Description

L n. BUSH.
Furnaces for Melting Brass and other Metals.
Patented Feb. 18,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFroE.
IRA D. BUSH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FURNACES FOR MELTING BRASS AND OTHER METALS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 135,967, dated February 18, 1873.
being had to the accompanying drawing form-' ing apart of this specification.
The invention consists of a rotating grateframe, constructed and arranged ina-furnace, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 representsa vertical section of the furnace with the crucible, in plane, the section being taken on the line w w of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view with the cover off the furnace. Fig. 3 is a bottom view showing the movable grate-plate and grates.
A is the furnace, which is supported in the frame'B on the trunnions 0 O. D is the furnacelining. E is the crucible, in which the brass or other metal is melted. F represents partitions. H is a lever and I is a spout from the mouth or lip of the crucible on top of one of the partitions. J is the furnace-cover. chimney-pipe is attached to the collar K. L is my improved grate frame or plate, confined to the under side of the furnace-bottom 011 a central pivot, M, and pin N. There are three,
more or less, air-ports, 0, in the bottom of the furnace, one for each space or compartmentin the furnace between the partitions. Each of these apertures is provided with a removable grate, P, either attached to or cast with the rotating grate plate or frame L.
By turning the plate the grates are readily removed from the airports, which allows cinders and refuse to be discharged during'the process of melting.
Having thus described my invention, what I-claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The rotary frame L, having grates with ports 0 P, arranged on a pivot, M, in furnace,
as and for the purpose described.
lRA D. BUSH.
