y the said sleeve-being so connected vtube that it' is within the tube provided upon its lower end Vwith a valve arranged to cooperate with the seat on the lower end ci the tube and means for permitting the escape of tluid between the two, the said sleeve being ofv a length to project below and constitute a surrounding casing tor the valve at all times.
2. In a device oi' the kind described, a de pending fluid tube provided with a valve seat upon its lower end, and with a sleeve mounted upon the lower end thereo'f and ex tending below the valve seat, said sleeve being provided with slotted openings in line with the valve seat, in combination with a rotatable valve stein positioned withintlie tube an'dcarryiiig upon its l Ver end a valve adapted to coperate witn the valve seat to the tube, with the tree Jlor relative rotatable movement but fixed against longitudinal movement, substantially as described.
8. In ad vice ot the liind described, a. depending fluid tube provided with a valve `seat upon its lower end, a sleeve mounted upon the lower end of the tube for free rela- .tive rotatable movement and fixed against longitudinal movement extending below the valve said sleeve bein provideril ,Y 1. .I
with slottedopenings in line with the vaivo seat, in combinationwith a rotatable vals/*e stem positioned within the tube carry ing upon its end a valve arranged to cooperate with the valve seat 'to control 'the escape of {iuid trom the-tube, said valve `being provided with a downwarf extending part adapted -to clear the iieev end the sleeve of anyrto-reign matter accumulat- Ving therein.
4. In a device or" the kind described, a depending fluid tube provided with a valve seat upon its lower end and a rotatable sleeve fixed against longitudinal movement mounted upon the lower end of the tube and extending below the seat, in combination with a rotatable valve stem within the tube provided upon its lower end with a valve arranged to coperate with the valve seat and spaced from the sleeve to permit the escape of fluid between the two, said sleeve being adapted at all times to project below the Valve parts, substantially as and for the purpose described. l
5. In avalve construction for acetylenev lamps and the like, the combination of a depending fluid tube provided at its lower end with a valve seat, a valve stem loosely projecting through the tube and terminating at its lower end in a valve to engage the said seat, and a sleeve loosely positioned on the tube and projecting below the valve seat as well as the valv parts, said sleeve having an opening adjacent the valve seat, and a direct inteilocl-iing engagement between the tubeV and sleeve permitting relative rotatable movement between these parts.j
6. A device of the liind 1described comprising a container, a fluid tube depending trom the top thereof and provided with a valve seat at its lower end, 'an adjustable valve st in projecting through the tube and terminating at its lower end in a valve of substantially the diameter et the tube 'and relative rotation of the sleeve and to prevent relative longitudinal movement, said sleeve being of a length to project below and constitute a surrounding housing t'or the valve, and said valve being tree 'from projecting parts extending below said sleeve.
7. Av device oi the character described comprising a container, a fluid tube depending 'trom the top oi"- the container, said tube having adjacent its lower end a 'circumierential guideway, a valve stem projecting through the tube and terminating at its lower end in a valve to engage the lower end of said tube, a sleeve loosely fitted over the lower end olV said tube and having a part to engage said guideway, whereby to permit of n W'itnesses:
