Be it known that we, GEORGEV. MONEIL and CLOYD F. ANDERSON, citizens of the `United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Cartridges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improveniente in hydraulic cartridges and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the breaking down of coal or other material, and itis an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying a plurality of pistons operating in individual cylinders and wherein each of said cylinders has in communication therewith a duct independent of the remainder of the cylinders and leading from a source of fluid pressure.
An additional object of the inventionis to provide a device of this general'character including pistons outwardly movable under fluid pressure and wherein novel and improved means are included for automati cally regulating the outward movement of the pistons, together with means whereby the pistons move inwardly by suction or through the Vcreation of a vacuum.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cartridge of this general charac ter wherein the Operating means therefor includes a pressure chamber and a fluid. reservoir in` communication therewith, together with means arranged within the reservoir and operated cxteriorly thereof for creating the requisite pressure within thek pressure chamber.
Furthermore, it is an object ofthe invention to provide a device ofV this general character wherein the requisite pressure is created through the instrumentality of a single operating member, together withV means cooperating with the operating member for releasing the pressure. l y

to provide a novel and improved cartridge of this character wherein the pistons are angularly arranged with respect to the longitudinal axis of the body ofthe cartridge, whereby the device is particularly adapted for use in connection with an upwardly inclined bore and which character. of bore can be drilled with greater convenience and facility than a horizontal bore.
It is 'also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a plurality of pistons wherein each of the pistons is placed under pressureA independently Of the remainder, so that a leak in one or more of the cylinders for the pistons does not affect theY Others and wherein all of the pistons move uniformly and simultaneously regard less of varying Outward conditions and particularly as offered by the variance. in the load or resistance offered separately t the pistons.
The invention consists in the details of construction Vand in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved hydraulic cartridge whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes the body of the cartridge which is substantially cylindrical in form but having a flat face 1 extending the entire length thereof. The body B isof such dimensions as to be readily inserted in a hole or bore a drilled in coal or other material to be broken down or displaced and which hole or bore is positioned a desired distance above the miningor kerf b (F ig. 1). i
The flat face V1 has produced therein a plurality of pockets or cylinders 2 spaced longitudinally ofthe body. The axial centers of the pockets or cylinders 2 are arranged in parallelism and on a slight angle relative to the longitudinal axis ofthe body B and inclined in a direction toward the inner end of said body. i Working in each ofthe pockets or cylinders 2 is a piston 3. The inner end portion of the piston has secured thereto a cup gasket 41 or the like for contact with the inner wall of the pocket or cylinder 2 for a purpose which is believed to be apparent.
The inner end portionof the body B has secured thereto an end portion of a hollow member or pipe 5, the opposite'end of which being 'secured to and extending through the axial center of a plate 6.
The body B is provided with a duct 7 for each ofthe pockets or cylinders 2 and which duct communicates with its pocket or cylinder at the inner endV thereof. 1t is to be particularly noted that each of the ducts V7 is Vfree of the remainder and it is also to be noted that this is also true of the, pockets or cylinders 2. Each of the ducts 7 is continued, as at 7a, through the tubular member or pipe 5 and which continued portions 7a constitute piping. Y The pistons 3 are adapted to 4be forced outwardly by fluid pressure, liquid or hydraulic, and by having the pockets or cylinders 2 for said pistons 3 angularly arranged,
as hereinbefore recited, our improved can tridge is particularly adapted for use within a hole or bore a in the coal seam or other material which is' disposed on an upward incline. .The material advantage of this provision resides in the fact that it ismuch easier to drill an upwardly inclined hole or bore a than if the same were drilled hori zontally. By having the pistons moving in a path angular to the longitudinal axis Vof the body B, the line of pressure isV in a correct direction or line of least resistance to effectively break the coal or other material and which is due to the fact that the line of pressure is not toward the solid coal or ma* terial behind the mining or kerf In view of the particular mounting of the pistons 3, itis of importance to keep each of said pistons from turning in order to mainand Y having interposed therebetween, .v when assembled, a partition plate or septum 10, whereby the section X serves as a reservoirand the section Y constitutes apressure chamber. The outer end of the section X is closed by a head 11 having its peripheral portion extended to aord an outstanding flange 12 while the outer end of the section Y is closed by a head 14. The head 14 4is maintained in applied position by a plate 15 overlying the outer face of the head and extending Y beyond the periphery of said head.V The flange 12 and the plate 15 are connected by the tie rods 16,- whereby the sections X and Y and the interposed partition plate or septum 10 are maintained in assembled relation. The plate 6, hereinbefore referred to, is secured to the plate 15 through the instrumentality of the bolts 17.
The head 14 extends partially within the outer end portion of the section Y and has disposed therethrough a series of openings 18 of a number equal to the number of pockets or cylinders 2 in the body B. Fitting within eachv of the-openings 18 is the forward end portion of a stationary tubular piston 19 and engaged within the forward end'portion of the bore 2OV of said'piston is a member or nut 21 which serves to maintain a piping 7 a in communication vwith the bore 2 `y VTheinner end'portion of the bore 2O of the piston 19 is enlarged as at 2OEL and engaged within saidenlarged portion 20'al is a tubular plug nut 22 which clamps to the inner end of the` piston 19 acupgasket 23.

Cup gasket 28 ofeach of the pistons 19 enages the wall of the pocket or cylinder 24 into which the piston 19 extends. The cylinder P is moved forwardly by pressure in a manner to be hereinafter more particularly referred to and upon release of the pressure thereon, the cylinder P is moved rearwardly 'by the expansible members 25' herein disclosed as coil springs. A member 25 is arranged within each of the pockets or cylindersV 24 and is interposed between the base of said pocket or cylinder and the internalV shoulder 26 within the bore 2O of the coacting piston 19 and as afforded by the enlarged portion 20% Arranged witnin the section X is a pair of pump cylinders 27. Each of the cylinders l27 has its forward end portion -27a reduced and snugly disposed through an opening 2B in the partition plate or septum 10, and coacting with the outer extremityl of said reduced portion 27a and engaging the forward face of the partition plate or septum 10 is a clamping nut 29 which, in connection with the shoulder 30 as afforded by the reduced portion 27 a contacting with the inner face of the partition plate or septum 10, maintains the pump cylinder 27 in applied position.
The cylinders 27 discharge within the section or pressure chamber Y rearwardly of the cylinder P, and arranged within the discharge end portion of each of the cylinders 27 isa check valve 31 of a conventional type and whereby return flow into a cylinder 27 from the section or chamber Y is prevented. Extending within each of the cylinders 27 from the rear is a plunger 32 having engaged with its'forward end a cup gasket 33 for contact with the wall of the ocre of theV cylinder for obvious reasons. The outer -extremity of the plunger 32 extends within a guide 34 secured to and extending outwardly from the head 11. The inneriportion of the guide-34 is defined by an outstanding flange 35 contacting with the inner face of the head 11, and coacting'with the outer face of the head 1.1 is a clamping nut 36 whereby the guide 34 is maintained in applied position. ilso coacting with the plunv ger 32 exteriorly of its coacting cylinder 27 is guide block maintained in applied position through the medium of a screw 38 threaded through a wall of the section X and engaged within the block 37.

`The lever 40 is adapted to be swung manuwithV the bore thereof a depending pipe 43 Y terminating in close proximity to the bottom or low portion of the reservoir or section X and interposed therein is a check valve 45 opening upon the suction stroke of the coacting plunger 32 but closing during the forcing strolreof said plunger.
In practice, the reservoir or section X is filled with a suitable liquid, preferably oil, and the pockets or pistons 2 4 in the pressure cylinder P, when in retracted position, together with the ducts 7, the piping 7 a, and
the bores 20 of the pistons 19, are also filled' with a similar fluid. When the cylinder l) is in its retracted position, it is also to be understood that the cartridge pistons 3 are also As the swings or oscillates the lever 40, the resultant reciprocation of the plungers 32 forces the liquid from the reservoir or section X into the section or pressure chamber Y inwardly of the cylinder P and forces said piston outwardly. This p outward movement of the cylinder l) transmits pressure to the liquid within the pockets or cylinders 24, the bores 20, piping` 7 a and ducts 7 causing the pistons 3 to move outwardly simultaneously and vuniformly regardless kof varying exterior conditions. In other words, if a ton weight were 'placed on anyone of the pistons 3, all of the pistons will travel equally regardless of thel fact lthat one ofthe pistons may have all the load to carry. n n Y In order Vto facilitate the functioning of the cylinder P, a cup gasket 46 is secured to `the rear face thereof for contact with the inner wall of the section or chamber Y.
The ,partition plate or septumV 10 is also provided with an opening 47 in which .is ongaged an end rportion of a sleeve 48 in communication with the section' or pressure chamber Y.' The sleeve has interposed therein' a check valve 49 which is normally closed. Extending within the rear or inner endportion of the sleeve 4S is a stem 50` which, when moved inwardly, moves the valve 49 into open position. lV hen the valve 49 is in openV position, the pressur Vwithin the section. or chamber Y is released and the cylinder P returns to its normal or re- -tracted position under. vthe. influence ofthe expanslble members 4or springs 25 hereinheoperator recurrentlyv ico ' the chamber'Y and when said point of comfore referred to. The returning movement of the cylinder P creates a suction which draws theliquid Vfrom within the pockets or cylinders 2 creating a vacuum mwardly of -the pistons 3, whereby said pistons are caused to be retracted or inoved`inwardly.

Vt is, therefore, to be understood that the extent of projection of the pistons 3 will depend upon the location ofthe point of communication between the duct or pipe 52with the reservoir Y relative to the partition plate or septum 10. .l
From Y the foregoing description, 1 it is thought to be obvious that a hydraulic cartridge constructed in accordance withour invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that 'our invention issusceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit-thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting Vourselves to .the precise `arrangement and formation -of the several parts herein shown in carrying outour invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

A hydraulic cartridge comprising an .elongatedV body comprising; a plurality Vet longitudinally spaced cylinders, said cylin- `ders having their axial centers angularly disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis of the body, said cylinders having their axial centers substantially in parallelism, pistons arranged within lthe-cylinders, fluid 'means for forcing said' vpistons outwardly, and means, for' holding the cylinders Iagainst rotation.

A hydraulic cartridge comprising,'in combination, an elongated body provided with a plurality of cylinders, pistons working therein, a cylinder divided into a reservoir and pressure chamber, a pressure cylinder within the pressure chamber, and'provided with pressure pockets, each of the cylinders of the body being separately in communication with an individual pressure pocket, means for pumping a fluid within the reservoir into the pressure chamber to force the pressure cylinder outwardly, means for relieving the pressure in the pressure chamber, and automatic means for returning the pressure cylinder upon release of the pressure upon said pressure cylinder.

A hydraulic cartridge comprising, in combination, a body provided with a cylinder, a piston movable within said cylinder, a pressure chamber, a reservoir to contain fluid, means for forcing the liuid from the reservoir into the pressure chamber, and a pressure cylinder within the pressure chamber operating by the iuid delivered within the pressure chamber, said pressure cylinder being in communication with the cylinder of the body, the means for forcing the rluid from the reservoir into the pressure chamber also including` means for releasing the rpressure in the pressure chamber.

A hydraulic cartridge comprising, in combination, a body provided with a cylinder, a piston movable within said cylinder, a pressure chamber, a reservoir to contain tluid, a pressure cylinder within the pressure chamber, said pressure cylinder being in communication with the cylinder of the body, a pump for forcing the fluid within the pressure chamber to move the pressure cylinder in one direction, means for operating the pump, a normally closed port in communication with the reservoir and the pressure chamber, and means operated by the means combination, a body provided with a cylini der, a piston movable within said cylinder, a pressure chamber, aresei'voir to contain fluid, a pressure cylinder-within the pressure chamber, said pressure cylinder being inV communication with the `cylinder of the body, apump for forcingthe fluid within the Apressurechamber to move the pressure cylinder in one directiom said pump being arranged within the reservoir, means for operating the pump, a normallyA closed port in communication with the reservoir and the pressure chamber, and means operated by the means for operating the pump for opening said normally closed port.
16. A hydraulic cartridge comprising, in combination, a body provided with a cylinder, a piston movable within said cylinder, a pressure chamber, a reservoir to contain fluid, a pressure cylinder within the pressure chamber, said pressure cylinder being in combination with the cylinder of the body, a pump for forcing the uid within the pressure chamber to move the pressure cylinder in one direction, said pump being arranged within the reservoir and including for imparting endwise movement to theV plunger, and means exterior-ly of the reservoir for recurrently rotating the shaft.
17. A hydraulic cartridge comprising, in combination, a body provided with a cyline der, a piston movable within said cylinder, a pressure chamber, a reservoir to contain fluid, a pressure cylinder within the pressure chamber, said pressure cylinder being in communication with the cylinder of the body, a pump for forcing the 'fluid within the pressure chamber to move the pressure cylinder in one direction, said pump being arranged within the reservoir and including a reciprocating plunger, a shaft intersecting the reservoir and engaged with the plunger for imparting endwise movement to the plunger, means eXteriorly of the reservoir ico . piston mounted within the cylinder, and
means for forcing said piston outwardly.
