SHOCK-TYING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. Hansen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Sac and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shock-Tying Devices, of
' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. p
This invention relates to shock tying devices and it has for its object to provide a proved means for increasing the rear end bearing surface of the winding drum to resist lateral strain. A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved pawl and ratchet construction by means of which the device may be easily and quickly controlled.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.

Referring to the drawing it will be seen that the device comprises a shaft 5 that is pointed at 6 to adapt it to be thrust into the body of a shock. The outer end of the shaft 5 provides a mounting for a rotative drum '7. A crank 8 carrying an operating handle 9 is secured to a flange 10 of the drum 7 at 11. A collar 12 carrying ratchet teeth 13 is pinned to the outer end of the shaft, the teeth of this ratchet being engageable by a pawl 15 that is pivoted at 16 to the crank 8. A link 17 connects the pawl 15 with an operating lever 18 that is pivoted at 19 to the crank S. The lever 18 carries an outwardly projecting finger engaging piece 20 by which the lever may be operated, and th1s finger engaging piece is projected inwardlybeyond the lever 18 to engage in a detent recess 21 of the crank 8. A spring 22 tends to move the pawl 15 into engagement with the ratchet teeth but the frictional engagement of the inner end of the piece 20 in the detent recess 21 is suflicient to hold the pawl out of engagement against the action of the spring 22, when desired. An enlarged bearing flange 24 is pinned or otherwise secured at 25 to the shaft 5. A curved guard strip 26 lies transversely with respect to the shaft 5, and the shaft 5 passes therethrough. Bearing elements 27 are secured to the flange 24 and the outer faces of these bearing elements lie flush with the outer face of the guard strip 26. with the result that a complete flat bearing for the entire inner face of the enlarged flange 28 at the inner end of the winding drum. is provided. Thus a part of the lateral strain brought upon the winding drum is transmitted directly to the guard strip which engages over a considerable surface of the shock. This guard strip performs the ad ditional function of holding the shaft 5 against turning in the shock. A strap 29 braces and strengthens the guard strip.
The guard strip carries a hook 30 adapted to engage a loop 31 formed upon the end of the cord 32 by which the shock is to be tied A rope or cable 33 has one of its ends permanently secured to a ring 34 that is carried by the drum 7. In operation the shaft 5 is thrust into the shock to be tied with the guards 26 firmly engaged with the face of the shock to hold the device as a whole,
against turning. The operator then forms I a loop 31 in the cord by which the shock is to be tied, engages this loop with the hook 30 and carries the rope or cable 33 and the cord around the shock together, being careful to keep the cord beneath the rope. After the shock has been encircled the end of the cord is left to hang freely, for the time being, while the free end of the rope is engaged beneath that portion of the rope adjacent the ring 84.
