Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ermee.
ARTHUR E. GLASSMANN AND JULI'US BARTHA, OF NEW YORK, Y.
SPARK-PLUG.
Application fue@ March is.
To all whom 'it may concern: A
Be it known that We., ARTHUR E.' (inizia MANN, 'a citizen of the United States, and JULIUS BARTHA, a citizen of Hungary, and both residing at the city of New YorkL in the county of New York and State of ANew York, have invented certain Ynew and useful Improvements in Spark-Plugs, ci which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to iniprovenune in spark plugs and the object oi our inwn tion is to provide a simple, comfenirni; and efficient spark plug for use in internal coinbustion engines; 'a further object of om' 'up vention is to provide a spark plug li-.iving a plurality of spark gaps; a further object of our invention is to provide a spart; plug in which the spark gap is pmi-vided with a plurality of steps whereby the fouling oi the gap by carbon deposite will be minimized; a further object of our invention is to provide a spark plug, having a plurality of auxiliary spark gaps, and a further el ject of our invention is to provide a spark plug in which the adjustment of die spark gap is eliminated and in which a minimum current will operate eiliciently.
We accomplish these objects by the device` illustrated in the accompanying drawing@ in which-- Figure 1 is a view of the Spark plug in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same;
Fig. 3 iS a detail of the ignition deine with the rings in position and cut away at the front; and
Fig. 4 is a section ofthe saine on the line 4-4 in Fig. 3.
Similar characters refer to similar parts tlirouv hout the Several views.
Refgerring to the drawings, we provide a hollow body or core of lava, porcelain or other suitable insulating material 4which is preferably constructed iof a plurality of cylindrical integral eectione l, 2, i and 4 of progressively increased diameter, a shoulder 5 and `a terminal dome 6 in which are cut or otherwise formed a plurality of annular seats 7, 8, 9, l() and 'li and aplurality of longitudinal grooves or spark gaps i2, 13, 14: and 15 intersecting the said annular seats.
The core is incased at its levier end sec tion and adjacent its'dome t3 by an exteriorly screw threaded shell `16 for attachment of the plug to the engine and which is prol Specincaticn of Letters Pa ten t.
of operative ignition sparire bein Patented Noi. Hi., MERLE.

Over the top end section i oi the faire. irs provided an inr'snlxating, mp 2l which r upon the idieli i6 and is preferably ier-ioni thereon by bonding over a lip of ,im @hell l :and :lim by moans: oi' a mit ai s herein i iter e pin i ned,
lt'ithin the i; riit; proriiied :i terminer fili having an enlarged head 3l extinnii through the dome i5 and having :in ugr. enel Sentieri :arri-u ilireadwi io 'from a, binding post, esiti.: a suitable wield-z and mit and aieo io revelan a wai-:her o.

vided Suitable ringe 2e, ce, 3e, :n and to form :itepe for the spark between the ter minal head 2l end the shell i6.
These rings or :steps are seperated from each other and from the head 9A and shell 1.6 by Walls or partitions: 33, Bel, 35, 3G and 38, being the Sections of the dome i5 lying intermediate the cot out seats 7, S, Si. l0 and li, which welle or partitione are iii-elfen away by the iongritfulin'ii spari: gap; or grooves 12, l5, iai and it.
The device beingI thus assembled with the Shell l@ grouinied to the engine and the elect "ic current transmitted hy a suitable lead wire to the terminal 23 by means of the binding post thereon, a plural. Spark gap will lie harmed betweenthe terminal head 24. and the shell 16 through the grooves or gaps 12, i3, i4 and l5 with intermediate connecting steps;` formed by' the 28, :29, ai, e1 and a2. lead Wirefterminai across.; the i2, 13, 141 and i5 in the dome to the metal Shell 'i6 seated in the engine forming a plurality in the terminals and will be apparent a 'i` lnimuni' eiiieient current is thus required and the fouling by carbon depoeite of aufr num lier of these Spark gaps so long continuons passage remains through any combination of the gapS. l2, lf3, 'irland iii and the intermediate steps, will not destiny the operativenees of the device and the spark of the Vgaps time formed and the attendant explosion will tend te burn eff remove The circuit is from the the carbon deposits Whirh may form at the remaining aps Having t ius described our invention,`what we claim is:
1. In a, spark plug the combination of u plurality of terminals, a spark gap between the terminale, a plurality of intermediate etope between the terminals and a plurality of partitions lvetween said steps provided with gaps therein to permit the passage of operative sparks between the terminals and the Said steps.
In spark Jplug, the combination of a hollow nssuletinir core, a terminal thereino and prrriffcting beyond the ende of the core, .im end section on the frere having n plural#4 ity of seats divided by partitions, spark gaps in Suid partitions, steps for the electric ourrent in Said Seate- :ind n, shell on Said core whereby en electr-u; current passed from the Said terminal to the seid shell will. form sparks through the gaps inthe Seid partitions.
3. In :i device of the character described, the combination of :in insulating core, a, shell thereon adapted to he grounded to an engine, :in electric terminal projecting beyoud said core, e spark gap between said terminal und said shell and a plnralitv of in eaii'l spark ganpartitions between sind Steps and having a plurality of gaps whereby the current from the terminal to the shell wil he sensed to pass through the steps and form operative sparks intermedi ate said StepsA In testimony whereof We alii): our signa,- tures.
