ELECTRIC ATTACHMENT-PLUG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PATENT OFFICE.-l
Patentad Nov. 16,1920.
Application ined vJanuary 11, 191s. serial No. 211,355.
' adapted to screw into a socket, and in electrical communication with -one 'of the terminals on the body member, whereby thev plug may be screwed into the socket and establish the desired electrical connection therewith, without twisting the wires.
Heretofore, so far as I ani aware, plugs of this type have been so constructed that it is necessary in the connecting of the electric wires with the terminals thereof, to disassemble the rotatable screw-shell of the plug from the body-portion; and my primary object is to provide a construction of plug which will overcome this objection, permitting the wires to be attached to the contacts .of the plug without disassembling the parts above referred to.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a view in side elevation of an attachment plug constructed in accord-ance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical sectional elevation of the plug, the section being taken at the line 2-2 on Fig. 1
and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
'F ig. 3 is a bottom view of the plug; and
Fig. 4, a section taken at the line 1 -4 on F ig. 1 and'viewed in the direction of the arrows. y
According to the preferred, illustrated embodiment of my invention, the plug is formed'of a body member 5 of insulating material and of generally cylindrical shape, this member carrying a center-contact 6 and an electrical current-conducting member 7 for connection with the current-conducting wires 8 and 9, respectively; and a rotatable member 10, mounted on the body-member 5 and formed with a screw-threaded shell 11, which contacts with the member 7 and is adapted to be. screwed into a threaded elec'- tric socket.
The center contact 6 is formed of a binding-screw 12, which screws into an internally threaded metal sleeve 13 embedded in the end ofthe member 5, where the material of which the member 5 is composed is moldable the sleeve 13 being molded in place and to this end. containing an annularl groove 14 about its periphery. The outer end of the sleeve 13`extends preferably flush with theA inset portion 15 of the end wall of the member 5, as shown, this inset portion opening into a Apassage 1G extending longitudinally through the member 5 for the wire 8, which is looped around the shank of the lscrew 12 and held in rigid electrical connection with this screw upon screwing-the latter to place in the sleeve 13,the construction just described forming'iin v'effect a binding-post for the wire 8.
The member 7 -isipreferably of generally circular form,`it beiiigformed of a band ofA metal, which encircles the member 5 toward one end thereof. Themember 7 has an inwardly offset section 17, which extends into a recess 18'in the side ofthe body member 5,
at which portion itjis equipped with a binding-post'l), thel shank 20 of which has threaded engagement with a nut 21 lying at the rear side of the portion 17 in the recess 18, this binding-post being provided for-connection with the wire 9, which leads through one' end of the plug and through Aa passage 22therein, into engagement with the binding-post. By preference the member 7. is equipped with an outwardly-turned flange 23, w ich preferably is co-extensive with the member 7, except at the defiected portion 17 thereof, this iange being provided to present a relatively largey area of bearing surface for the adjacent end of the screw-shell 11. This screw-shell,- which is preferably provided with a surface of insulating material at which the member 10 may be grasped for rotating it to position the plug in the socket and which in the construction shown is in the form of a ring screwed tothe shell l1, is held between the flangel 23 and a iiange 25 provided' on the periphery of the body-member 5 at the endv thereof opposite that equipped with the center-contact 6.
In the manufacture of the particular con-l member i in proper position, the threaded member ll thereby becoming confined in place, to be rotatable on the body member 5.
It will be noted that both of the bindingposts 12 and 19 are accessible for attachment thereto of the current-conducting wires, for wiring the plug, without requiring the separation of the member 10 from the member 5, and thus, the plug may be quickly Wired when desired.
lVhile I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, l do not wish to be understood as intending to limitgit thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit ot my invention, it being my intention to claim my invention as fully and completely as the prior state of the art will permit.
