Be it known that I, HARVEY C. MAsLANn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Surgical Saw for Cranial and other Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
In a prior patent granted to me October 31st, 1905, No. 803,498, I have shown and described a novel construction of a surgical or cranial saw, which 1 have found in practice to give satisfactory and efficient results.
It is, however, frequently desirable in devices of this character to enable certain parts to be readily disconnected in order to clean the same and to make provision for rendering certain of the movable elements readily accessible, andto the above ends my present invention, while relating generally to the subject-matter of my prior patent aforesaid, consists more particularly in a novel construction of a detachable housing carrying the saw arbor and its adjuncts and adapted to be removably connected-with the forward end of the saw handle, provision being made for enabling said housing to be quickly and readily disconnected from the saw handle, for the purposes of inspection cleaning, replacing parts and the like.
To the above ends, my invention consists of a novel construction ofv a surgical, cranial or other saw, and more particularly of a novel detachable saw housing and its adjuncts, whereby the various operative parts are rendered morev accessible than heretoent preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to beunderstood that the various instrumentalit'ies of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instru mentalities as herein shown and described. Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a cranial, surgical or other saw, embodying my invention.

Referring to the drawings.
1 designates my novel construction of surgical, cranial or other saw, the same comprising the handle 2,in the forward portion of which I locate the detachable housing 3, which has the outer flange 4i and the body portion 5, which has the preferably cylindrical or curved portion 6, which fits the preferably curved transverse seat 7 in the forward portion of the handle 2. I preferably make a portion of the housing body 5 hollow as indicated at 8, and near one end thereof, 1 provide the stepped bearing 9, in which is received the shouldered portion 10 of the saw spindle or arbor 11 to the outer end of which is secured the circular, cranial, surgical or other saw 12, as will be understood from Figs. 3 and 1.
The saw spindle or arbor 11 has the bevel ear 13, pinned or otherwise secured thereto, .nd its outer end or end opposite to the nouldered portion 10 terminates in the ournal 14, which has its bearing in the nut 15, which is in threaded engagement with the threaded seat in the flanged end of the body 5, as will be understood from Figs. 3, e, and 6, wherein it will be seen that the saw arbor revolves in alining bearings, one of which as the nut 15, is readily removable.
The bevel gear 13 meshes with the bevel driving gear 16 mounted on the terminus or head 17 of any suitably mounted driving shaft 18, which is rotated by power derived from any suitable source. lVhen the parts are assembled the outer housing flange 1 seats in the counterbored portion 19, in the forward side of the handle 2 and is held in position by the screws or other fastening devices 20.
It will be'seen from the foregoing, that by the employment of my novel housing that when it is desired to clean the operative mechanism of the saw or to obtain access to the driving mechanism or the like, it is only necessary to remove the two screws 20, whereupon the entire saw housing can be removed, the parts then appearing as seen in Fig. 5. Upon the removal of the nut l5,
the saw 12, and the gear 13, the arbor 11 can be removed, the housing 3 then appearing as seen in Fig. 6. V
In case it is desired to inspect or clean the saw arbor 11, it is only necessary after removing the housing as above explained, to unscrew the nut 15, whereupon the journal bearings of the saw spindle or arbor 11 are readily accessible for cleaning, inspection or other purposes.
By the provision of the counterbore 19 and the seating of the flange & therein, it will be apparent that the finished device when assembled has a neat and pleasing ap pearance.
By the provision of the transverse opening 21 in the forward end of the handle, the forefinger of the operators hand can be readily inserted therein and the saw'readily manipulated and guided to the work and the instrument firmly grasped in the hand of the operator during the sawing operation.
The handle 2 is constructed substantially as seen in my prior patent aforesaid, and possesses all the advantages recited therein, since the thumb and fingers of the operator are enabled to firmly grasp said handle and exert full and powerful pressure upon the desired point, so as to enable the saw to be presented close to its work directly at the forward end of the handle and to be powerfully forced against the bone or other material to be sawed, while the results of the work will be clearly visible to the operator at all times.
It will be apparent that by my novel construction, the principal rotatable elements of my device are readily accessible at all times, and in the case of injury to any of the parts repairs can bereadily made or such parts replaced, since they are readily accessible for cleaning and other purposes at all times. My novel device is serviceable for cranial, surgical and other purposes, as is evident.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of surgical saw for cranial and other purposes which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in thestatement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the in vention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character stated, a handle, a transverse seat in the forward end thereof, an outer counterbore in the side of said handle, a saw housing provided with a body portion adapted to seat in said transverse seat, and a flange adaptedto seat-in said counterbore, and means 'engageable with the portion in said seat for securing said housing to said handle.
2. In a device of the character stated, a handle, a transverse seat in the forward end thereof, an outer counterbore in the side of said handle, a saw housing provided with a body portion adapted toseat in said-transverse seat, and a flange adapted to seat in said counterbore, and means engageable with the portion in said seat for securing said housing to said handle, in combination with a saw arbor having bearings in said housing.
3. In a device of the character stated, a handle, a transverse seat in the forward end thereof, an outer counterbore in the side of said'handle. a saw housing provided with 'a body portion adapted to seat in said transverse seat, and a flange adapted to seat in said counterbore, and means engaged with said flange for securing said housing to said handle, in combination with a saw arbor having bearings in said housing, a suitable gear on said arbor, and means for driving said gear and arbor.
4. In a device of the character stated, a detachable circular saw housing having a curved body portion and an overhanging flange, a saw arbor mounted in saidbody portion and provided with a suitable gear, a stepped bearing in one end of said hous ing for said arbor. and a detachable nut having a bearing extending therethrough for the opposite end of said arbor, a handle having a transverse extending seat and a counterbore therein adapted to receive said flange, and fastening devices common to said flange and handle.
5. In a device of the character stated, a housing having a hollow portion extending therethrough, an outer flange for said housing having a threaded seat therein, a threaded nut adapted to engage said seat and provided with an arbor bearing, a bearing in the opposite end of said housing, and a saw arbor mounted in said housing and rotatable upon said bearings.
6. In a device of the character stated, a housing having a hollow portion extending therethrough, an outer flange for said hous ing having a threaded seat therein, a
threaded nut adapted to engage said seat and provided with an arbor bearing, a stepped bearing in the opposite end of said housing, a saw arbor mounted in said housing and rotating upon said bearings, a suitable gear on said saw arbor, and a suitable driving gear in mesh therewith.
7. In a device of the character stated, a housing having a hollow portion extending therethrough, an outer flange for said housing having a threaded seat therein, a threaded nut adapted to engage said seat and provided with an arbor bearing, a stepped bearing in the opposite end of said housing, a saw arbor mounted in said housing and rotating upon said bearings, a suitable gear on said saw arbor, and a suitable driving gear in mesh therewith, in combination with a handle, having therein a seat for said housing, and a counterbore for the reception of the flange of said housing, and fastening devices common to said handle and housing.
