Description

C. GILBERT.
VManuracturl of Starch.
Patented Feb. 18,1873.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoEa GOLGATE GILBERT, OF UFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF STAVRCH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,904, dated Febinavy 18, 1873.
To all whom lt may concern:
Be it known that I, GOLGATE GILBERT, of Bufalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Starch-Mill Machinery, of which the following is a specification:
N atar@ tml Object of the Invention.
a wrench or key, the adjustment can be made,
In the drawing, Figure l is a vertical crosssection of the stone, bushing, and follower, showing the adjusting1 screw-rods. Fig. 2 is a plan View."
A represents the stone; B, the bushing of the same; and U, the follower. a a are the adjusting-rods formed with square heads and a screw-thread on the upper part for a short distance, the ends terminating in such a shape as to permit the setting on of a key or wrench. These adjusting-rods first pass through the rim b of the follower or gland C, thence outside the follower into the bushing B, which is made at the top and extending a short distance down (of metal) with a screw-thread in it to engage the screw part of the rod a. The rest of the rod is made smooth, and comes out i underneath the bed-stone, as before stated.
The object of the follower is to press down hard the packing placed in the space between Y the spindle and bushing.
It is common to adjust the follower and packing by various devices, but all have to stop the working of the mill to do so; but by elongating the screw-rods and passing them entirely through the stone an important advantage is gained by more readily adjustinggand doing so at any moment, while the mill is in operatiom In other devices, after the mill is stopped, the runner has to be taken oil' to get at the tops of the ordinary adjusting-screws.
Mine, by alittle attention, anticipates as well as prevents the liability to leak, by keeping the rods constantly tightened.
