To all whom elf may concern:
Be it known that I, LAUR-rr WV. ANDER- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Clusters for Electric-Light Fixtypes of electric light fixtures.
The object of the inventionis to provide for the adjustment of the incandescent lamp to any desired angle.
Portable electric lamps, as usually constructed, embody a cluster .of sockets and lamps; and permanent or fixed fixtures of all types have also been provided with clusters. In these clusters, however, the sockets have one fixed or definite position, and although it has been frequently desired to adjust the position of the lamps in a cluster no provision for such adjustment has ever been made.
It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide for the quick and easy adjustment of the sockets and lamps of a cluster; and a still further object is to provide for the independent adjustment of such lamps that is, the adjustment of each lamp or socket separate and independent of any other lamp and socket constituting a part of the cluster or fixture.
/Vith these, and certain other objects in view, the invention consists in the several novel features of construction and their combination or arrangement all of which will be fully described hereinafter and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification I have shown one form of device embodying my invention but it will be obvious, as the description proceeds, that the invention is capable of embodiment in various types of construction.
Referring to the drawings in detail Figure 1 is a side elevation of the standard of a portable lamp having a two-lamp cluster connected thereto, the full and dotted lines showing the capabilities of the adjustable features of the devloe. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the casing and nipple connected thereto. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view ofthe washer, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the nipple and Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the socket bushing, nipple, washer, and portion of the casing.
In the practical embodiment of my inven- 'tion, I employ a fixed member A which is in the form of a shell or casing of any desired shape and in the present instance is arranged at the upper end of a standard or supp r B t gh which h cond c r wires are passed into the shell or casing.
This shell or casing is provided with a cap '6, preferably removable, this cap being secured in place by means of a nut screwed -upon the upper end of the hickey or other form of connector used in the assemblage of the fixture, the cap being centrally perforated and through which the threaded end of the hickey passes.
The shell or casing A is provided with any desired number of nipples D to which the bushings E of the lamp sockets F are secured, these lamp sockets being of any desired type of construction, and the conductor wires pass as usual through the nipple and bushings to the socket proper of the lamp. 7
In order to render the sockets adjustable to various angles it is of course necessary to have the nipples adjustable with reference to the fixed member, shell, or casing, and this is accomplished by producing in the shell or casing a slot for each nipple, and it will be noted that each nipple is formed at its inner end with a head or flange G. This head or flange rests within the shell or casing and contacts with the inner side thereof adjacent the edges of the slot. The upper and lower edges of the head or flange G are cut off as shown.
A washer H is fitted over the threaded and outwardly projecting portion of the nipple, this washer being upon the exterior of the shell or casing and is provided with upper and lower ears, lugs, or extensions I, which are bent over and around the flattened or have been folded over and around the said head or flange. This also provides a'com pleted" connection of the nipple to the shell or casing and prevents its dislocation when the socket is disconnected. The bushing of the socket is screwed upon the threaded or projecting portion of the nipple and when this bushing is screwed up to its limit it will contact with the washer H and draw'the Washer and the flange of the nipple into binding and locked engagementwith the opposite faces of the shell or casing thereby securely locking the socket and nipple at the desired point of adjustment and it is'obvious that if it should be desired to shift or adjust the position of the socket it is only necessary to slightly loosen the bushing, move the nipple up or down in the slot, and then retighten; and the adjustment is accomplished. Any desired number of sockets can be employed in the cluster, each one be ing connected, adjusted and operated as above described and it will be understood that each and every socket is adjustable with reference to the shell or casing and independently of the other socket or sockets.
y means of this adjustable feature the lamp can be instantly adjusted to accommodate varying features of shade and lamp construction and also the position of the source of light.
Having thus I claim is z- 1. In an electric lamp, a cluster comprising a shell having a plurality of slots, nipples adjustable insaid slots and adapted to have sockets connected thereto, and locking means carried by said nipples cooperative with the sockets and shell to look its parts together.
2. In an electric lamp, a shell having an elongated opening, a nipple movable in said opening and provided with means for engaging one side of the shell, and means carried by said nipple and adapted to engage the opposite sides of the shell, said parts being locked together by a socket upon the described my invention what nipple. 3. In an electric lamp, a shell having an elongated opening, a nipple movable in said opening and having a head at its inner end,
.the outer end being adapted to receive a socket, and a washer plate carried by said nipple and also movable in saidelongated opening, and holding the nipple against rotation, all of said parts being locked against movement upon the attachment of a socket to saidnipple. v
