IMPROVEMENT iN 'SCAFFLD Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,902, 'datedlf`ebruary 18, 1873.

y To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABNER GATES, of Burnside, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Builders Scaffolds, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to make a substantial buil ders scaffold that can be quickly put up and taken down and adjusted to any height. -Itis made as herein set forth, referring to the drawing accompanying, in which- Figure lis a vertical section of one supporting part of the apparatus as in use, with related parts. Fig. 2, Sheet 2, is aview of the car B as from the Wall.

Against the wall A of a building is shown a part, B, which rests against it by rollers O D at the top and bottom. This bears the platform of boards F F at the top. These boards reach from the part shown to one or more like parts at a distance along the wall, giving support to the other ends of the boards. This part B is arranged so as to be si'ipported by the wheels O D on the`wall and a part, E, from the other side and below, that bears the weight. At

the point C there are two wheels, some distance apart horizontally, to give lateral support. The wheels allow the part B to be freely moved up and down the wall without being attached to it. The part G bears awindlass, H, which has a crankarm, h, for turning. This has a rope, I, reaching from it up over a pulley,` K,'and down to the end of part E, where a knot or hook, L, is inserted therein, by which the turning of the crank h will force up the part E and cause the part B and scaffold to be elevated TheV part E is held in place by bearings at K K k kf and by the two sides of part G. The part G has two side parts, which have sharp-pointed feet at M to rest securely on-the ground, to keep them from slipping. rIhere can also be provision for a broad bearing, besides the sharp point, to bear the weight. The crank-windlass H has apawl-and-ratchet arrangement, N, to prevent its turning backward to let the scaffold down when not required. When it is wished to lower it the pawl is raised While the crank is turned backward by hand. The part E is made in separate sections, E e, by which when one length is run up another can be added at the bottom and the hook L transferred thereto.

The lower ends of these sections are made to The whole is -raised and lowered, as the work progresses and occasion requires, with ont interfering with the workmen or the scaffold otherwise.

The car B is made with a vertical part, B', having awheel, D, at the lower end, and with a cross-part, B, at the top having wheels (l C at its two ends some distance each side ot' the center, so as to rest firmly against the side of the wall and be well braced sidewise by these two wheels when held up by shaft E.

I claim- .1. A builders scaffold formed with the severa-l parts of the platform, as shown, having parts F and F on different levels, the car with wheels resting against the side of the house, and the elevating-beam E, all combined as set forth.

2. A builders elevating scaffold-car formed of an upright central part and a top crosspart extending to a considerable distance on each side, and having wheels on each end of the cross-part resting against the wall, substantiallyas set forth.
