V. M. HADDON.
DUMPING TRUCK.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.23. 1920.

' VIRGIL M. HADDON, OF OMHA, NEBRASKA.
PATENT oEFicE;
omarmdTRUCKl Specification of Letters Patent.
PatenteaNov. 16, 1920.
Application mea March 23, 1920. serial No. 368,088.
To all whom it 'may concern.' Y
13e it known that I, VIRGIL M; HADDoN, a citizenV of the United States,V residing 4at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of l\l'ebraska,` have invented certain new and usefulflmprovements in. Dumping-Trucks, of which'. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement 1n .dumping trucks, and has for its principal obJect to provide convenient. means for a control ofthe swinging movements of the b oX and end gate, the parts to be few and simple for these purposes so that they will bedurable and may be economically manu,- factured. Y The invention consists of the novel construction, combination and varrangement of parts as4 described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a side viewshowing the rear end of the dumping truck. Fig. 2 is a view of the same showing the position ofY parts when dumped.A Fig. 3 is a View showing the side ofthe truck oppositeto the side shown in Fig. 1.v Fig.l 4 isa view of the rear end of the truck. the scale being reduced. .l
The invention is illustrated and described in connection with a truck 5 which may be ofjordinary construction. At 6 is indieated aivboX-frame, rectangular Vinside elevation, the side-plates a for the base of said frame beingpivotally mounted as indicatedat 7, adjacent. to their rear ends upon the truck frame 8, near the rear end thereof. lNrunerals 9 indicate cross-bars which are secured to the upright parts of the box-frame for i Isupportingy the` inclined bottom, 10 ofthe box, 'said bottom having any desired degree ofv inclination found to be of advantage, the side-plates and front end-plate of the-box being respectively indicated at 11 and 12.
Pivotally mounted, as indicatedat 13, at the top of the box. at its rear open end is the end-gate 141. The downward, rearward inclination of the bottom 10 is su^h that, whileV the pivotal mountinog?4 from which the box may swing, is somewhat nearer t0 its rear than its front end, the load will be practically balanced, since, when in a nor the box to the mal position, the volume of that part ofthe box rearwardly of the pivotal 'mounting v7 will be approximately equal to the volume lof the remaining part of the box, which facilitates a control 0f the swinging movements thereof. f
For this .control Ivprovide a hand vlever 15 normally disposed lin a horizontal position at the side of a drivers seat 16, its rear end being pivotally mounted upon a bracket 1 7 which is secured to the truck frame, `a link `18 being provided which has a pivotal mounting 19 for its upper end u'nonthev front end of the box-frame, midway between the top and bottom thereof, the lower Aend of` said `link beiner vconnected with lthe hand lever between the ends thereof by means of a pivot 20, and it will .be understood that an upward swinging movement of the hand lever will cause a swinging. movement of position shown in Fig. 2 of the'drawing. V l
Numeral 21'indicates a locking-bar operating toV prevent any yupward swinging movement ofjthcgfront end of the box and hand-piece or releasing-member for the lockr15 preventing dumpingr of aloadwhile driving-bar. which is pivotally mounted forwardly of said bar uponthe hand lever 15. and itvwill be understood that a driver of the truck, lby swingingV the front end ofthe hand-piece downwardly. will c'ause its rear end to engage the lug m of the locking-bar, below7 its pivotalfmountino: 22. whichwill cause disengagement of its ledge24 with the staple 23, and the driver vmay, then swing the lever 15 upwardly, the link 18 causing the front end of the box to swing upwardly, as described, for dumping the load.
In order that the end gate 14; will have an outward swinging movement while the box is moving as Vlast mentioned, and that said gate may be moved to a closed position when the lever 15 is swung downwardly, I
. provide a pull-and-push rod 26, its Jfront end being mounted upon the pivot. of lever 15 and its rear end having a pivotal connection 27 with the. 'end gate. ltwilli" thus be seen that the movementsrof the end gate to open and closed positions require no attention of afdriver, andthat the `degree of speed for the. swinging movement ofV the box for the purpose of dumping will depend Y upon the swinging movementA of the end formly pressed against the Aend ofthe box, 'a second pull-and-push rod, indicatedat 2G .(lfig. 3.), is disposedrat the side of the boxopposite to Vthe rodV 26,.,its front end beingV pivotally mounted Vupon a pivot 20 of a rock lever 15 which isV mounted pivotallyV at its lower end uponf a bracket 17', the rear end of said Vrod 26 being pivotally mounted upon "the end"`gate as indicated 27', a link 18 Vbeing connected with the pivot 20 and with the front end of the box-frame, the parts 26l and 18 being similar 1n proportion to the' parts 26 and 18 above mentioned; and in operation,`
when, the lever 15 is swung ,forwardly to move the box-frame toa horizontal position, the rod 26" will; swing forwardly with considerable force, simultaneously with the forward movement of the rod 26 for closing the end gate, and on account of its effective weight will maintain the oil end of the L gate with (which it is connected inl contact lwithV the rear end of the box, this'being an importantv feature in operation since Ithe truck maybe used as a carrier for material Vwhich is plastic, andfby use of the construction described, a forward movement of the hand lever 15` will cause a corresponding movement of the rods 26 and 26 for pressing the end gate againstthe rear end of ytheV box, the links 18 and 18 which will then beV disposed inclinedly, operating to maintain said pressure of the end gate until .',thelever 15 has been swung upwardly.
Numerals 28 indicate stop-lugs provided for the sides of the box-frame, near the lower` part of its front end, said lugs projecting outwardly of the sides of said boxframe, their function being to prevent the link 18 from being disposed inline with the hand lever 15, and toV prevent the link 18,.l from being disposed in line with the rock-lever 15', this being of advantage since ity facilitates a forward swinging movement of the hand lever when moving the box frame to. a horizontal position after the load has been dumped.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, v p A l. In combination witha vehicle frame, a box open at its rear end andhaving an-inclined bottom and pivotallyjmounted between itsl ends upon the vehicle iframe,l a
.gate having its. upper end disposedfbetweenand; pivotally connected with the. sides of the box, a hand-lever mounted upon and normally projecting forwardly of the vehicle. frame, a link having its lowerend pivotally mounted upon .and between the ends of the'y hand-lever, its upper end lbeing mounted upon the yfront end Vof the box between the topA and bottom thereof, a pulland-push rod having its front end pivotally connected withthe hand lever its rear end being connected. withV the end gate, said hand-lever being adapted to have an upward swinging movementlto move the pull-.andpushfrod rearwardly for coincidently openin y the gate causingv a swinging movement of the vehicle ,box- Y Y Y 2. In combination with avehicle frame, a box pivotally mounted rbetween itsends upon the vehicle frame, said boxhavinga .bottom inclined from itsV front Yto itsrrear end, an end gate having its top disposed between and'I pivotally connected with the sides "of the box, a hand lever mounted on the vehicle frame` 'a link having itsfrespec- ,Y tive ends mounted on the box and said hand lever, a pull-and-push rod connecting theV hand lever with the end gate, and a lockingbar adapted'to removably engage the box 'and-pivotally connected withthe hand lever `outwardly Vof the 'mounting, on said hand levier, of the link yand said pull-and-push ro ,Y
3. In combination with a Vvehicle frame, al box having an inclined bottom Vand pivotally mounted betweenV its ends upon the vehicle frame, an-end gate having its top disposed betweeny andjpivotally connected with the sides vofthe box, a hand lever 'mounted upon the vehicleframe, a pivot-pin `carried by the hand lever, a link mounted on the pivot-pin of the hand lever and pivotally connected with the box, a pull-andpush rod mounted on the pivot-pin'of the l hand lever and pivotally connected with the Wardly of said box, a pair of links each being pivotally connected with the box and with a lever, a pair of pull-and-push rods each being connected with the gate and a lever, one of said levers being movable in avclroles arc to cause simultaneous swinging movements of said links and rods for causing simultaneous swinging movements of the box and gate.
In testimony whereof, I vhave afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses. y
