17 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MATHEW SriNELLo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cigar- Lighters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to cigar lighters and one of the objects thereof is to provide an inexpensive, durable and efiicient device by means of which an electric current may be utilized to ignite a wick or lighter impregnated with a combustible fluid as, for example, gasolene, alcohol or the like. The invention contemplates the provision of means whereby current may be obtained from an ordinary house wiring circuit to traverse the circuit forming part of my invention, there being a series resistance coil and spaced contacts which are capable of being bridged by a portable lighter so that the spark generated by the adjacent contacts will cause ignition of the wick or equivalent device on the lighter and thereby provide a flame for the purpose of lighting ci ars, cigarettes, pipes and the like.

have also provided means whereby a liquid reservoir may be conveniently located adjacent to the contacts, there being means provided for receiving the lighter stick, said means preferably including a wick whereby the liquid from the reservoir may be conveyed to the lighter stick by capillary attraction.

It is also the purpose of my invention to confine the mechanism within the small compass so that the finished device will have a neat and attractive appearance.

Referring now to the drawings by nu morale of reference:

1 designates a box or casing having a re movable lid or cover 2 and within the casing is a liquidreservoir 3 having an upstanding tube 3{ supporting the head 1 of a removable lighter-stick receiving wicksupporting tube 1, which extends into the reservoir and projects above the top 2 of the casing 1. The-head 4: consists of a sleeve connected at the upper end to the combined supporting and leak preventing tube 4: and spaced from the same to fit over the projecting or upstanding tube 3. The combined supporting and leak preventing tube is adapted to be readily removed from the reservoir and replaced in the said upstanding tube. When the combined wick holder and leak preventing support is re moved from the upstanding tube the latter may be closed by the wick holder or other means. The tubular wick 5 is carried by the tube 4 and extends down to a point adjacent the bottom of the reservoir 3 so that the liquid may be conveyed by capillary attraction to a point adjacent to the upper end of the tube 41-. The lighter stick 6 is provided with a wick 7 at one end and a handle 8 at the other. The outer diameter of the stick 6 is slightly less than the inner diameter of the tube 1 so that it may be readily received therein, as shown in Fig. I, the construction being such that the stick may normally be held in the tube 4 ready to be withdrawn to permit its wick to be ignited, as by arcing between the contacts, to be referred to hereinafter.

9 designates a plug of usual construction, connected to a conductor cord 10 in which there are two conductor wires 11 and 12, the cord 10 and the wires 11 being of appropriate length. The conductor cord is adapted to enter the box or casing 1 through an insulated orifice 13 and the conductor 11 electrically connected to a contact plate 1 1, one end of which projects through the box and terminates in a downwardly projecting finger 15 corresponding to a similar finger 16 on plate 17 which is electrically connected to the terminal 18 of a resistance coil 19 wound upon the 'insulated coil 20, the coil being in series with the conductor 12, the construction thus provided causing an arc to bridge the gap between the fingers 15 and 16 when the lighter stick 6 is placed thereon to ignite the wick. The stick 6 is preferably made of brass, as are also the llades let and 17 and for convenience I prefer to construct the handle 8 of a non-conducting material as, for ex ample, hard rubber, pressed fabrlc or the like. The coil 19 may also be conveniently held in an insulated frame 21 if desired.

When it is desired to fill the reservoir 3, the Wick holding tube l may be removed and the liquid may be introduced through the tube 3 in. an obvious manner.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: V In. a device of the class described a closed volatile liquid reservoir having an upstanding tube, a tubular Wick holder and leak preventing support reniovably fitted into the upstanding tube and provided at the top With a head consisting of a sleeve con nected at the top With the tubular support and spaced therefrom to fit over the upstanding tube, said tubular support being adapted to receive wick holder and Wick in its upper portion and having its lower portion extended to receive an absorbent packing.
